According to my mechanic, who has been a Porsche mechanic for more than forty years, this is a myth. As always, a great video from you.
@lizard944

@@eddieselman8942 I just got back from the Porsche Swap Meet in Carlisle, PA. Several local dealerships always bring new vehicles to showcase, and all of them had the crests oriented that way so I assume that's how they came from the factory. Ironically, I was just talking about this to my daughter earlier today at the show. Of course, it's not a performance issue or going to give you any more horsepower, but I just see it as something that separates an "owner" from a true enthusiast. It would actually influence my buying decision a little if I were deciding between two identical cars on how OCD and meticulous the seller is, say like the host of this channel LOL!

@@lizard944 I entered my 928 GTS in the Concourse d’ Elegance at the 2022 Porsche Owners Club N.S.W. and was chipped by one of the judges for this terrible mistake. Mentioned it to my mechanic and he made that comment. He is a member of the club and has judged mainly the transaxle cars in the past but no longer bothers because of what he regards as misinformation. Just saying and not looking for a response. I agree with you about why we choose to drive Porsches, attention to detail, which is exactly what my mechanic and his son are fanatical about and insist on. They are the go to shop for transaxle cars in Sydney, Australia and look after my 928 and 944 Turbo.

@@eddieselman8942 It could very well be a myth, absent a technical service bulletin advising of such. 😂 Mythology does seem to be blurring lines of reality at this point though, as a number of automotive journalists have reported on such wheel alignment specs, quoting a “Porsche employee” told them so. That’s not to say it’s 100% verifiable. I’ve also noticed that all marketing photos released on Porsche’s website have the caps precisely oriented that way, but what the true origination is, I’ve no clue. Cheers and thanks for sharing!

@@casper7794 @NC944er Thanks guys I’ve been doing my best to keep it that way, but even I can’t keep up with the level of detail NC goes to, especially tackling those really big projects like the head gasket and now the torque tube. Seeing how much pop all the zinc components add really goes to show that it’s all the little details that seriously add up. I just spent a lot of coin having my A/C repaired, but next up on the docket for is for sure going to be that Lindsey MAF kit… for my ‘86 though that means upgrading my DME as well. Were the old center caps metal? And what did you do with them...i may need a set for my CS rims. Cant powder coat the plastic ones obviously and the colored crest is easy to remove by drilling out the rivets.
@NC944er
@NC944er Год назад
My old center caps were the same part number, just in more of a “pre-owned” condition. The main cap material is metal, but it seems like the crest may be plastic or a different type of metal. It is riveted to the center cap as you described. Strangely enough, the crests were in great shape, but most of the silver paint on the outer cap sections had chipped off. I had repainted those areas with Duplicolor wheel silver, which was a close match with slightly more metal flake. I still have the caps and would part with them fairly cheaply if you’re interested. Email me and I’ll send you some pics. My address is listed in the “About” tab on the channel.

I did a similar wheel/tire install on my 87 N/A last week. Sourced some 968 wheels of similar size and offset, and mounted a set of DWS06 tires in 205/225 sizes. I've had great luck with these tires on other P cars I own (Caymans and Boxsters), and have always been impressed by the performance despite being an A/S tire. Well, I road tested them this weekend on some of my favorite roads, and i have to tell you, I'm not impressed. I tried running 29/36 PSI, then 36/36 PSI, and many combos in between, and none seemed to remove the "squishy" feeling of the tires. A quick google search shows this is a common complaint on these tires. many feel they just need to break in. Right now I have about 100 miles on them, and will continue to evaluate for at least 500 miles hoping the performance more closely resembles what i am used on my other P cars. So, I am curious on your thought on how they handle and what PSI you decided to run? Love your videos... keep them coming!
@NC944er
@NC944er Год назад
Hey, thanks for sharing! That certainly is a similar setup. I haven’t yet pushed the tires too far as they only have about 200 miles on them. Sources I saw indicated at least 300 miles for a proper break-in. They are noticeably softer than my old tires, but those were super hard from age, so not the best of comparisons. Right now, they are at about 33 PSI. They feel pretty sticky and I no longer have any wheel hop in the rear when they break free. I’m also getting used to the semi-solid transmission mount, which has added some additional sounds and feedback into the cabin. With the new clutch and rebuilt torque tube, engagement is a lot smoother and everything is just tighter, so I almost have too much going on to say for sure. 😂 Definitely looking forward to getting some more miles on the new setup and seeing how the tires stack up.
@kennethrichardson1654
@kennethrichardson1654 Год назад
@@NC944er In a search of several forums, it seems like "squishy" is a common occurrence by some users of these tires. Tire Rack recommends breaking them in over several hundred miles. I figure if they are still squishy after 500 miles, I'll replace them. I'm hoping that is not the case. I too replaced 10 year old 15 inch michelins, and to be honest, the handling I am experiencing is worse... My car is on Koni adjustable sport shocks/struts that are relatively new. No other suspension modifications that i am aware of. I do have stock anti sway bars, and am thinking of upgrading those. I'm getting an alignment tomorrow, maybe that will help too. I'll let you know!

@@kennethrichardson1654 Hmm, I wonder if that’s something recent, like a change in the composition to the new “plus” version? I didn’t super research them before purchase, but saw they were pretty highly rated in their category. Now you’re gonna have me looking for the squishy-ness. 😂
@kennethrichardson1654
@kennethrichardson1654 Год назад
@@NC944er I run this same type tire on a 2011 Boxster Spyder and never felt anything close to squishiness. I do wonder if the profile is a factor? My spyder tires are 35 vs the 55/50 of the 944 set up.

Another great video! One comment about that brake dust that gets built up over years. You can remove it with Iron Fallout detail spray. However it will take a lot of applications and scrubbing. However the car-detail products are extremely expensive. One trick I have been using with the wheels I pull from the junk yards, is to use the Iron Out powder product sold at big box stores, that is meant for rust stain removal on toilets and tubs. I have a large tub of water, outside, and about half a jug of this iron out, and a bit of degreaser. Let them sit for a day, and then scrub them off. It might take a few days to get it all removed, but is worth it. I have restored some wheels with out the need to have them re-powdered. Sometimes I have even surprised myself with the results! Here is the product: summitbrands.com/iron-out-rust-stain-removers/powder/
