It was an early model that inspired my passion for these cars, Gemini Grey over Black Leather with Cookie Cutter wheels.

I was shopping for my first car, having just turned 16. It was waiting on the pre-owned lot of the local Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge dealership. Coming from a small-town, middle-class family with three kids, it was well beyond our price range… higher than the value of my mother’s car at the time. But she could see my unbridled excitement and she feigned interest to the salesman, entertaining my dream for a fleeting moment.

I’ll never forget the sensation of the exhaust growl when I started that car, the smell of the leather and oil, the movement of the downward-sweep tachometer. Everything aligned and it all felt perfect.

While I ended up with a cool, but not nearly as amazing, high-mileage 1985 Toyota MR2 for a fraction of the cost, the 944 dream lives on... in a slightly different iteration.
