I watched your video as I find them all excellent viewing , even though I must have removed mine many many times over the 33 years I've owned the 944, and I can manage this task without much help😊 But...... Watching it gave me a tip on managing underside air flow . You pointing out the revised tray with the forward 4 vents blocked made me modify my own tray and I've fibreglassed over the same 4 vents. I'm doing this as last year visiting Germany and doing high speed runs, my car went scarily light at the front end at 145mph (GPS recorded) and I had to lift although it was still pulling strongly. I plan on going back this year and have already fitted a front splitter and 2x stays and now this tray modification I'll be able to try a top speed run without lifting. Keep producing this videos, they're great and very informative.

Yeah, engine tray removal is about is basic as it gets. 😂 But to your point, I was hoping there would be some other useful details to share, like the part updates. It’s interesting to see just how many seemingly insignificant parts Porsche revised over the years. Those are some high speeds my friend, stay safe and let me know if you notice a difference with the front vents now sealed off. The original Porsche wind tunnel tests from 1990 are probably different to find at this point.

Ah, I knew you'd find another part to replace! How much dust was on the packaging, particularly of those spacer washers? I had no idea those were a thing, mine has none of them. You were probably the first person to buy any!
@NC944er
@NC944er 7 месяцев назад
The washers are pretty obscure and very overpriced, eclipsed only by the alien-looking, s-shaped spring clips on top of the radiator, but it is now factory correct, so +1 purist point in that regard. 🤣

Another great video. My 87 N/A was missing that as well. I've read somewhere that there is an opinion out there that the removal promotes better engine cooling. I'm not sure about that, so I installed one on mine. No problems with overheating that i can tell....
@NC944er
@NC944er 6 месяцев назад
Ha! That’s interesting, I haven’t heard that. I do know that Porsche conducted wind tunnel tests, even back then on the 924, 944, and other cars, so there would have to be a benefit in their minds. One would think that engine cooling is optimized by the greatest volume of consistent air moving through the radiator fins, for which it seems that the engine tray would promote by making the airflow more directional, but what do I know? 😂

My 87’s panel was coated in P/S fluid & road salt. I removed it and was surprised it wasn’t cracked. A good cleaning and some SEM black plastic paint and it looks new. New seals in P/S rack installed too.

Oh man, yeah power steering leaks are the worst, gets all over everything down there. Sounds like the cleaning and re-coat was a good solution. 👍

Yep, time to sell the car and start over! 😂 I went without one for so long because every 2-3 drives I was checking under the car for the next fluid leak. Doesn’t make much sense until everything’s sorted.

It's a shame how many previous owners discarded the under trays. My car is absolutely more stable above 100mph with it installed.
@NC944er
@NC944er 7 месяцев назад
Yeah, like who does that? Let me just throw out this giant panel that Porsche put here for no reason. 😂
@anthonydietmeier6524
@anthonydietmeier6524 7 месяцев назад
@NC944er well it does add an extra 4 minutes to every under-front-of-car project, which equates to an extra 10 hours a month of wrenching time for me (lol) but it probably comes off less than once a year for most owners. If people understood aero and cooling better they might not be so quick to toss parts.

Have had my 85.1 since October and your videos have been indispensable and inspiring! Hoping to make my car as gorgeous as yours, thank you! I have a question as one of my biggest challenges so far is dealing with water leaks in a rainy climate. The one I’m not sure how to approach results in water in the driverside footwell and I sourced it out with a smoke tester. With the smoke tube shoved behind the carpet by the hatch release switch, smoke comes out from the back part of the fender where it meets the door. It’s not a door seal issue, I’m wondering if there’s a seam water is getting in there. Any ideas?
@NC944er
@NC944er 6 месяцев назад
Oh man! Yeah, water leaks can be a real pain to chase down. It also doesn’t help that Porsche seems to have implemented a design philosophy of allowing water “into” the car as a method for getting it “off” of the car. 😂 Specifically, the sunroof drainage lines and the rear hatch pin drain tubes can crack, get clogged, or become detached from their connection points, which allows surface water to directly enter the cabin. Other common causes include delamination of the rear hatch glass as well as the windshield glass along the lower edge where the seal dries out and fails. A rusty battery tray is also high up on the list and known for dumping water into the passenger footwell. As for the driver’s side, it’s possible that the A/C evaporator drain line has cracked or become disconnected, this would be less likely if you haven’t been running the A/C regularly. Based upon your description, I would check for cracks in the metal and seam seals around the chassis/fender/firewall in the engine compartment below the windshield. There are areas in this section of the car where sealant dries out or the metal fatigues and opens up a hairline crack. The seals around the top of the blower motor assembly are yet another entry point, really the list goes on and on, but those are the most common. I’ll include a link below that has a semi-consolidated list to think about, but checking the Rennlist forums will provide a lot of additional suggestions as well. In addition to the smoke testing, you can also try dumping water down suspected areas and observe potential pathways inside the car. I had water pooling in the rear passenger footwell, but the entry point ended up being the lower windshield. I had to feel around on the side wall carpeting to trace down areas that were the most damp and move up from there. Best of luck! There are no other vendors that supply Shoulder Washers?
@NC944er
@NC944er 6 месяцев назад
I haven't found any that are the exact Porsche spec... I checked Belmetric, nothing close. The nearest I could find was from MaierUSA (link below). There are small variances in O.D. and shoulder height from the Porshce units, although I believe they would otherwise work, but they are stainless steel rather than yellow zinc. Might be a good way to go if cost savings is the ultimate goal: 25 pieces for $17. Here are the specs for comparison: Porsche spacer washer - 6mm I.D. X 18mm O.D. X 1mm thick, shoulder height 3mm X 8mm O.D. MaierUSA shoulder washer - 6mm I.D. X 15mm O.D. X 1mm thick, shoulder height 2mm X 8mm O.D. maierusa.com/products/69991-shoulder-washers-6mm

Yeah, I’ll throw out a guess that 34.8% of 944s no longer have one. I’m surprised they still make them honestly. Get one before the go up to $500 and then completely disappear. 🤣
