From what I remember, there is a set screw on the shift rod back by the transaxle that you can loosen, adjust the angle up front, and then tighten back down to hold that alignment.

Totally had the same problem with the shifter, my less elegant solution was to sick a VW "widowmaker jack" in the opening and use it like the jaws of life to widen the opening. I wish I thought of this first.

For your shifter clearance problem. From what I see, you should just remove two washers from the right side and put them at the left side. So you avoid to have to bend it but I may miss something. :) Thanks for 944 vid, we don't have that much on the web! Continue your good work!! Cheers!

I'm looking right at it and you have a couple washers besides the torrington. Why? The nut and lock go on the left, can you remove a couple of washers or is it a shoulder bolt? If it is a shoulder bolt, turn down the shoulder the thickness of the two extra washers. Or make a trip to the bolt drawer and get a collar and use a panhead bolt screw and cut the spacer\collar down so you don't need additional shim washers. Dude Guy, weight saving bonus!!! Insane people actually go through entire chassis and drivetrain replacing all fasteners with titanium ones and remove any additional length. Sometimes even using thinner washers and nuts depending on function and never leaving more than 3 threads exposed when tight. It can save up to 100 pounds or more on some cars. Pppppricy and time consuming.

Right about the shift knob sounding like a speaker. I bought my MGB with a wood shift knob, made all sorts of noise. Replaced with the factory black plastic knob, no more noise.

I have the same kit installed on my 944. The feeling is absolutely awesome! You will love it! Can't wait to see your impressions on the road with it! With the short shift kit and the shifter, you should have started with the short shift and the linkage on the transmission, and then, you install the shifter. If everything is all in place, it should give you the clearance you needed automatically. The short shift reduces the amplitude of the shifter enough so you don't have to work on it like you did. It would have avoided you a headache, and maybe a foot cramp too! ;) Have fun and take care! :)

I've got a similar wheel in my '87 924S. It looks amazing in there.

One thing to keep in mind if you are going to change the steering wheel - clearance. 944 wheels are mounted off center to help give some clearance to your thighs. If you need more clearance for your thighs you need to go very small on the replacement wheel.

Casey, I'm hoping you do a 944 rear window fix video, the right way of course. Hopefully that's in your future for someone else's car not yours. Just did a clutch and rear main seal on my 1987- 944S. So many people say how bad it is to do, actually I thought it was quite fun to do. It's not hard just takes some time.

I've put a prototipo on my 924, same dash, you can see the dials just fine. Speedo in the center and the and the rev's swings from 5 o'clock up, the smaller wheel only blocks view into red line.

Martini and Rossi stripes are a go! Knipex plug was good too. Always loved their stuff. On the subject of tools...if you ever have time Casey give us a shop tool rundown. Looks like you get a lot of use out of your shop tools like benders cutters,welder etc. Be nice to hear some honest reviews/recommendations for people on a budget

Wow someone finally got the becker exhaust. I can't believe everything you did I have done or have it and doing it. Great stuff.

You can get an adapter piece to make the flat bar into a round tube so you can put your shift knob of choice.

I have that exact shifter arm. As well as the short shifter and linkage arm on my 924. Didn't buy the tail light dongle's cause i was lucky and still had a spare broken taillight assembly so I salvaged it for parts and made my own.

i have the exact same gear noise issue with the short shifter in my nc miata. the stock shifter has a thick rubber that separates the upper and lower shafts but in the aftermarket short shifter it doesnt, so the wood knob i have is SO noisy. luckily i can put the stock knob back on thats made of thick plastic so it quiets it down a bit. im considering putting the stock shifter back in anyway because the new one isnt smooth at all. the good thing about now having that steering wheel hub is you can go crazy and get just about any aftermarket wheel you want on there. momo, sparco, omp, nardi, personal will all swap out with just the 6 bolts. if you want a more patina'd prototipo they can be found all day on ebay in various states of wear. i think something like a momo indy would look great in there too. also some $10 leather "driving" gloves will give you great grip on that new momo leather.

You "could drill & Tap a Black Hex Head (Allen) Screw into the Side and then Drill a small Hole to the Shifter Arm to locate & keep the knob from coming off... But make sure to use BLUE Loctite to keep it from "Walking out". Simple & easy fix suggestion from Washington State! Take care Casey, 🤓 -Thomas Port Orchard, Washington

The yellow Momo button looks way better with the gauges, good call there and deffinitly a smart idea using the more comfortable shifter. If the RTV doesnt work so well, or you worry about it cracking through and not holding, you can use a small screw through one side of the shifter and knob. The knob on the Volvo 240's M47 trans have that habit after it ages and pops off way too often on quick 1-2 shifts; best way to fix it on them seems reasonable on the Porsche. Im looking forward to seeign those stripes on the car; nice splash of color

I love the Martini stripes! I’m using them on the walls in my new garage, I wanted something to dress up the place but still want primarily white walls to reflect the light since I’ll actually work on cars in it and not just be a show piece.

Be careful with the using the wrong momo, if you use a late hub on a early 944 it can cause electrical fires. I learned the hard way.

Casey, I recommend that you check on that shifter at your next oil change to make sure everything is still nice and tight. because of how hiem joints are, they might become loose with vibration. Oh and make sure that lock-wire is still on there too! Much luck!

Loving it all Casey keep up the good work! I have a white 83 944 that I am "trying" to restore as well . The latest challenge has been getting a firewall brace welded in. These cars are truly labor of love. BTW I dig the Martini stripes too!

Interesting phenomenon with the wood knob. My 96 Miata came with one installed by a previous owner. It didn't do that I could tell but there's so much noise with the top down anyway how would I tell? :) But the boot was trash so I got a nice new leather one from Redline Goods and when I went to install it discovered the knob was seized to the shifter. Despite putting a welding glove over it I still trashed it grabbing it with pliers. So I wound up putting a stock knob back on and found I liked it much better as it has more weight than the wooden one did. Made the shifts nicer.

12:54 i feel you there, however i have learned over the years the time spent dottling around you could have removed it bent it, more professionally looking too, and put it back in. All lazy does is makes it more difficult.

You should look at hybrid racing’s titanium shift rods if u wanna change the look of the original shift knob and it’s a lot more precise

I was going to say the yellow hub goes with the VDO gauges but then you mentioned it as well.

Curious how that exhaust is going to sound. As I am sure you know most of the 944 exhausts tend to be really raspy.

If you can get a centre-cap for the steering wheel that has a Porsche badge on it, that would be preferable, otherwise I'd say the yellow was the right call. I'd try to make some other small parts yellow too, just to tie it all together - maybe pick up a gearstick gaiter with yellow stitching, or paint the H-pattern in yellow,

Hey Casey. If you want, look into Carbotech Brake Pads since you mentioned your boomer trick. They might be a bit on the slightly pricier end, but they don't have super corrosive material in the pads and are usually easier to clean off. They're a ceramic kevlar compound and have a good sport pad for the street. Many track racers swear by these pads and enjoy how they feel since they act quite linear. They can also put any of their compounds on a pad core if you send it their way in case you want to try their race pads for your Corvette ;)

Older 944s have a 21mm spline and I believe they can take 911 wheels from 73-77 era. A later 944 has a 17mm and cannot, although if you swap your car to a manual steering box you can.

Have the same issue with the shifter. All I did was put the bolt in the other way, and it worked. Hope that helps.

The Boxster also uses an Audi transaxle.

there is a bolt in the shifter linkage on the transaxle that adjusts the shifter rod angle, seems like you found your own solution though lol

As you were working on the shifter I couldn't see what bolts you were removing. It is something I would like to do in my 924 and my 944, so seeing what you did would have been good. I like the car though they are a model that needs to be kept on the roads.
