The 981 generation Porsche Cayman market had been red hot, but things are starting to look not so good if you are hoping to sell a Porsche 918 Cayman. However if a 981 Cayman is on your wish list then the market is starting to make that dream more realistic.

I am not in 100% agreement with this. I think like any other Porsche, the most desirable examples (CS, 6MT, interesting color well-optioned, well-documented, lower mileage) will remain at higher price points. That said, buy what you want when you can afford it and drive the hell out of it. Life is marching on and waiting endlessly to "time" a Porsche purchase robs you of being able to enjoy the cars. Nobody has a crystal ball, so live your life for today, not in the future just to save a few thousand bucks.

Oh just ask my wife, I’m wrong quite often. Your advice is probably best and I should include something like that at the end of future market updates. The one thing that trying to buy if the market goes down would be if it was just out of reach for you before and now you can buy one. Of course the problem with that is someone in that position probably can’t afford to maintain that particular Porsche properly because they are stretching themselves financially. In that case it is probably better to see if another year or model would fit your budget better leaving money should something go wrong and to keep up on maintenance. Otherwise they should save a bit more cash before buying to be safe. Incidentally, I’ve enjoyed your videos for a while, but apparently wasn’t subscribed, so I corrected that. Keep up the good work. Thanks for watching and for sharing your thoughts.

I agree that top versions (gts / gt4 / Spyder) especially in rare colors (pts) will keep their value pretty well. These cars probably belong to the best sounding Porsche models ever built and deliver an unique driving experience without the need of technical features. I don’t agree with the role of the transmission in these more modern cars. As AT in air cooled models was simply a less good decision in comparison to the MT you really need to be a MT enthusiast saying the PDK wasn’t a great choice in these cars. It’s simply faster, still engaging and has the huge advantage of being able to completely focus on pure driving. Regarding the change of Generations in the potential future buyer market I guess there will be also less fans of MTs. In my opinion the transmission choice won’t affect the prices in these models anymore. The MT cars are more rare, the PDK cars are the faster ones. Both good reasons to choose one or the other..

I’d been looking for a 981 Cayman S since early fall. Finding the right color and options took a lot of searching and I set alerts on all the major listing sites. Four good choices came from those sources, but one was sold and the other three had some issues upon inspection. In late November a very good spec CS in a desired color popped up on an alert. It was with Carvana and within a week they dropped the price $5K. The car passed a PPI with only one issue - the very common in warm climates warped door card tops. They discounted the car an additional $800 and a deal was done. Just over $48K for a 51K mile 2015 one owner, full service history, clean Carfax Cayman S with an original MSRP of $83K and all the desired options except rear camera which I just installed and had turned on in the PCM system by a local independent shop. None of the online Carvana horror stories manifested themselves and everything went smoothly. I expected the 981 prices to fall, but only found that to be true of base models not the S over the last few months. Most S models have stubbornly stayed in the $55K and up price point. Thanks to Carvana cutting prices to boost cash flow, I did manage to get a deal a bit above your quoted 12% drop number. Interestingly, the 718 market was the market in free fall. I wanted the flat 6 and not the turbo flat 4, but was tempted by 2017 and 2018 base 718’s with good options and under 40K miles in the high $40’s to low $50’s. All the non Porsche dealers selling them told me that auctions are flooded with coming off lease 718’s and they are going for mid to high $40’s. Add $7-10K for S models to those auction numbers. Even 911 numbers are dropping as 997.2 models were selling under $50K for base Carreras. 991.1 models from 2013 and 2014 were plentiful at around $60K. All of these 911 variants had mileage under 60K.

Thanks for all of your information and I probably should have divided it by model as you mentioned about the S model not seeing the same drop in price. The 718 market is an interesting one to look at as many want the mid-engine flat-six over the Turbo charged flat-four. Of course if the price keeps dropping quickly they become a lot more tempting. Awesome that you got a great deal and sounds like an awesome car. Enjoy it as often as you can. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

I'v watched your videos before but I have to disagree with this one. It's quite the opposite here in Florida all Porsche's are way over priced and now is the time to sell but not to buy. The market has gone up with Porsche cars ridiculously over priced and Carvana at the highest of them all. Cool video though!

Hey just ask my wife, I’m wrong all the time. You make some good points about depending on you area and even within a state you might have one area where the market is still hot and another that is still cooling. I recently started an experiment testing out the market and will have the results early in the new year. I do a lot of this from national research, but thought a true test would make for more valid information. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.

987.2 and 981 going to maintain its price because of turbo versions and 50 mpg rules.

It somewhat depends on the particular 996, but some examples have maintained more of their value than others. One of the videos I’m working on is a real world example with the 996 which will hopefully be helpful. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
