sorry but none of those points were unknown if you did any amount of research prior to purchase. its slower than the equivalent coupe? yes but Porsche tell you that and you cant beat the laws of physics in that a heavier car will always be slower than a lighter car if they have the same power. the roof is not allowed by law to open on the move as has already been posted and to be honest i wouldnt open the roof on my targa on the move even if it were possible. cant say i have ever tried to open the roof with the key fob. buffeting? maybe but again the first video on youtube from 2014 told us that. the targa is a compromised car for sure but you put up with the minor downsides to enjoy the best looking 911. i must be lucky as i have not had sqeaky brakes on the 2 991's i have owned. one last thing isnt the car on Cridfords website on sale?
I just got a 2019 991.2 targa 4 gts and my jaw was sore from smiling the first 3 days. What an incredible driving experience. The 991.2 3.0L is ridiculously fast
Lots of bad info.. The spoiler is up at slower speeds and down at higher speeds. It's in the manual if you want to read it. Also - with the spoiler down and the windows up but lowered just an inch,. the buffeting is very minimal. Also - 19 seconds for the roof. I've done it a traffic light with no issue. There actually is also a simple way to have one press operation of the top (check out modsforcars). And for brake squeal - not something I've ever noticed on my 991.2 Targa 4s.
Spot on. Drop the windows by an inch and use the front diffuser and the experience is greatly improved. Ditto the mod4cars module - in US it means that I can triple press lock/unlock and the roof will drop/raise plus also adds the one touch up/down and also low speed raise/lower capabilities.
I've watched an liked your videos in the past. But this one - come on. These issues are hardly "hate-worthy". You need to put things into proper perspective. And, you're right, your title for the video is shameless click-bait.
Love that fade out shot with the white socks pulled up and the black trainers…… Stylish car deserves stylish driver. Suggest you review your sock and footwear choices to wear with shorts. Please please don’t look like a Brit abroad…
Brake squeal is generally caused by the type of pads that are used. High performance pads and track pads are often noisier than street pads. You might try a set of EBBS Redstuff or other ceramic pads for less dust and less noise while still maintaining good performance.
@@davidreyes4231 Just the opposite. I love the Targa. I just hate clickbait titles. That was a clickbait title. Or were you responding to the original post?
I have a cousin, who lives in Cranleigh, which is very near to Cridfords. Maybe worth him taking a look at their 2015 Targa, along with a peek at its registration document.
Cant move and put top up and down because the window blocks the brake light which is against the law. I have a 992 Targa 4S on order! White metallic with bordeau and black interior.
That massive piece of heavy glass would create a load of drag and would probably break if you were moving - its not a bit of cloth like on the boxster.
Not the black alloys for me Al. They make the car look dull where as the silver makes the car pop! Interesting debate on your target though about things you don't like. I would love to have a target as my next Porsche.
The black wheels are a result of the “40 something Dads” who make up the higher proportion of buyers and designers. I give you the Audi “Black” range. Never a duller car has been seen. Appropriate amounts of chrome and silver hightlights will always make a vehicle “pop”.
my 991.1 brakes non ceramic have never squealed in over 7 years, brake squeal usually happens from improper bed-n of the pads, or large dust build up mourned the calipers, not a "brand" trait...
I definitely prefer the silver wheels. The RS Spyder wheels might have some potential too. Guys, he said himself it was a clickbait title. Give it a rest. It’s to be expected. Top 5 things I love followed by top 5 things I hate. Welcome to social media.
I've just bought a 2014 991.1 4S Targa. Mine has got ceramic brakes and they do squeal a bit. I much prefer to my 2012 991.1 4S Coupe. I haven't noticed the weight difference nor the drop in performance. Can't wait for a bit of sunshine!
I would love it if you would feature a 928 at some point. I know it’s the red headed step child to 911 fans but it is a legit Porsche model. Great channel so far.
I've always liked the Targa best of the 911s for styling, and it's the only one I'd consider owning. Very surprised to hewar about buffetting though. I have owned a Ferrari 248 GTS, a Lotus Elise, and now have an Alfa Romeo 4c. All targas and NONE had a buffetting problem. Where is that supposed superior German engineering. I mean if the Italians can solve the problem on two different cars......
Love being able to put my boxster roof down up to 30mph, really helps in real world situations. Also you dont have to keep finger on the button when moving, just press once and let go.
Wow. I can do well over 200 km/h with my roof down on my 991 C4S Cab without any buffeting at all. Even hands free phones calls above 160 are easy. Thanks for that information, I’m about to order a 992.2 GTS, and I was considering a Targa.
Brake squeel: I have a 996 and I did not have anykinda brake squeel with the OEM discs and pads. But I had to replace them for weariing out and I put Brembo discs and semi-track pads and they squeel, sometimes quite a lot. Obviously the pad material is different but the major difference is that the OEM pads had weights at the back to damp the squeel and the new ones do not. The weight is a little lump of mass, cylindrical, about an inch in diameter and maybe 1/2 inch in depth and it pits in the pocket of the piston. Instead of those I added titanium spacers between the pad back and piston as a thermal barrier between the heat generation and the brake fluid on the other side of the piston. This is a common trick in racing circles. And now my brakes squeel - just like racing cars do :)))). Gives me instant respect at the service station cafe park :))))
Its stunningly beautiful thats for sure , it looks so solid. The only downside on this 991 Targa is the targa roof itself. If it goes wrong as all thing do, it will not be an easy fix.Yet I still love it.
I own a 992 Targa 4 S and to date have had no brake squeak issues….lucky so far. I can also say that I was a BMW salesman for over 30 years and can tell you that 98% of all M cars in the last 10 years have squeaky brakes and the factory also told us that it was a characteristic of the M cars performance brakkes and that our clients had to accept this.
I have ordered a 911 Targa 4GTS and don’t expect allocation until winter 2023. Your comments on the wind noise remains concerning. The wind deflector adjustable bar definitely needs improvement. I am hoping Porsche address this in 2023. We are doing a euro delivery and plan to spend time in Italy, where we have stayed before. You commented on you do provide insight on trips. Perhaps we should connect.
I had brake squeal on my 2016 Cayenne and got the same answer from Porsche and the dealer. It drove me nuts. I traded it for a 2019 and have never had a brake problem again.
The brakes squeal because they want you to upgrade to carbon-ceramics. I like the look of the Targa but the wind buffeting issue makes me think that the Cabriolet is a better choice.
Former owner of a 1996 - 993 C4S, and had ZERO brake squeal from standard 993 Turbo brakes. They're bullshitting you! Have a Toyota Camry drive car now (since new) with 192,000 km - still on original brakes - pads and discs. YES - correct - they're the ORIGINAL pads and discs. NO BRAKE SQUEAL and brakes still stop / work fantastically well. With pad material left they will easily run to 220,000km. Discs in great condition and virtually zero lipping. RE - BLACK WHEELS - I hate black wheels on ANY car.
I have a 991.1 targa gts. Using the mod4cars device I can easily raise and lower roof with one click up to 10mph. I can also put the roof down or up after parking with the key fob....
I believe the reason why Porsche made the car with safety and quality was the main concern. The ability to drive at 5-10 mph would pose a safety issue considering it’s glass and wind not mixing well. Also more cost on research and development to have the feature while meeting safety & quality for the consumer. Also with the key pad the purpose of the button being held to remove the top. The user can’t complain About malfunction/error bc the user has to manually remove the top.. lift glass lol see where I’m going with this?? So yea.. Thanks for the vid keep up the great work! Thanks!
Fortunately Never had an issue with brake noise on my 991.2 GTS Cab Ellis, think you are mistaken the Cridford car has different sports side skirts if you look. Looking forward to my 992 Gts cab in march hopefully no brake noise !
My 2013 S6 has awful brake squeal. I have new pads and other hardware to swap out, just need weather to warm up. Hopefully the squeal is fixed. So annoying.
Non Porsche wheels do look beautiful. I do think the GTS really should have centrelocks. Your concerns about creaks and roof mechanism was enough to make me cancel my purchase and get my deposit back. Bought the GTS coupe insteadandhave not lpoked back! The Targa is a lovely thing though.
It is bizarre how small a driver's head appears when sitting in these late model Porsches. You might try some heavy braking from high speed per several times to get pads and rotors accustomed to each other to be rid of the squeal.
if he lost abt 25 kg of stomach fat, took out the rear seats, put a carbon fiber frunk lid , and a few other weight-saving tweaks, he should be able to get to the performance of the coupe.
Regarding your comment about brake squeal...the Ferrari does have it as well. It's a bit frustrating... wonder if changing pads to a different material would address...
Hi sash, what happened with your white Cayman S? As an fyi, i like the silver 5 spoke rims much better than the black rims. I have a 2015 Boxster gts and changed the rims from black 20” to silver 19”. The car just looks better with the silver rims, but wish i had them in 20”!
For the amount of money they want for that car, brakes should not squeak at all. Just a matter of time before issues arise with the roof. Get your check book ready for that. The black wheels are awful. The new wheels will be much better.
I have a 996 C4 Cab X51, as well as a tuned C7 Audi S6. I have a client that let me take his 991 C4 Targa S out. My initial thoughts were it's too tame and doesn't feel aggressive or fast. Once I switched it into sport mode though, it really woke up. Felt like a completely different car
If this Porsche dealer told you brakes squeal as a characteristic of the car go to another dealer or Porsche specialist. Maybe try copper grease or alternative pads. Also I know it’s annoying with the roof button having to hold the button. It’s the same on two other convertibles I drove a BMW 220i and Boxster GTS 4.0
I used to like the look and idea of a Target.... Now i see it as... Not quite Convertible or Coupe.... Kind of is 3 looking now. The wind noise.... Another review was able to mix themselves for a Targa AG's be totally clear. Throttle House. The electronic top.... What if you're driving she there's nowhere to pull over and stop?? Vsa convertible where you can be driving 60km and raise lower the too... More usual. Plus diet the Targa you need to undo the rectangular roof and store it.. Thy that driving on a highway
I love my 991.1 targa , happy with the roof.. only issue is brake squeel which i agree is embarassing. Imagine you drive nice car and then it stopped with that high pitch squeel ...eeeeee...
Al, great video. Your hate title could easily be dislike- but who cares, ignore the comment haters. Appreciate all your honesty about your cars in your videos. Some people might fault you for being picky, and I appreciate all the details you discuss and go over. Things that you wouldn’t know unless owning the car. I can honestly say this new style of Targa is stunning looking, but Im saving to buy my 1st 991, and was considered the Targa, but after watching this probably will just get an S or GTS Coupe. I want a car that performs, and i don’t want to sacrifice being able to have the top open for that. Im paranoid and wouldn’t park the car with the top off anyway, so I’d constantly be putting it back up. It’s like a Sunroof, I’m actually trying to find an S or GTS without the sunroof, i think they’re just not useful, and even if they don’t affect the integrity of the car, it’s still a hole in the roof of what is otherwise a solid piece. i love the Targa and it’s look, but if i’m only going to own one Porsche, it’s a Coupe for me I think. Keep up the great videos👍 I appreciate how much you know about these cars, and the comments about “you don’t know” are rubbish, you do know, but an opinion from you who’s owned several 911’s is valuable and on point, period…by the way, if you sold this car, who cares, put out some more videos on your next Porsche, thank you
Best scrap it... those issues are awful... 😁 most roofs get in a pickle if you operate them on the move, safety and lots of moving parts. interesting vid as usual.. for a moment I thought you had fallen out of love... 😂😂😇
Targa top operation solved. I installed mods4cars SmartTop module on my 991.1 Targa 4S in less than 10 minutes. One touch open/close with speeds up to 15 mph. One touch operation with key fob as well. No need to hold down button. Flawless, VERY simple upgrade. Brake squeal problem solved as well. Centric Posi-Quiet semi ceramic brake pads. Great performance, inexpensive, and also cuts down on brake dust by 50%+ Wind buffeting with wind deflector raised is almost non existent below 75mph. And really, who cares about the aesthetics of the wind deflector at that speed. With the incredible lines of that car, I guarantee no one is going to notice a 2” wind deflector. And regarding weight, who cares! Simply adding a performance exhaust system (Soul Performance Exhaust + street cats) /flash tune will increase your horsepower enough to offset the increased weight.
Hias @TPN TV! Im anout to buy a porsche cayman 718 GTS from 2019 (end of year). Do you think its a good purchase? im really worried about major depreciation from the future of cars since theyr going all electric? What do you think?
i had the sport classic wheels on a 718 Cayman GTS and those silver wheels are not OEM wheels. i actually quite like the wheels but they are after market wheels.
I own a 996 and while it's considered the ugliest 911 by many purist, at least is isn't as pathetically huge and heavy as the current 991. I look at all modern water cooled 911's with distain. Being quick is for children. The only 911 worth owning is a air cooled 964.
You can buy a one touch drop kit that will also let you drop the roof wile driving. You can also set the speed of what it will operate up to. You can lock the car and walk away while the roof closes. It takes about 5 mins to fit, so removal of it is easy on service or warranty issues at dealers. Mine is a cab which also give more use of the rear windows..
Great video, you need to keep finger on the button due to functional safety, you cannot operate the roof whilst moving as the wind speed drag would require the hinges etc to be much stronger adding more additional weight
