So the new 911 Cabriolet has been released, and it has been reviewed - but by people driving it on lovely roads over in Germany as part of the official press launch. I'm taking this tasty looking car out on more familiar territory - the back roads of Britain - to see if the new 911 is still king of the road.

@@jwprosper yea well.. If you just want the numbers, just read the brochure? I agree with LeoKal. Cars nowdays are so good/fast that the actual numbers are more or less meaningless really. all of them are more than enough. And with the lack of feeling in a lot of modern cars, be it styling wise, steering, sound or whatever.. I'd say thats the more defining factor nowdays.

I had the chance of a 992 demonstrator for the day, and thought it was brilliant. Bang on the money and very accomplished for the new decade considering all the current legislation and competition. I'm placing an order and this will be my 5th 911. When comparing the 992 against the competition for price vs performance, it's a no brainer. However, I do value your opinion, but I disagree with your conclusions.

Porsche is royalty but even royalty can age and become a little dumpy in the latter years. I agree with Jay, they are trying to be modern and still show some heritage at the same time. It kind of works. The waistline has grown and I suspect the weight has increased but then I suppose the same is true of us as well. Look we have to give credit where it is due. The prestige factor is off the scale and the clubhouse will be impressed.

Took my hairdryer 4S (the last of the naturally aspirated) on the autobahn from U.K. to Prague 3 years ago- floored it - amazing excitement and exhilaration for several hours! …. But …. I bet I would have had similar excitement flooring a Miata if I am totally honest and we don’t have the autobahn here. Journalists always harp on about excitement and numbers and ‘feel’ Real world driving though - I like my license, I like life easy, I like dependability, I like it ‘steady’ but with the ability to put a smile on my face. The roads are pot holed hell, and pollution ain’t good. Im still a petrolhead (although I also drive an all electric) but I live in the real world too and for me this 911 simply reflects that.

You have see the 992 in person, nice proportions and the iconic lines of old, arches are stunning. 992 has a cleaner lower rear still, they could have done the exhausts coming through the bumper without the black plastic. and too bad UK get the OPF behind the exhausts dampens the sound.

1. Interior can be customized. I probably will do all black interior if I ever bought 911. 2. Sport is for "drama", so more pop and cracks. Sport Plus is for track use. Lap times is all that matters there. 3. The non-GTS, in general, rides more supple than the GTS counterparts, no suprise there. 4. There's no direct competition for 911, unless you can find another car that have rear engine, rear/all wheel drive layout with 6-cylinder engine. 5. R8 got V10 engine from the start, ofc it will suit your preferences better. As you said, the particulate filter maybe the culprit in the 992, but we live in 2019. Another choice you can try is to experience Singer / Paul Stephens 'restomod' 911, maybe you'll find more joy there. Cheers! :D

My sentiments exactly.. Anybody new coming to the brand will have no issues with the new 911 and will love it.. but if you're coming from a 991.1 or .2, it's a not just a step too far.. but a leap too far.. Both my father and myself have 991.2 C2S (one coupe and one cab). Had the 992 cab C4S for a three days.. Couldn't find ONE SINGLE thing on the new 992 which is better than the 991.2 and that covers every aspect. OK, the steering is more direct and it turns in quicker.. but that doesn't qualify as it was more than sharp enough already. "Mr. Porsche" retired a model too late.. Has saved us money though.

Good review...as a 991.1 owner and also prior owner of a 997.2 and 997.1 and initially a 996 can understand each version has its special qualities and querks and also awesomeness. I drove the 992 after having my 991.1 in the shop for service and came out with an order and allocation for a car a month later. It does so much better than the 991.1 does albeit if you leave a few points on the table due to NA vs turbo charged engine. It truly out performs my 991.1 S in the base car and I only went to the 992 S due to wanting the manual 7spd transmission which was not out when you did this review. That is the sweet spot along with changed wheel base, wide body on all cars, and updated PCM which was very long in the tooth. Car is so much easier and fun to drive which is a plus but ban see also for those having experience in the older 911's may see it as a minus. However in my situation those prior 911's I owned led me to know exactly what I did want in the car and did not thus I was able to build my 992 exactly how I wanted and what I needed...maybe that is the key to satisfaction with the new car! As always there are somethings that Porsche got wrong (steering wheel vs gauges, black piano trim, GFE filter in Europe - thank god we don;'t have them here in the USA) but otherwise they got the majority of the car right and for the money and performance there is nothing else that competes without going say into Vantage territory maybe or LandRover F type redux and those still are a bit different cars and at the left and right boundaries of the 911 class. The new C8 Corvette must be mentioned but then again a lot different in money vs performance and not sure there are cross shoppers there either. Thanks JayEmm for the review and interested in thoughts..

Hey Rob, thanks for your comments. I have a 991.1 4s. First time owner of a 911. Love the car and especially the sound with Sports mode. However, the reviews for the 992 all seem spectacular except for Jayemm. Can you share what you didn’t like from your 991.1 and why you upgraded? I was looking at a used 992 S coupe but his comments about turbo lag is concerning. Is it that noticeable? A little bit of a tangent - I had to replace my serpentine belt twice with less than 20k miles. For some crazy reason, no one knows, it seems to wear out or strip right in the middle of the belt as if someone put a blade on it. Two belts with less than 20k miles is ridiculous. Anyways, look forward to your reply. Thanks in advance.

Jay, To preface my comments I think your take on the social media car review world is spot on and I recommend the channel to all of my friends/colleagues that are interested in cars. However I want to take issue with your opinion and the way it is expressed of the 992. Mainly because you were a big fan of the 991.2 GTS. I owned a 991.2 GTS for 18 months and now a 992 Carrera S for the past 7 months. I would like to point out the following which i think should be mentioned when you discuss the 992. It is massively spec dependant. Essentially when you drive the manual 991.2 GTS you really enjoyed it. Well the Carrera 2s can be specced to be incredibly similar to that car. Rear wheel steer, lowered suspension, sports exhaust, manual gearbox, alcantara parts in the cabin, black accents in all the right places. I don't profess to know more about 911's than you or to try and tell somebody their opinion is wrong. However I must say that driving a cabriolet(higher suspension), no sport design kit, hump at the back looks bigger as its cabriolet, 911 font badge on rear can be deleted, PDK instead of manual and then the opinion of the entire Carrera range choices being made from that felt a little harsh. Problems such as piano black accents, 5 dials behind the wheel, cheap feeling switches mixed with expensive feeling switches were all problems that existed with the 991.2 but are not mentioned as people are used to that now and don't see it any longer. I see the fact the 992 can feel like a GT car on the motorway yet just as sporty as the GTS on a B road as an advantage. The difference between normal and sport plus driving modes are vast in the 992 where as in the 991.2 GTS it was smaller. This mixed with the fact the 992 Carrera S can match most lap times of the 991.2 GTS shows that Porsche have broadened its abilities and lost none of it appeal. Except the exhaust note, PPF are the weak point of any Porsche sold from 2020 onwards. Lastly, keep up all the excellent content and good luck with all your work in 2021.

I'm only liking this video because this is a truly honest review and I'm not trying to hate on Porsche but you are bringing up every point I have complained about. They could do so much better for the price and they need to find out what they want to be in today's age. Either they're going to be a sort of sporty luxury car and call it that or they're going to be a real sports car that checks every box that a sports car must have for most people. I don't know to me after 2010 Porsche stopped making sports cars in order to accommodate non-car people and just sell them the badge kind of like Apple.

wow...hard hitting ….I drove the 992 on an extended test drive....surprisingly the salesmen really let me put it through its paces....I previously owned a beautiful 996 turbo which was a beast in how it devoured the road with such force.... I was impressed with the 992.... I think the 911 will always attract criticism.... I sort of get what you are alluding to.... there is something slightly sterile even though the car is in many ways astonishing....but the one thing I will say is that Porsche prices like their great competitor Ferrarri are truly outlandish.....somehow you can pay circa 80k for a Boxster when less than 8 years ago a 911 Carrara base model could be procured at circa 64k new....people are crazy considering paying 130k for a 992 cab...its an obscene price point...

Great - and refreshing - to see a review that is critical rather than gushing over the car and passing over the flaws. Terrifically awful 'gear lever', horrible dials (all digital dials will look naff in 10 years), farty sound (and contrived pops and bangs are a blight of modern sports cars), 130bhp not available as standard... there are so many things wrong with that car. And it won't matter at all, of course.

I have to say .. Never liked Porsche's because of the shape. But with the new 911 992 ? WOW. they have honed and perfected (nearly) the shape to the degree where dare I say .... 'it is beautiful'. I want one.

Love your review. My issues are that the front end when looked at from the side has too much of an overhang where the bumper is (I understand this is for crash regulations) Also that rear with the roof down has a touch of squatting elephant about it - the rest I love .

I’m sorry but £120k is just too much money for that car. Of all the cars both on the new and used marketplace you could have for £120k, this really wouldn’t be up there - is it in the same league as a 570s, DBS, R8 V10 Plus, NSX, AMG GTR, Ferrari FF... hmmm I don’t think so.

Hate modern 911's bar a 997 gt3/2 but given that even a 997 Carrera S was more GT than sports car I think they've now fully achieved that goal. 991 was ridiculously big. This 992 is the same platform but the retro modern detail mix is just about perfect. Styling imo looks fantastic. Problem is price. Very poor value for money. Given the sheer trouble VAG is in I think we can expect cheaper cars with less R&D.

I'm not a fan of the fake vents at the rear. I do quite like the front end though. I'm pretty impressed how close they got the headlight shape to early 911s considering pedestrian crash safety.

Do drivers in the UK routinely drive down the middle of the road like you do in this video? I know the roads you drove on are narrow. Also, I just bought a 911 Carrera and I do like it but I won’t dispute the points you make.

I hate the front fascia of the 992. Porsche tried to give it the "corporate" look which now sadly is the Macan & Cayenne. When I look at the new 911s (991.1 onwards) I see what I feel the original VW might have become. The 997.2 remains the best 911 in terms of size, dynamics and steering feel IMHO. I might go for a Taycan instead of a new 911 since the future is electric anyway (if I can ever find the money).

Surprised at your comment about torsional stiffness. I had a 991.2 cab for the day and it really did feel poor in that regard. It didn't have PASM however, which may make a difference The 981 boxster is, if I remember rightly about 50% stiffer in torsion and it really shows - it feels little different than the Cayman.

@@dagnut true - hopefully the new GT4s will be produced in bigger numbers but it seems if you want a really connected driving experience - for the money, it may now be better to go for the higher spec Cayman (I know - the 4 cylinder sounds bad) rather than the base model 911 - strange times...

I tried one and, whilst it was very accomplished, I preferred the look and feel of the 991.2 GTS that I ended up getting. The 992 is too expensive for a Carrera S as well. I'll be going back to naturally aspirated at some point, either with an older 911 or a 991.2 GT3 or similar once they get down to a price I can manage, but I can't fault my GTS so far. Keep up the great content - you deserve more subscribers in my opinion!
