This week we put the 996 generation of the Porsche 911 against the Honda S2000. This may seem like an odd pair to compare to each other, but the current market puts them in the same price range. I look at the numbers in the five key categories of, horsepower, performance, the "it" factor, reliability and price.

I own a 99 996, 05 NSX, and 09 S2000. The perfect trio of contrast and fun. Can't decide which I like the most. The fact that they're so different is why they can be owned together. Also, these cars come from a special era where anything older is gonna be breaking down, and anything newer is too techy with NAV screens and too many buttons.

I totalled my AP1 Honda S2000 and regret not buying it and having it rebuilt. Don't sell your S2k nothing is better, I recently bought a corvette as a replacement and I'm selling it. Doesn't come close to the S2k. Best car i've ever owned

I’m a Porsche fan, but based on the way values are going up I think you might regret selling the S2000. If you have enough garage space I would save up and add a 996 or 987 S to the garage when you can afford it. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

996 is totally reliable i own one... so many after market parts available - parts are cheap and this is a hidden gem

Can’t argue with that as I also own a 996 and for the over a year that I have owned it so far, it has been extremely reliable. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

"The problem with Honda it is... It's a Honda" When talking about performance in Motorsport that line is common to most ignorant people . Last few years in the highest form of Motorsport , F1, only A HONDA could beat Mercedes. Not even Fereari came close .In fact Honda has almost 80 wins in F1 while Porsche 26. In all Motorsport categories Honda has victories compared with Porsche. SuperGt ( faster than any other GT cup on the planet) , Le Mans lmp2 engine supplier, Indy Car, Touring cars , some GT competitions, and others .( + - 1000 wins ) Without talking about motorcycle racing where Honda beats any records .
@OurRideLife
@OurRideLife 3 года назад
Fair point and always good to see the passion. That line wasn’t meant to put down Honda’s Motorsport accomplishments, it was more about what the common person thinks. While many know about Honda in racing most don’t think of them as a high performance marquee overall the likes of Porsche, Ferrari or Lamborghini (and Lamborghini didn’t do any racing until recently). So, the “It” factor was more about how most people perceive each brand. Since for much of the time Porsche only made sports cars, until fairly recently, and Honda makes a large number of economy sedans, most don’t think of it as a high performance marquee. You do make good points about the Motorsport history and to be fair I should have briefly touched on that as I did elude to Porsche’s history. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.

@@OurRideLife i believe you talked with the tongue of most people but general audience can't really read between the lines On the other hand the point of view behind this is true. Honda are making a lot of regular cars, especially these days while Porsche had exclusively performance cars. Still cars like Nsx, S2000 were comparable with any cars in their categories in their days. But that's not representative for Honda . Other than that i appreciate someone who can change opinions and not some narrow mind like some reviewers. Very good points in the comparison of two cars overall even if S2000 was made to compete with first gen Boxster not the more powerful models.
@OurRideLife
@OurRideLife 3 года назад
@@endlesstwisties thanks and always fun to connect with passionate people. I’m going to give my opinion, but enjoy the comments because I often learn new information that perhaps I didn’t think about when putting together my notes. Thanks for mentioning the NSX as well as I need to remember to do a comparison of that as the original was quite a car and the newer is also a very interesting performance car. You are also correct about the Boxster being the more direct comparison, but prices have put the 996 generation 911 and S2000 in the same price range, so some may cross shop the two. The S2000 certainly can hold its own even with a car that originally would have been in a higher priced market.
@endlesstwisties
@endlesstwisties 3 года назад
@@OurRideLife i don't know the prices outside Europe to be honest. I can't afford taxes or maintenance for big displacement engines like Porsche has. S2000 is the best playful car i can have in my situation. That Nsx video would be nice. Maybe watching some Best Motoring episodes could help for track times compared with other cars back then.

Even the cheapest Porsche has Brembo brakes ,sports car suspension and high revving engines . Porsche was born on the race track. Honda on the other hand is just that , its massed produced ,not built for the track,,its built for the masses. ,It just looks like a sports car but isnt under the shell. --Im a mechanic ive taken apart both.
@OurRideLife
@OurRideLife 2 года назад
Good point. Both are good cars, but the Porsche takes its racing heritage to every car they make and the bulk of Honda’s business is sensible cars built to a price point. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

As a 911 owner, I can’t argue with you. That is probably why the two originally were in different classes. However, at the time of this video the 996 and S2K were around the same price, hence the comparison. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

On a mountain road I would pick a s2000 anytime ... ANYTIME !!! ... the handling of the s2000 ( owned both ) is insane ... the shifter is the best ever produced ... the 996 is more gentle and GT
@OurRideLife
@OurRideLife 3 года назад
All of that is why I gave the nod for performance to the S2000. Sure the 996 has more horsepower, but outside of the GT and Turbo cars I would give the S2000 the overall performance advantage. Of course both are great cars and a lot depends on how you like to drive. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

@@OurRideLife s2000 : you run it at 50 but it feels like 80 ... 996 : the opposite
@OurRideLife
@OurRideLife 3 года назад
@@pixelmixture3067 you do have a point. The early 3.4-litter 996 is closer, but I have been cruising down a back road and then down shocked that I’m almost hitting triple digits (I’ve since learned to watch my speed more closely). The base 986 Boxster is certainly closer to that type of feel and is probably the better apples to apples comparison. However, in the current market for a similar year, similar mileage example you are in the 996 price range.

@OurRideLife
@OurRideLife 3 года назад
There is a reason why the 996 was in a different market originally. I do find it how prices change over time, which is a large reason for this particular comparison. By the way I personally think that the ‘99 996 is the best year of the 996 (of course I may be a bit bias). Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

Seems like you want a Boxster. Because of the comparison. You'd get both the sporty convertible and the marquee brand. My daughter just got one.
@OurRideLife
@OurRideLife 3 года назад
Boxsters are wonderful cars. I drove a 986 Boxster for over six years and it was a fun dependable car for me. I did a video comparing the Boxster and the S2000 a while back (hopefully this video is better than that video as I hope I am improving). This comparison was mainly due to the depreciation of the 996 and how much the S2000 is getting right now. The Boxster is more of an apples to apples comparison and compared to the S2000 it is quite the bargain for a like year and mileage example. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.

@OurRideLife 3 года назад
I think you got it at a good time. Glad to hear it is going well for you as if I remember correctly, you had a few initial issues with the car. Sounds like they got sorted out which I am happy to hear. I was just looking at a few good 996 C4S cars for sale for another person and the lowest priced example had an asking price of $39K and the other was at $50K. They may have been a tad high, but if they are getting those prices then you appear to have bought at just the right time. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

I would take a S2000 every time over a 996. 996 worst 911 ever made speed is subjective. S2000 has a nicer interior looks better and handles better. I would only take a 997 and up 911 over s2000

The 996 has its IMS issue, the S2000 has its ignition and engine problems. Beyond that they're both extremely reliable. I guess if you're going to get a very low mileage model and keep it in a garage somewhere it's a toss up between these two. If you want a do it all daily driver sports car the 911 is a no-brainer. If you wanted an S2000 just get that. Personally, I picked the Boxster preferring it on the two lane twisty mountain roads near the Smoky mountains where I live over these two. Although my slightly slower Z3 is funner!
@OurRideLife
@OurRideLife 3 года назад
Very good points. Mainly it is drive what you enjoy driving and everyone is different, so one may be a better option for one person and another for someone else. Also, enjoy your Boxster and Z3 as often as you can. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

I sold my S2000 to buy a 996 C4S ( in the Netherlands the c4s is ca. 10k more expensive). The s2k has only 2 sests which for me was the main reason to move into the C4S. Honestly, I will not go back, the C4S gives me more of the “special” feeling compared to the s2k and the sound of the PSE is epic compared to the s2k exhaust. That being said, the s2k is like a kart on the road where the c4s is much more refined. No apples and apples in this comparison
@OurRideLife
@OurRideLife 3 года назад
I certainly agree with you. The only real reason for the comparison is that they are in the same price range, so some may cross shop the two based on the price. Sounds like you have a fun car with the 996 C4S and prices of those seem to be on the rise as well. Drive it as often as possible. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

I've had a s2k but I've never had a 911. At this point, you can get a 996 for roughly the same price of a s2k. As much as I loved my s2k, the Porsche is my next car. Pretty much a s2k but at least I can bring my family around with the back seat
@OurRideLife

The S2000 is a great car as is the 996. As you mentioned the back seat is a big plus for the 996. I often take all three of my children in the car and with my other option being the family minivan, I would much rather drive the Porsche. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

Good point. I think the biggest sports car part of the S2000 is the high revving engine. Of course with some suspension upgrades it can be a very capable package on the track (but then you can make some changes to the 996 Carrera to get very close to the handling of the 996 GT3). Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.

This really should be a topic of not the 911 against the S2000 but the Porsche Boxster versus the S2000 cuz those kind of similar but even with that the Porsche is more refined and sturdy and the S2000 is more of a beast on high revving
