As a fan of roadsters and sports cars, I had to check out a Porsche Boxster 981 for myself to see if it was any better than my BMW Z4. As I drove the Porsche, I took videos here and there so that you can see my genuine first impression of this Boxster and not a scripted video after doing research on the car and seeing what others think. I wanted to come in with a clean slate to see what the acceleration felt like, how did the car handle through tight corners and on regular roads. Was it comfortable and pleasant to drive? I tried to answer all those questions as well as give you some good scenery as I'm driving through some wavy roads. I also liked how this car had no rattles and felt very solid for a 5 year old car. Handling in this midengine car is of course outstanding and it has a lot more storage than you'd think.

Excuse the wind noise and some rambling, just wanted to share the car with you guys as I'm a fan! *Correction:* After driving the car for another day, I paid closer attention and what I thought was slow PDK, was actually lack of bottom end torque. The transmission actually shift almost instantly.

I've owned a 981 for 2 years now. And I swear to God I have the same excitement today as the day I bought it!! Its one of the best cars for the money and VERY reliable... Like Toyota reliable... Plus its fast as "Balls"

I've owned a z4 28i. an m140i, 2 jag f types,and I can honestly say the boxster 981 2.7 manual is head and shoulders above these cars. Absolute fun to drive and sounds like a proper sports car.And it is fast. I can get 70mph in 2nd gear and 105 mph on 3rd gear.It screams at you for punishment and the engine seems to enjoy it. 100% best car I've ever owned.

All day long better than a Z4 looks, handling, transmission, sound and even as a base, with the PDK it is more than plenty power to get you in trouble

I own a Z4 so I'm very used to driving it and I love the manual transmissions. It's also very nice balanced with the smaller engine. The Boxster, it handles even better and I wish I got to drive the manual to compare apples to apples. Both fun cars, would love to own a Boxster as well!

I have a base manual, and I actually prefer it to an S, as you can use more of the car through the rev range most of the time. The worst part, by far, is that 1st and reverse are about 1 mm apart and it's way too easy to push through the lockout. When I'm driving it regularly, it's not a big problem, but when not, when in doubt, I start off in 2nd at a stop light. It's that bad. Also, the electronic brake won't come off unless you put your seat belt on, which is a pain when I'm backing out of my very small garage with barn-style doors. Yes, always wear your seatbelts, but sometimes your just moving your car around or correcting your parking. An unnecessary nanny. Otherwise, the car is great. Drove it all around the country and through Canada and back. Had a woman friend with me part of the way, and we could carry pretty much as much luggage as we wanted; the luggage capacity cannot be understated. The sound insulation with the top down is amazing. Like you say, it won't mess up your girlfriend's hair, but you can also carry on a conversation at normal voice. It's like you're in a little bubble. There aren't too many reasonable mid-engine sports cars, so this was a no-brainer for me.

Thank you for your review! It's always great to hear from an owner. Like you said, can't think of a better value mid-engine car that a Porsche Boxster/Spyder.

Sorry.. I totally disagree. The "S" is much faster, and much better in every way. A 981 S, with PDK & Chrono is the world's greatest open top sports car.
@Jay-xr3sb
@Jay-xr3sb Год назад
@@EnglishSpitfire and your opinion is final? Most will say the S is better based on stats. For the road the base is fun to rev out and bot lose your licence. The S is better for the track. Drove a gts 4.0 recently, gearing and torque won't let you rev it out often on the road.

I have a 2014 with PDK. With PDK you have to turn sport mode on and be heavy on the accelerator to experience it.
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 3 года назад
I started to learn that towards the end of my time with the car. Definitely started to make a difference. It's like a small displacement/high revving cars. Until you rev the nuts off of it, you aren't getting the full experience.

Porsche’s are consistently underwhelming. If it’s not the top of the line trim, then if ends up just being very ordinary. Thanks for the honest and straightforward review. Subscribed.

I think the extremes are the best. A base 981 is fine for a weekender, the gt4 for track, the gts for the touring spec. Base os more fun on the road at legal speeds

The "squirrellyness" you mentioned is actually the Porsche Torque Vectoring feature. Its great for doing really fast turns, especially hair pins. Try it on a track someday and you'll love it!
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 3 года назад
I drove a 911 on a track a few years ago and that was VERY impressive. I'll have to arrange something with a Boxster to see how they feel when they are actually DRIVEN! I'll look into the torque vectoring feature to learn more, thanks.

I think they always had a much, much better reputation for handling and fun than the Z4 E89.. I haven't tried one myself.. Personally I would go for a late génération 6 cylinder Cayman.... But I think it will always be a much more expensive vehicle to run - less home maintenance possible .. A good, well maintained BMW straight 6 should be very reliable.... Too much red... Maybe on the seats but the red dashboard is far too much.. Would you change? I have a wind deflector on my Z4.. It is a 'must have' .. I drove all day at 80mph plus and it was never tiring. And have a great birthday... If you can have fun during all this crap then life is OK..
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 3 года назад
I can't say that it's more fun than the Z4, it's just a different kind of fun. It would definitely be a lot more expensive to run, just look at how it is designed, they don't want you to even look at the engine, never mind, working on it! So, I'd have to assume lots of specialized tools for any job. As far as the interior, I like it, but to be honest it is a bit obnoxious, the dash could definitely be a normal color while leaving the steering wheel and seats red. Would I change? If it was a 1 to 1 swap, yes. I would not pay $40k for one though. I just need to get a wind deflector on mine :). Thanks for the birthday wish, I can't complain about life while I'm happily employed and can take little trips like this.

I can't say about boxster but caymans are not bad to work on even with some jack stands. Cayman engine top and front part is accessible when you take out the panels from inside which isn't bad just time consuming. Porsche caymans are quite reliable (better than z4 I would assume).
