Changing the transmission fluid on a 981 GT4. This makes a difference in shifting. Items needed 3-4 Liters of Fluid Part # 000-043-305-49 10mm allen key socket Fluid pump to fill the transmission.
Just a tip, always loosen the fill plug before you drain the fluid. If for some reason the fill plug was stripped or wouldn’t come out, you’d be in a world of problems 😉 I have a GT4 as well and have made a couple videos. Good to see other DIY folks out there!
I did it around 9K miles on the car. Also its a 6spd manual transmission not a PDK. The fluid was 7 years old. I figured as might as well change it due to age.
What would be a good interval to replace the transmission fluid on any 718 Cayman/Boxter model, either manual or PDK? The owner's manual says to change it every 120k miles or 12 years but I think that is too long of an interval, especially if the car is being daily driven.
I would probably cut that in half If you do any sort of spirited driving or pushing the car a lot. Also if you do any upgrades to the power of the engine that would cause more wear on the fluid. I would go 6 years or 60K miles. You can never be to safe when it comes to clean fluid in an engine or transmission. I've never changed any of my cars oil according to the interval. I've had 0 issues with changing fluids early.
Does the Porsche gear oil come with the friction modifier for the limited slip diff? If so there must be two types of OEM fluid? With and without the FM?
The fluid was probably never changed. i bought the car with 4200 miles on it. My car never had the issue with the transmission. From all the talk about the trans issue you would think all the GT4's got it done. It was only a select group that needed the transmission replaced. I called Porsche when i was buying the car and it didn't qualify or need the transmission replaced.
I have a manual 16' GTS with the same gearbox. My 3rd gear failed and transmission was swapped at 32k Miles. I believe all of the original gearboxes are susceptible to the failure, it just depends on if you drive it hard enough. Redline Shifts from 2nd to 3rd are what will eventually break the spot welds on 3rd gear. But redline shifts from 2nd to 3rd should be rare on the streets ~80mph in my case.@@gtmachine6134
Correct. There is no filter with the manual, even though it does have a pump and a cooler. You would think that it could use a filter. But with no electronics inside there is no reason to filter the fluid as with the PDK's i guess. It does have a magnet on the drain plug that you can clean.
