You’re extremely generous to share a dram of this with anyone. At my house, the only person I’ve allowed a very small sip is my mom to introduce her to peated whisky. Anyone else touches it - RIP.

Glad you finally got around to reviewing this whiskey, I was fairly certain you were going to like it. When I compare this to Ardbeg, I would say Ardbeg is more like "one note" (and what a great note it is) whereas Port Charlotte is more of "a chord". Just much more nuanced flavors and more complexity IMO. I also get a bit of a pepper note on the finish (along with the chocolate). It's the best "entry level" peated whiskey (IMO) and more than holds it own against other heavyweights (Lagavulin/Talisker/Laphroaig). Cheers!

Just grabbed a bottle of this yesterday. Was my first Islay Whiskey I ever purchased. It truly is fantastic stuff! Based on many reviews it is not as intense as the other big 3 distilleries so made more sense to go in this direction first. I'm glad I did.

Love the Port Charlotte 10. Other than Corryvreckan and Uigeadail, which I still consider a step up, PC10 has all the other peated whiskies I've tried beat in my book. I prefer it over the Ardbeg, Laphroaig and Talisker 10 year olds, as well as the Lagavulin 16 and the An Oa. It has such a great balance of peat, complexity, and versatility that it just kind of supplants my need for all the other peated whiskies. EDIT: Also wanted to add your nose and tasting notes matched mine pretty well, just that I get orange peel instead of lemon.

I had samples of this from a Flaviar event. If you can get the OLC:01 it was a game changer. So good. A wow moment for me. The regular PC10 and PC Islay Barley was great too. But OLC:01 is a step above for me.

I would recommend this one to Speyside scotch fans who think they dislike peated scotches. It's the one that opened the door for me, to peated offerings (as opposed to Lagavulin and Laphroigh). Yeah, I know - I spelled those wrong.

Tried Laphroaig 10 yesterday for my first peated whisky from a deal in Trader Joe’s, kind of afraid since it’s said to be harsh comparing to ardbeg. It turns out pretty tasty and really like it. I find iodine smoky flavor attractive, it could be similar to the fact I like cough syrup taste :) The peated smoke also covers alcohol burn very well. And the sweet aftertaste is really interesting

This is my favorite core range peated Islay. Quite a bit different from others like Laphroaig or Ardbeg that use Islay peated barley from Port Ellen. Port Charlotte uses Highland peated barley from Inverness so it does not have that seaweed iodine note you get with the others I mentioned.
@jackthepickledhound
@jackthepickledhound 3 года назад
I did not connect all the dots. I have been enjoying an older PC Scottish Barley slightly more than the new Islay Barley. I thought they had a malting floor and kiln with local peat. Even with the way everyone raves about the PC10, I'm leaving my bottle sealed a bit longer. Going back to Ardbeg10 is like coming home to your dirty house after staying at a nice clean Port Charlotte Hotel.

LOL on the "thank you for making me sniff linseed oil"! This one sounds great... but then again, Bruichladdich is generally awesome stuff. I was lucky enough to get some of the Laddie 10 (2nd ediition) before it sold out, but the Classic Laddie is pretty close and I usually keep a [portion of a] bottle on hand at all times. I can actually get this Port Charlotte here in BC and I love Islay peat in general, so will have to check this one out!

Totally agree, PC10 is a fantastic whisky. A close second to Ardbeg for me in terms of peaty Islay whiskies. Also, was it just me or was the sound a little quieter in this video? Maybe I've finally lost my mind.

For me PC 10 feels like more intense Laphroaig 10 with the similar in your face dry peat. Ardbeg has it's signature spice to it, so it's hard to find any analogy. I can't wait to find Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength and get my hands on PC MC:01 2009 also cask strength to level up.

The port charlotte 10y I really have it since today. And I'm having a dram now. I'm very happy. So now I have Lagavulin 8y, Laphroaig 10y batch 14 cask strength, 2 bottles off ardbeg 10 and then the port charlotte10 heavily peated. I had the ardbeg 5 wee beastie too but it's finished together with the lagavulon 16. So yeah I need the lagavulin 16 and another Islay don't know which one yet I will buy. Any suggestions? And yes I allready had the Ardbeg uigeadail and corryvreckan and caol ila 12y too. But that was a long time ago. I think I will buy next time the Lagavulin 16 again and the Caol ila 12y because I almost forgot what it tastes like.

if you like peated whisky I think you'll find the peat to be more subtle than a lot of others. I find a lot of Ardbeg's to be more on the earthier side like you said burned dirt, which I don't mind tbh. I think it'd be a mistake to pass up a glass of PC10, at least try it in a bar or friends house or something if you're hesitant to buy a bottle. Just my 2 cents
