This looks like many larger “small” Midwest lakeside towns that are showing their age a bit but still clearly have residents who care about maintaining their properties.
I was born and raised there. Being a mixed hispanic, and growing up in the "Gardens", I never really saw anything or heard of anyone being treated differently over their race. But, it was the 70's and 80's. Long before everyone got super sensitive. Skin color had no bearing on anyone's opinion. At least at that time, in that place. There was a strong sense of community there. Friends helping friends. If you are leaving the south to go there, I would urge you to do so. I moved to NC at 35, and the divide here is more defined than anything I have ever seen. Port Clinton no longer has a thriving industry, as it once had, but it's a great place to live.
