Port Germein is a small country seaside town that is located on the eastern side of Spencer Gulf in South Australia. It is approximately one and a half hours drive north of Adelaide. It once boasted as having the longest jetty in the Southern Hemisphere until many wild storms reduced the length due to damaged sustained during storms. While we are at Port Germein we venture off to Weeroona Island to have a look around before returning to Port Germein to look at the local markets being held there on the Sunday afternoon.

I have been past there so many times but have never stopped to enjoy Pt Germein. That will be changing next time I am up that way
@justcruisinwithmicksally837
Great stuff, nothing special there but is it a place that hasn't been spoilt in any way.

I loved that red sunset, so beautiful. I do hope the government fix the jetty, it would be sad to see it vanish over time. I remembered learning about it being the longest when I was at school in the 1950s when we were taught Australian geography & history & facts & figures before the education system was changed to omit learning about our country. I would love to see the high tide when it is in as against the low tide. The whole place looked so clean, neat & tidy. I have noticed that in many of your videos, sadly our east coast doesn't look so good.
@justcruisinwithmicksally837
The red sunset looked great, just love a good sunset. Unfortunately the real high tide was at around 3am in the morning while the low tide was during the daylight hours.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane Mick. Spent many childhood Sundays at the beach there with family and friends. As we lived on the eastern side of the southern Flinders Ranges, we travelled through Port Germein Gorge from the small country towns in the area.
@justcruisinwithmicksally837
Great stuff, you probably would know Orroroo. Sally and out two boys were born there.

Love that jetty! Needs investment. Reminds me of holidays spent at Elliston caravan park, fishing 🎣🦦 off the jetty! ❤️ Thanks for your photography.
@justcruisinwithmicksally837
Yes the jetty need some government financial help that is for sure.

The real high tide unfortunately was during the early hours of the morning, perhaps next time.

What a great spot, we’ll be down there in November on our way to Busselton, we’re keen to run up that jetty and back. I originally came for your road train vids and happily stayed with your other vids mate. I’m an Adelaide boy and it great to see all parts of SA via your vids. We’re actually also down in Adelaide in March for the Victor Harbour triathlon, who know we might cross paths one day, we love free camping on the Murray, particularly Walker Flat.
@justcruisinwithmicksally837
Cheers, have a good time when you are here. Keep an eye open for us, you never know we may cross paths.

Good video Mick, the camp kitchen was good I thought has everything you needed and doesn’t have to be really flashy I like the rough country type ones like that.
@justcruisinwithmicksally837
Sounds like you are pretty much like us.

We moved to Baroota Res in Sept 1965 so know the area quite well ! Ended up buying a small old cottage just out of Pt Germein ( opposite the Gorge Rd turn off ) & only moved to Port Pirie in July 1996 A lot of "water under the bridge " between 1965 & 1996 but enjoyed the years with all our ups & downs . Love that area but don't get out there very often these days
@justcruisinwithmicksally837
It really is an area that hasn't been spoilt in any way, either you love it or not interested.

It's good fishing at high tide especially for garfish and squid

In our younger days while living at Orroroo we used to go over to the jetty and fish, was great fun.👍

Thanks for the look around an area I have not been to, I would suspect that it would be a high salt content in the soil that causes the brown out of the grass on the Island
@justcruisinwithmicksally837
I have the same thoughts with regards to the soil salt content, pity as it would look so much better with more grass.

@justcruisinwithmicksally837

An entire forest of old growth timber must have been felled for the 1930's building of this jetty .. there had been considerable local opposition to the construction in that deep water wharves suitable for the loading of agricultural produce existed at Port Augusta about 30 miles north, and at Port Pirie 20 miles to the south .. nowhere has the plunder of native resources been more apparent than in the making of this behemoth .. I went to PG where my aboriginal grandfather was from at age 10 yrs in 1961, to see these thousands of trees sacrificed for a useless construction project freaked me out then .. it still does.

Hi Mick and Sally, another great trip. Love this pier, had several walks along it over the years. Hows the water going in the Murray, down to the mouth yet? Cheers Cheryl 🙂
@justcruisinwithmicksally837
The water is expected to reach the lakes and the mouth around the 7th to 13th of January. Should be good to see. We are off to Meningie next weekend for a few days to look around, should be good to see.
