I decided I wanted to 100% this game a decade after I first play it. I'm already regretting every single one of my life choices.

3 and 1/2 hours later and my cube still wont make it to the button in chamber 13

There’s an easier way to do chamber 17. Use your two portal to get into the Rattman’s chamber and take out all of the security cameras. Use those cameras to create a platform by the ledge. Place your companion cube on top of the cameras and climb up to the ledge. Then crouch down and pick up your companion cube so you can burn it at the end of the test.

on chamber 17 i have 0 portals if you consider the "i can bounce on an object and quickly pick it up again" bug

For #13's throw - If you have the cube in your hand pointed down and then move your mouse up and let go, it will have an arc so it gets higher. Couple that with moving forward and that should do it for you. Always remember to make a check point so that you can try over and over again without having to do everything else all over again.

After many attempts I finally got the jump in chamber 17. Here are some tips for those of you who are still stuck: 1. You have to position yourself right at the edge or you won't make it. 2. A good place to practice the jump is at the portals when you're coming back up to the platforms in the room with the stairs. Try to do a side jump there (holding forward and right as you jump) as you pass through the portal and land as close to the far right corner as possible. It will use the same principles as the jump you're trying to make. 3. You have to jump forward and to the right. Don't keep holding W and D for the whole jump though, and after the pan of the camera to the right only press forward, or W. Try to time this together with the pan of the camera, meaning almost immediately after jumping. So it's jump (forward + right) - camera pan (to the right) - falling at maximum speed straight towards the ledge (holding forward only) - land (crouch). This is important because you can control the movement of a jump only for a moment, and after you reach a certain falling speed it locks you into that falling direction. 4. Time your jump with a right pan of the camera, which should be smooth and should look like it does in the video, timed almost simultaneously with your jump. This goes in hand with tip 3. Therefore, you want this speed to be used in moving towards the ledge, which is why the camera pan is very important to get right. 5. Be patient. You will fall and fail many times. I must have attempted it around 80 or 90 times and of those times I got it twice. Once without the cube, and then when I first did it without the cube, I started practicing with the cube, which makes it just the slightest bit more complicated. You'll get there eventually. 6. Don't forget that it's a crouch jump, so you need to crouch right at the very end of the jump as you touch the ledge, otherwise you'll lose momentum and not make the jump. Good luck

For anyone who has trouble on chamber 17: you can also place one portal where can reach it on the bottom floor where those lifts are, then one in the rattman den. Use the 4 cameras inside to make a staircase/pedestal to place your cube on. Jump on one of the cameras, then the cube, then on top, crouch, and snag your cube! Boom.

Getting even fewer than you need on 18 by having something prop open the doors?! That is amazing. Wonder if they thought anyone would do that? 😯

You can also solve Chamber 17 with 2 portals by placing the first portal at the end of the first corridor instead of the second. After completing the double door puzzle another pellet will come out of the launcher there. Then you have to angle the companion cube and crouch right into the corner to the left of the door across the last catcher and redirect it upwards into it. Its pretty easy to do aswell, only took me about 3 tries after I figured it out. Of course there is also stacking props or glitching but I thought this solution was also pretty neat.

I'm stuck on chamber 13. I can't throw the block onto the platform. I either miss or fall off

For anyone wondering I found an easy and semi-repeatable cheese for the chamber 17 jump at 5:35 ish. I use the cube and while crouched midair I slam the cube into the wall to kind of wrap me around the corner. Works every 5 or so jumps, use quick load to keep at it!

For chamber 15. There is a portal trick, during the portal crouch in and out over waste water. You can strafe jump in and out of the portal while placing another portal down the other corner. This is for people that can't line up themselves, so when they place a new portal they get bumped out. If you are accurate enough then you can even place a portal next to the lift out, allowing you to use only 14 portals.

I hope whoever at Valve decided #17's jump was something fun steps on the sharpest Lego imaginable

I have been stuck on throwing the cube onto the button in chamber 13 for 2 and a half hours straight. I am about to uninstall the game and give up on my hopes and dreams

For all of the people struggling with the jump in test chamber 17, the easiest method to get up there is to use the console command "ch_createairboat". This is a debug command from Half-Life 2 that spawns an airboat in case the one the player was given was lost or bugged, and you do not need to enable cheats to use the command. I recommend binding it to a key, preferably a scroll wheel (to bind, go to console and type, "bind ch_createairboat"). You can then easily spawn an airboat and drive it into the right position so you can use it as stairs. Hope this helps!

I feel almost guilty for using guides but what fo i fo, my brain isn't that big.

Man 1:55 just feels like an outright exploit more than what I was meant to do. Out of everything I've had to look up for solutions, I don't feel bad searching this up.

In Chamber 16, you can complete it by "portal bumping" into the end room. He/she uses this method in the Least Steps video, but you only need to place a portal on the ground, unlike the video. I found that the jump was really difficult to make while holding the companion cube, so I thought I would give anyone who needs a second method of success.

Thanks for the video it helped a lot (btw if you wanna to go big for some odd reason chamber 17 you can do 0 portal just have to jump with the box on bottom)

to those who are having trouble making the jump in chamber 17 there is an easier solution, after getting past the energy pellet hallway you can see the end of the level through a glass wall. There are portalable surfaces on the floor on both sides of the glass wall. You can use that to portal bump into that room skipping the jump all together

I had the exact same strategy for 13 but I couldnt throw the cube on the button

I'm still having a hard time with 13, because no matter what I do I can't give the cube momentum to throw it on the button.

for chamber 17 it really helps to b-hop from the first platform and land on the 2nd platform with the momentum (extra speed) the jumps get easier

For Chamber 17. you don't even need to use a single portal, at the wall thats blocking you I just spammed grab the block and jumped which gives you momentum if you just spam and you go up in the air little by little. I don't know if this makes sense but just spam grab with the block below you in a corner and you should levitate little by little and you just need to make sure you grab the block and drag it over when your high enough

not doing portal bumps for chamber 17 is actually impressive

If someone like me can't make the last jump at level 17, you can put two portals for the cameras to fall and finally put an upright camera and the cube on top of it (because if the cube is at the bottom you won't be able to get it later), you go up and you take the cube, I hope I helped someone

This achievement just isnt worth it not only that this is the turning point in my life where I no longer give a crap about achievements thanks portal

I guess it's easy to realize but I still haven't read any comment about how you should save after each milestone so that you can load and continue from there if you make a mistake.

the jump @ 5:33 can be skipped if u stack cameras against the wall and make stairs with them

Warning to anyone attempting #13. It is a *LOT* harder than it looks. On my 134th attempt and still havent done it lol

Watching this makes me realize that Valve are psychopaths for making some of these challenges. Who would ever think to try half this shit for getting gold

at the first chamber, it's possible to get fewer portals by prop-climbing, and you can also get the first cube without making portals, but it's very time-consuming to reach it.

i got gold medal on 17 without knowing this jump. i remember i was stacking the cameras found inside the wall into an ugly staircase i managed to get over. still did it in only 2 portals

Chamber 17 was bested by cube jumping, and then portalling the cube next to the final switch.

I did the companion cube chamber completely differently but still got 2 portals In What I did was portal Into the rattman den to pick up 2 cameras, stack them on top one another and put the cube on them at the end of the chamber, climbed up, crouched down to get the cube and then finished the chamber

ok another method for chamber 17, it uses 0 portals but it is kinda a glitch you have to get the cube an go to the wall were leads to the ending, place the cube in the corner, look straight down in the corridor direction, then spam E and Spacebar, you will constantly jump in the cube and grab it again, you need to do it until the cube gets higher than the wall, then it will automatically go in front and you just need to walk so you can get on it, is kinda hard explaining on text but i guess that's it, any doubts comment :)

I made the 17 by 0lacing the portals to get the broken cameras and made 2 stacks of 2 cameras on the part where the exit is, placed the cube on top of one of the stacks, jumped on the little stack, then on top of the cube, got up to the exit and picked the cube by crouching and left with the cube to euthanize it

for some reason, the interface in the chamber 16 challenge keeps telling me i cheated, even thought i did everything properly and the console command screen thing wasn't open

Chamber 17, people saying use your 2 portals to get the cameras in ratmans den are 200% correct. 2 hours and nunerous failed jumps, I got the cameras stacked and the cube on top and hopped the ledge in less than 2 minutes. Its finnicky but holy shit is it much easier.

I used the exact same method for chamber 14 but it says "cheated" every time. What's up with that?
