You have to be absolutely the Best my G. Never heard it explained like this. I took carpentry in high school just too make boxes for Suzuki Samurai jeeps & Broncos.. you make me wanna get back into the Craft. Peace 73X
Cerwin Vega has a ton of horn designs online. They made a bunch for movie theatres while pioneering subwoofers for the first time. They did this for the movie earthquake in the 70s. The theatres back then didn't have subwoofers and Cerwin Vega made thousands of subwoofers with boxes and delivered with those Earthquake films.
Lol this is the exact video you asking for. And 64 likes lmao. He's even telling you how to tune the horn VS schematics of subwoofer sd. I can't believe this comment 😂😂
I can't get over your boxes. Dude you have a real talent for this and being so preticulur about how and what your boxes look and sound like, says a lot about you. I want one of your boxes so bad. Please please make blueprints I would love to build one.
You explained both enclosures not only accurately, but simply and concisely. (Moreso than anyone else I've heard) There's so much bad info, inflated specs and misinformed people in car audio, that hearing someone knowledgeable discourse on the subject is refreshing. Nice craftsmanship too, btw.
Glad I watch this brother in 2021, you have definitively directed me to what design is best for my application.. thanks for your time and imparting your knowledge.
First off this is the best channel yet about enclosures I've encountered and delivery of ideas. 💯 Good. I just bought three 12-in stereo integrity SQL 12 s and I'm going with a horn loaded front firing sealed off from trunk enclosure that faces the 3 12s like this if you were looking at them overhead \_/. The chamber they're firing into is MDF on top and bottom of these three enclosures, reinforced. Each sealed in .8 cubic feet for a QTC that's tight and accurate. I was going to go with a front firing sealed off from trunk ported enclosure, with the aero ports ran up through the rear deck loading onto the glass. However,I've always preferred that thump and projection ability with accuracy that the horn produces.
you do great work been building boxes for 30 years was 17 when i started alot of people dont understand how the right box makes all the difference keep up the good work
The man is pure genius, master of his craft and he has the ability to the complex and make it simple to the point anyone can understand clearly. Keep up the good work and I will be contacting you for my truck box.
You explained this so well, I can tell you know a lot because you dumbed it down and it actually made sense! Most people seem like they are proving they are experts rather than teaching the target audience at the audience's level. Those boxes look great too.... nice smooth corners
I have a 4.7 cube box with 100 sq. inches of port area for a single 12". It was an experiment and worked quite well. Thanks for the explanation. I am planning on a box experiment using the principles of a "loading wall" and kind of a horn too for a more venue/stage show oriented subwoofer box.
Thanks man. I learned a lot today and opened my mind to bigger and better builds. I love sq that still can do 50s and 60s on the meter. I want to try doing a horn with the new solo x pro kicker l7x 15" or even 18 if they ever get them out and build a folded horn enclosure in the back of a jeep. Loud, efficient and clean!.
I would love to see what this looks like on the inside. I've tried for a few days now to see a similar build to this with no luck. Would really appreciate if you could make more videos on this
This is really really nice damn bruh so detailed! I always thought the horn was predominantly used for large open spaces, I’ve never seen one mounted in any type of car. Seems like it’s way better and efficient than the ported.
this man knows his design criteria, If you build with Baltic Birch (yes more expensive ply) they will not need as much bracing and you will find you can use thinner ply with the same cabinet stiffness. Charge more for a better product. Your explanation is spot on and the language is suitable for most lay people who don't build speakers from scratch. :) Excellent video and boxes. Nice double baffle on the 8" box good job.
WOW. Thanks for explaining this in simpleterms. Now I know what to do with my ford ranger early 90s!! Going to build around my TERAMPS 3000 HD 1 OHM. These amps are more than a beast. crazy power in a perfect small space. I think I go 2 12 inch sundowns or 4 8s on one side so I still can maintain a seat in the back and storage room. Thanks again for the explanation MB. B E A Utiful
Often double 18s nowadays because you can pack more in a lorry. If you need to drive 2 lorries to get the same output from horn subwoofers, then any efficiency gains are negated by the inefficiencies of 2 trucks vs one. If the venue has a low power supply and the subwoofers can be permanently installed, then you get more out of the horns, and spend less on drivers, though more on cabinet woodwork. Double 18s are good at concentrating bass for space, though Danley Tapped horns are probably doing even better nowadays. I've also found 6th order can gain quite a bit in the upper passband for only being 50% larger than a vented box, and that's without increasing the amp power. I did my birthday party in a village hall and had substantial output from 2 12" subwoofers on 600 watts though only turned up about "40% loudness" which actually gives not 240 watts but just 30, for you need disproportionately more power to get slightly louder, psychologically speaking. By placing them both side by side and facing into a corner at close proximity - far more than I would have had placing one in front of each mid/high stand on the same amplifier. The rig fitted in a Citroen C2 and slammed and got pretty low too.
So a horn port for 2/8 will make it sound like a pair of 12s a single 12 a single 15 what would you rate it as soundwise instead of a regular port ? Curious because I have four American Bass vfl 8's and I'm wondering if it'll sound louder or just as loud as 2 15's in a horn box versus a normal ported box
Whats up MB! So what about these different order enclosure? Like when they say 4th order or 5th order? Can you give some insight on these type of enclosures? Man I remember when I first subscribed you only had 100 some subscribers and now look at you! I'm proud to have watched you on your journey and thank you again for helping me! Much love !
It would be nice to see a graph comparing the two. I use WINISD a lot but I don't recall it having an option for horn loaded woofers. I dont know of any that does? so what is the best type of speaker for a horn loaded woofer? would it be one that also works for an open baffle?
Can I use my pair of sundown x15 for a horn enclosure if so how big would the box be. Putting it in a Chevy express conversation van I have already remove third row seat
If the ported enclosure gets higher meter results, at what point would a ported pass the horn enclosure in spl? Can you still feed a sub max rms wattage in a horn?
Thank you for the video. Question: for HF Mid/Sub Bassbox; 80-250,300 hertz range. Your thoughts on enclosure design in my van. All sizes and shapes welcomed from your experience to hit those frequencies best.
Horn vs 6th order for 8s. I have a dual slot and a 6th order built already. Curious if a horn enclosure would benefit me. Same environment. Same power. 2005 Chevy Trailblazer. Audiopipe Apmi2k.
GREAT information in your video. Your wood working skills seem at par to your knowledge of horn loading. You gained a subscriber. I agree with you on 8's! I'm yet to try 6's though. Your thoughts horn loading?
Is it possible to do a horn enclosure with 6.5 ct sounds meso and is a horn enclosure good truck builds since there isn't much area for the sound to bounce off of?
Would two sundown x8 v3 perform better in horn or bass reflex which box would be bigger ? Can these speakers work in both enclosures pros and cons if either
So for an Audio Legion 1600.1 mono amp running a 12" dual 2ohm Audio Legion Maximus wired to 1ohm... should I go ported or horn? Also what tuning would you recommend? Im just sitting on them until I have funds for build.
Ok question though.. because of the lack of back pressure doesn’t it limit the power handling of the sub? In a simplistic form it’s more like a free air in these terms. I’ve never messed around with horns but it would seem to me that you would want the resonance wall as close to the back of the speakers as possible wo loosing cooling so that you can maintain responsiveness of said speaker on kick drum bass as well adding whatever momentary back pressure you can to keep the speaker from bottoming out.. I’m I correct in this thinking?
No, subs won't act like a free air in a folded horn design. A good way to describe it is a ported box where the ports long and narrows the closer to the woofer it gets. One of the biggest concepts in a folded horn design is that as the air get closer to the speaker in the port. The port size reduces increasing the air velocity, this increase in airspeed and is what makes the speaker efficiency increase. Just like a ported box, folded horns are usually tuned to the subs FS. But they will give you a frequency response more like a sealed box, but louder and more efficient. A good example of a horn design with little input and lots of output is the Tuba.
BudgetBassHead did a video that displayed a 5th order enclosure. You made a very useful point about ported boxes controlling woofer excursion using tuning. Would you consider it reasonable to use the port cross section to make a horn based on the port instead of the driver?
