If so how is Philly, PA or Vancouver, Canada where I believe they decriminalize drug use as well. @@daCubanaqt- the number of voters in Portland out vote the majority of the state due to its population size. If you look at a close-up voting map, the majority of Oregon is red ... not blue. Hence the comment. While local politicians may be Republican, they are from less populated areas & don't have as many votes for state house/senate & governor.

It's no wonder Eastern OR and WA have been trying to break away from the Westside and join a more conservative state. Cities like Portland and Seattle dictate policy for the whole state. One example in WA. The voters repealed the license tab increase and voted to return it to a $35 fee, it passed by a super majority, Seattle sued the rest of the State, because they need the tax dollars to support the cities public transit. Go figure, a liberal judge overturned the will of the people because "the voters just didn't understand the impact on Seattle. That shouldn't even be possible, but it happened. Thanks, Jay "Jadolf" Inslee and "Sideshow" Bob Ferguson, your desire to mimic a failed city like San Fran is working flawlessly.

Why drugs are expensive? Because they are illegal. If heroine would still be sold in store like 100 years ago, it would be at the same price as aspirin. And since it would be produced on regulated factories, it would be high quality, so no random overdoses (because you know exactly how much of the stuff you are getting) and massively less side effects (majority of danger from drugs comes from poor quality what you can get on streets). Alcohol is actually one of the hardest drugs you can get, but it is legal.

@@susancohen8009 oregon offers free insurance that covers drug treatment. The real solution to this would be to criminalize drugs again and either offer rehab as an option OR just add rehab into the jails. Many jails offer medications so they’re not in withdrawal and have counseling for addicts

@@javiervigil2511IMO regardless of if Trump did it for political reason or not, the whole verdict does very little, fails to prove anything we don’t already know, and gives Trump an excuse to claim it was only ruled that way due to a long-term smear campaign and was done in a state with very little political affinity for him. In the coming decades, the trial will go through the reasonable doubt treatment and only think it was pushed because his political opponents wanted to disqualify him.

Most would think Minnesota is like southern Canada when really most people i knew were actually legitimately rednecks. I currently live in Oklahoma. As a resident of downtown Portland, Oregon I am so glad Schmidt was fired. In the last 3 months or so Portland has gotten such better. Now with a DA who understands his job is to maintain order by applying the law things should continue to improve in our city. Seattle, San Francisco and other west coast cities haven't caught up but Portland is a pretty great city to live in again. Of course now we're probably going to see a ton of rich transplants from the still failing cities on the west coast but we can cross that bridge...

Portland isn't coming back. In Multnomah County, where Schmidt is the DA, there are 558,877 registered voters. Only 144,603 voted, and out of those, 78,573 voted for new DA Vasquez. The other 66,030 wanted to keep this disaster rolling!

I have not seen a single shoplifting in my entire life here in Finland. I haven't seen any sort of drugs either. I've seen plenty of people who have ruined their life with alcohol and even ended it, including some of my relatives.

Same in my country. The funny thing is that even though our systems are way more progressive and aimed towards rehabilitation. It's still way stricter than the US on a lot of issues. Having a DA try and change the system is never going to work, when the framework needed for it to work isn't there.

It sucks that people throw away their lives with what some consider small crimes but without punishment it only emboldens the offenders. We think we live in a civilized society and that we wouldn’t do onto others that we wouldn’t do onto ourselves but those days are over and light on crime policies only help exaggerate these problems.

I’m a Portland native. Lived there for 40 years. Always a beautifully situated city, as recently as the early 2000s, it was also the safest major city for crime in the US. The descent has been dramatic and very much attributable to the policies of leftist politicians. It was so bad, it scared me straight out of the Democratic Party. The scariest thing, though, in addition to people simply being unsafe, is the way the media misreported so much the last few years. They spent more time blaming proud Boys and white supremacists (!) for sh*t that was clearly being perpetrated by antifa, drug addicts and progressive politicians. Blame needs to be correctively applied so these folks can’t do this again.

On both ends it was politically motivated because the man's a controversial figure who ran on it. He wanted the vote of one faction at the expense of the other and it came back to bite him. How liberally you can twist the law to your end or favor is freedom to me.
