🚴‍♂️🔌 Dive into the world of folding eBikes with our in-depth review of the RIDE1UP PORTOLA, hailed as an incredible value for under $1000. As the owner of Great Lakes eBikes based in Owosso, MI, and an eBike expert, I take you through every aspect of this game-changing ride. From unboxing to hitting the hills, we cover it all.
First, we start with a short introduction to the PORTOLA, emphasizing its standout feature as a budget-friendly folding eBike without compromising on quality. Next, I guide you through the installation process, showing how effortlessly it can be assembled straight out of the box, making it ready for the road in no time.
Following the setup, we delve into a detailed parts review, examining the brakes, motor, battery, display, tires, derailleur, suspension, and electrical system. I'll share my expert insights on which components shine and which ones might fall a bit short in terms of quality.
The hill test segment takes the PORTOLA to a challenging local road, assessing its capability to conquer everyday hills with a long and gradual incline. We don’t stop there; a flat ground acceleration test reveals the eBike’s max speed, pushing the PORTOLA to its limits.
Concluding the video, I provide an 8-minute detailed analysis on who this bike is best suited for, laying out the pros and cons compared to competitors, particularly the Lectric XP 3.0. While similar on paper, the PORTOLA stands out with its sleeker design, bigger motor, and superior build quality.

Would like to share my riding comparison between Velotric Fold 1 and one of its cheaper major competitors like Ride1Up Portola. Both ebikes I purchased very recently and pedal them about 80 mi each before providing w/ this info. Once I switched Velotric F1 to class 3 e-bike (allowing 28mph when pedal-assisting) most importantly than the max speed is actually how the torque power changed successfully for every PAS level. What happened is described very briefly - every one PAS level even otherwise the not noticeable PAS 1 or 2 increased its power when pedaling, and became so noticeable that I was able to pedal variety of terrains, including very short but steep uphills only using Velotric F1 PAS 1, incomparable advantage over Portola. Later even switched to Class 3 from Class 2 e-bike operation is forcing me going up steep hills especially to switch to PAS4 or 5 in order pedaling to get over the hill without much effort. The same observation is valid comparing Velotric F1 with other cheaper competitors like Aipas A2 and Lectruc XP 3.0 step-thru e-bikes. Being able to pedal practically everywhere without the need to switch to higher more-battery consuming PAS level or throttle - the outcome pedaling and saving more battery from discharge longer than Portola, Aipas A2 and Lectric XP step-thru.

Hi Larry, thanks for this nice review! I saw a review that talked about the little strap. When the bike folds, the strap can wrap around the fork, then when you button it again, it keeps the bike securely folded together so you can load, unload it, or set it somewhere and it stays close and compact. Seems it’s a little short, but maybe it will stretch out. I suppose one could use some kind of belt or strong Velcro strap to do the job as well. Thanks again for the nice review!

Is it small for a 5,10 guy , I’m stuck between this one & the velotronic t

I don’t think it’s too small, you can raise the seat up. Especially if you’re using the throttle more than riding it should be no issue. Pedal assist on shorter rides should be great but long rides pedaling you might be a little uncomfortable

They quoted me $375 for another battery larger size.

Easier build than a Letric 3.0....I think not. Just put 2k in miles on my 3.0 and have no complaints. Really all these types of ebikes look the same. YET...what happens when you have a problem? Most of these new bikes are based/sold from over seas. What if something goes wrong? Lectric is based in Arizona. Lectric also offers a one year warranty..no questions asked on replacement of ANY part on the bike. Superb customer service. I guess if I owned a bike shop this is something I wouldn't worry about. Sad, if they are all pretty much designed the same...why dd my 3.0 only cost 999. After crashing mine last year, good customer service offered to replace any parts damaged. In the end..it doesn't matter what bike as long as you can ride. Not being able to walk...nothing like jumping on the ebike. Have a great day!

Sorry. Only the 10th person to say: Strap for keeping the bike folded. Can you review your helmet? Oh... nevermind. Thanks for the review.

It always pisses me off when people bash the compotition. If you have a good product fine sell your product but dont bash the compotition. People will decide what one they want to buy. Low character bashes the other guy.

@@larryl pointing out advantages and disadvantages compared to others is hardly “bashing”. Matter of fact that’s EXACTLY what I’m looking for. Good review.
