Arcade: High Quality Portraits that were impressive at the time. 360/PS3: Neat Reimaginings of the OG portraits. Switch: Taking the OG portraits and giving them a nice and clean polish.
Pretty much what each are. I like that UDON put a unique take on these portraits in the HD version (I played it on PSNow) and the Switch/Ultra version is nice too and pretty much less pixelated versions of the arcade versions. Though, I'm a fan of these pixel arts and even early 3D like the ones on the PS1, N64 and even Star Fox SNES and 32X and Atari Jaguar games.
I loved the HD remake and appreciate UDON's take on the portraits but man the Switch portraits are gorgeous. They really highlight how great in design the original Arcade portraits were and enhanced them to their full potential. Very well done.
I always thought the HD Remix graphics was a downgrade. Sure it's HD, but the character design is hideous, with those small eyes, flat noses and off colors. Thank God they changed it back for the Switch version, now they look perfect!
@@thatoneflygon8291 After looking at it again I kinda agree, but it's like he's the one character that was already designed with small eyes and a flat nose so it fits, the problem is all the other characters that now look like T.Hawk in a wig, especially Ryu and Guile. I mean it looks like the artist has a serious limitation in the way he draws faces. To be fair though I also think the HD design fits Dhalsim very well, and I like Balrog's darker skin tone better, it looks more natural then the yellowish color of the original/Switch version. Also I think Akuma's portrait in the HD version is the best but I believe they changed his place in the select screen in the Switch version so maybe the fully colored one fits better in that context, idk.
I think Bison's hat in the 360/PS3 art is melting. The bill of the hat looks like it's been bent so much that one might think there's nothing supporting it.
I like how the Switch's portraits were touched up a bit to match to most of their updated looks/models from recent games. UDON's portraits are okay. The classics. Can never forget those faces, man. Get hit with the nostalgia for many of us that started with SFII.
@@lazrpo i just realized the hd remix portraits were made by udon🤦♂️ my bad, i was thinking about the new comics because they look good but yeah the sf2 ones are shit XD
I never got used to the design of HD Remix. It's super unappealing in my eyes. I'd rather they added some more frames to the old sprites. Hell some fans have already put in the effort and did so for some characters
You can tell that the portraits in Ultra are meant to be cleaner thanks to some adjustments from pixels and going to HD. Though with Akuma, they went another few yards and had him unshaded.
I like the arcade version best overall. There is a certain roughness to it that appeals to me. The switch version keeps the 16 bit look, but is too smooth. PS3 version is nice, but is obviously not trying to stay with 16 bit look, It's more like an homage to it than a faithful recreation.
@@verdantmischief7092 Exclusives are the most anti consumer thing in the market. And the fact your saying there good disappoints me and makes me thinks cooperations really do control too much.
CZ PC Are you dumb? Exclusives are ways for the companies to try to make good games in order to sell their consoles. Competition forces them to, and you're saying that we're in control?
HD Remix Balrog (the boxer) is superior. That's about it, though. Ultra Akuma portrait looks amazing. The Ultra portraits do a great job of recreating the original arcade portraits. But ultimately, nothing says quality craftsmanship like the rock-solid, old-fashioned pixel work of the original.
Yeah Balrog is the only one that actually looks good in the HD remix version even if it's not faithful to the original (I'd give an honorable mention to Sagat).
you should all keep this in mind: in both the ps3/x360 and switch version you can switch back and forth between the two artstyles, in both you have the option to play with the UDON comics style and the classic style
My picks of favorite renderings (mainly between Arcade and Switch, with a surprise): Ryu - Switch - his eyes looks better and not as stretched. Ears look better too Honda - Switch - more detailed Blanka - Arcade - Switch softened him a bit too much. I like the detail of his hand in the Arcade too Guile - Arcade - looks like a hardened colonel. Switch version looks too young Ken - Switch - really, it's a tie between Arcade and Switch Chun Li - Switch - a bit more vivid than Arcade Zangief - Switch - he looks more pissed off and it works better for him. I like his HD Remix rendering too Dhalsim - Arcade - I feel like his calm expression works better for him T Hawk - Arcade - see Ken Fei Long - Arcade - he looks more hardened. Nothing wrong with being a fresh faced competitor though Cammy - Switch - her eyes shine brighter Balrog - HD Remix - looks way more like Mike Tyson. So does the rendering from the original SF2 (before The New Challengers). Maybe he point was to stray away from Tyson though..IDK Sagat - Arcade - looks most intimidating than Bison - Arcade - see Sagat Akuma - I couldn't really decide.
19HajimeSaitou91 oh yes arcade is absolute original no joke they wins automatic the reason i put switch & arcade because switch more like arcade 100% even the characters face look pretty much same you can't give me wrong for that , because HD remake graphics more different than arcade & switch because is HD remake is not same like arcade & switch that's doesn't mean is bad the answer is no
That "detail" looks like as in HD because the effect it's try make only works on crt screens. The switch version at least tries to emulate that effect for hd screens.
Arcade- Retro, can't go wrong with it HD Remix- Good redraw you can't go wrong with either (unless you love nostalgia) Ultra- You either love it or hate it (I like it)
SSFII Capcom: Here's our sprite, here's what we wanted it to look like HD Remix Udon: You know, I really think that this portrait would pop if we reinterpreted it like thi- USFII Capcom: DID I STUTTER
I respect that the switch guys chose to upscale the portraits manually but I can still see that they should have spent more time on them. Manually upscaling portraits aren't quick jobs even in the slightest degree. The switch portraits lack integrity in areas such as the eyes, skin shading, hair, facial features, etc. All of which show that the original versions still remain as being better. Sorry about my rant.
I USUALLY HATE REMAKES BUT THIS IS A GREAT EXCEPTION !!!! SF II HD REMIX is beyond beautiful !!! A true Example of how to do a remake dignify of a classic !!!
I like the x360 and ps3 approach. It just fits to me. Yeah, switch is an hd version of the originals, but the anime approach fits such a fighting game.
360/ps3 Barlog and E. Honda are intense! The rest in the Udon style I wasn't pleased too much. Switch makes the portraits smooth and crisp. Cammy's portrait in Switch makes her look very pretty.
The O.G arcade wins and it's a masterpiece simply because in these HD and 4K times we live in now those pixelated graphics still stood the test of time I will say the switch version looks REALLY nice and if I had a switch that game would be my favorite game on the system cuz I love me some SF that being said SSF2THDRMX ( hot damn that's alot of abbreviations LoL😆) is one of my favorite SF games period I still go bacc to it monthly I love that they had the balls to not only change up the look with some of that sweet sweet anime manga style but I LOVED the remix music they had for each character it was just enough to feel fresh yet it still felt like SF2
Arcade portraits have stronger expressions due to the low-res sprites. Bigger sprites on the Switch didn't do them justice at all and characters look kinda awkward now.
I honestly prefer the switch as it bases the portraits off of the original arcade game. Though the Xbox 360 and PS4 have a nicely made anime style to the portrait, the Switch version created their portraits with similar facial features, color schemes, character poses and overall remodeling.
