Gear is, of course, an important part of portrait photography, but understanding the "why" behind your images will make it easier to choose a lens. Sony Artisan of Imagery Chris Orwig discusses how each of his lenses help capture his artistic vision and subject's feelings.

Chris is just amazing .. we need more of him .. I really loved his presentation and his ability to express in such a detailed manner, which is very hard to find.

Mr. Orwig's work really speaks to me. These are the kind of portraits I aspire to make. The kind of portraits where you feel a connection to the person being photographed.

I love this, your presentation. Mainly the deep sense of it, how photography really should be seen. Thank You!

That Yosemite valley picture...what a sublime setting. The beauty of the ray of light, the tiny silhouettes...fantastic!

One trick if you are using a wide lens (24 to 28) for a close-ish portrait is to crank the distortion adjustment in LR or C1 past 100% into the 150 range. That really helps with the distortion of facial features (nose, chin) when you shoot a portrait up-close with that focal length.

I want to make the switch to mirrorless from my Nikon D610. I mostly photograph people and not a lot of fast moving action. I'm debating between the a7III and a7IV. There isn't a huge difference in image quality. the newer model obviously resolves more detail, but the older model has better noise performance and retains more color info at ISO above 1600. The newer model has superior autofocus and a better viewfinder. Then there's the factor that it's $700 cheaper, at the moment. I'm also only going to be able to afford one lens, at the moment. It's between the 50 (1.4) and 85 GM. The 50's a bit more versatile, but the 85 does some magic with portraits in the medium to close-up range.
