I've just realized that of the four solo artists that effectively OWNED the 80s - Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, and Whitney Houston... Madonna's the only one still alive. She had legions of teenage girls dressing like her, talking like her, doing their hair and makeup like her. She performed without fear, without apology, and without hesitation. She was the definition of an icon.

Fun Fact: Madonna, Michael and Prince were all born in the same year, 1958, coincidentally. Michael and Madonna were born just 13 days apart.

@@Shane-Flanagan Until we reach a point in time when homosexuality ceases to be something that straight people (mostly straight men) look down on, we'll never reach a point where gay kids feel it's OK to come out and not live a lie and feel they hide who they really are. Why should men be _frightened_ of being labelled gay anyway?! I don't know any women who are 'frightened' of being labelled a lesbian. Toxic masculinity has a lot to answer for, sadly... 😔

Voguing grew out of the gay/trans scene of the 1920s and 30s in Harlem and was more-or-less confined to African Americans. Much like “rap battles”, each “house” (much like a gang) battled each other on the dance floor. A great movie about voguing is “Paris Is Burning”. Can’t wait to see Rob vogue!
@pacio49
@pacio49 3 года назад
Madonna was taken to her first Ball in Harlem in the late 80's and she immediately began to work with the Drag House Xtravaganza (still in operation today) who not only appeared in the video (not in drag) but choreographed the dance moves for it. If you enjoy the music, you should take in the version that Madonna did to perform Vogue for the MTV VMA awards. She was one of the first pop stars to really amp up the performances at the VMAs with Like a Virgin back in the day, writhing around on stage and helping MTV get its youthful, edgy reputation. Back then, Michael Jackson was the King of Pop and Madonna was the Queen. Take in her halftime show for the Superbowl as well when she came in on the backs of hundreds of bare-chested male models dressed as Cleopatra... right after Elizabeth Taylor died. :-)

That's a major part of the unstated subtext of the song. I think because the song picks up and becomes a lively dance track, the opening lyrics are overlooked by almost everybody, but they relate to Paris Is Burning: "Look around Everywhere you turn is heartache It's everywhere that you go (Just look around) You've tried everything you can to escape The pain of life that you know (Life that you know)" Vogue dancing was performed primarily by gay and trans people of color who often were homeless or housing insecure, many of whom resorted to sex work to survive, and therefore many of whom were living with HIV or dying from AIDS at the time. Their lives were incredibly difficult and devastating at times. (Paris Is Burning depicts all of this.) The escape from the harsh real world was going to balls (community-based dance clubs) where voguing competitions would be held and people could feel like winners. So when Madonna opens the song with the harsh real world, she then moves into the world of vogue dancing: "If all else fails And you long to be Something better than you are today I know a place where you can get away It's called the dance floor Yes, that's what it's for So, come on, vogue! Let your body move to the music Come on, vogue! Let your body go with the flow You know you can do it." Like a lot of songs by both Madonna and Britney Spears, this one is about dancing being an escape and a place to find freedom and self-satisfaction, but vogue is rooted in a subculture that marks a specific place and time in the world, and it's a lot more interesting in that way than just a catchy dance song (which of course it is).

The thing with Madonna is you'll never really "get" her with just one song. And I promise whatever you hear next and whatever video you see next will make you say "is that the same artist?" And the same with the one after that and even the one after that! Her work is often multi layered with meaning beyond the surface. Often ironic, sometimes witty, always so damn smart. Drawing inspiration from art, film and literature and presenting it in a compelling, visually stunning way. Recommended: Express Yourself, Ray of Light, Don't Tell Me, Like A Prayer, Borderline, Live to Tell, God Control, Take a Bow, American Life

It's hard to pick, but my favorite Madonna song may be "Into the Groove" and my favorite Madonna video may be "Material Girl". I love how the "Material Girl" video is a call-back to Marilyn Monroe in the movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"(1953) when Marilyn sings "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend". The official video for "Into the Groove" is scenes from the movie "Desperately Seeking Susan"(1985) and IMO doesn't really fit the song. YMMV.

Well... she can certainly sing and dance. Whether she can act is debatable. Never-the-less as a fan in the 80's I tried to watch all her movies: Shanghai Surprise; Desperately Seeking Susan; Who's That Girl; Dick Tracy. I thought her best acting job was in Dick Tracy. (I never saw Evita, but the song "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" from that movies pretty nice.)

Madonna's first album, released in 1983 self titled 'Madonna" coincided with MTV 's music video boom, and she set everything on fire, we had never seen anything like her before. Literally millions of girls in high school and junior high dressed like her (many people who think of 80's dress think of neon, this look was a HUGE part of the 80's - if you ever go to an 80's party, this is the look I would go for), I'm sure I still have lace gloves somewhere. Her first popular songs were "Holiday', 'Lucky Star', "Burning Up', 'Borderline', her first album (and subsequent albums of course) was one hit after the other. I think any of those songs give a much better flavor of how she started. Vogue was in 1990, and as an artist, she had already evolved quite bit by then. Check out her early stuff.

A brilliant reaction! So much fun to see someone react to this for first time. Also, as someone who has loved Madonna since I was 10, in 1987, I’d say it’s best to ignore people who say that Madonna’s earliest hits are her best work - those people have failed to grasp the most extraordinary thing about her which is the sheer longevity of her career and that she has never been a legacy artist. She is constantly reinventing herself and every single era of her 40 year career rewards exploration. Her most recent tour finished in early 2020, literally just before the pandemic, and was one of the most commercially successful tours of the year, by which time she was in her 60s. She’s a phenomenon.

With a degree in broadcasting, I'd like to offer some audio advice. I love how excited you two get, but the volume of the playback needs to be the same as y'all's mic. I keep having to turn up/down the volume whenever y'all go from the song to speaking. It's a small thing really, but it would help folks enjoy your videos more. I offer this advice out of love, not to cast shade. I enjoy your channel, and I hope that it continues for a long, long time. Hell, if y'all reacted to just the music I know, at 3 videos a day, I could watch y'all till Luka graduates high school!

It's not a small thing. The volume for the music needs to be adjusted so one can hear it without adjusting the volume ever time. The videos are great. I've loved Madonna since Everybody. It amazez me how the younger generation are not familiar with her. Lol I thought she was familiar to all. :)

I love when you guys discuss unfamiliar aspects of a song and make guesses as to what they represent. I really smile and laugh. Not at you, just with you. It really is entertaining. I find myself wanting to talk to you and give you the answers. LOL. So cute. Songs to hit that represent the different eras of Madonna's career: "Holiday", "Into The Groove", "Like a Virgin", "Crazy For You", "Open Your Heart:, "La Isla Bonita", "Papa Don't Preach", "Express Yourself", "Take a Bow", "Frozen", & "Music". Oh, and the people she mentioned in this song were fashion icons and actors from the Golden Age of cinema... Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Joe Dimaggio, Marlon Brando, James Dean, Grace Kelly, Jean Harlow, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Rita Hayworth, Lauren Bacall, Katherine Hepburn, Lana Turner, & Bette Davis. All, except Joe DiMaggio, were actors.

Madonna is the best selling female artist of all time for a reason. What I love about her is that each album sounds like a completely different artist and she is so completely diverse. Like a Prayer is probably everyone's favorite track from her, which is from the late 80s, but for me anything from her 1998 Ray of Light album is golden. Madonna has always channeled her inner Marilyn Monroe. Her video for MATERIAL GIRL does just that. The hands framed around her face are meant to act as a frame for the pose she is issuing or the image you would see on the cover of a magazine i.e. Vogue. Madonna has always been a fashion influencer and incorporated it in many videos. Her original look from '83 for the song LUCKY STAR was popular with youth girls and some boys for 2 years. Even though she had abandoned the look a year earlier. But you must watch her performance at the 1984 MTV awards as she writes andenrages parents at the time with her wedding dress in LIKE A VIRGIN. Her big money fabulous life skills are on display even as she was pregnant for the dance song, MUSIC.

There is soooooo much context to this song. It shined a spotlight on the lgbyq community especially the lgbtq communities of color. Voguing has a rich history growing out of Harlems ball room scene in New York City. This song is revolutionary and not to be taken at face value. The names are all old Hollywood actors and actresses some of whom were emulated in the ball rooms and some of whom were just iconic in their own way. You guys are in my top 5 channels but you crushed me on this one. Usually y’all are so informed. Also the commercials in the middle of the videos 2 and 3 times. I’m not going anywhere bc I love you guys commercials or not and I know you guys need to make money bc you work so hard and it shows but this is the only video that I was not thrilled to see. I adore you both and I had a channel once and when I didn’t know the context or did too many commercials I lost my base. I love watching you guys so I say this with total respect and adoration because I look forward to seeing you guys react. And I LOVE how Janis and Joe Cocker and procal haram touch y’all so deeply bc I feel the same way. Stay safe and keep up the good work. Check out Madonna girl gone wild mdna tour 2012.
