My prayers for your friend. The older we get the fewer friends we have left. It gets hard some days but I hope everyone hangs in there. God Bless the USA and Happy Thanksgiving.

It was nice to see the time you had with him to ride... so saddened that James lost his life a week later. :-(

Thanks, Glenn; an emotional roller coaster indeed. He had so much good in him, I kept waiting for him to explode. Little did I know at first that it was already all around him as well!

I felt so bad for James mother and family , the call no person wants or deserves . A mother is not suppose to bury her son . I thought of you Ed right away when I heard of James passing . I just watched your canopy vid you did with him plus all of James vids too . You are a class act Ed for sharing and bringing attention to the cause James gave his life for ..

I just heard of James Dobson and I also thought of your video on the canopy being designed and installed. As a trike rider my thoughts are with his family and friends.

I just don't understand why bikes, trikes and vehicles have to share the road. Why not make the sidewalks wider and the bikes can share with walkers. Hell, here in Illinois most of the people walk in the street all year long so what's the big deal with why bikes can't share the sidewalks? Even make the sidewalks oneway like the street

Waynes butler, Matt Galat (Ja Yoe Nation) did a pretty good job of describing it also. He made a nice remembrance video for James. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nDjX8MnqjyU.html

The last year for me has been a 'survival mode' for me thinking that I needed to get beyond this incident. Now, upon the 1-yr anniversary of James' passing, I find myself with a renewed sense of purpose. A month ago I felt that something was needed to help the cycling community overcome the loss of fellow riders so, I attended an out of town lecture on cycling safety and was sparked by the action of a small group of people (in Virginia) to highlight the need for motorists to pay attention to cyclists & others especially on shared roadways. I think that this next year for me will be a 'building' year for a fresh look to bring awareness to motorist-inflicted cycling deaths. James would approve!

I would really like to see an interview with the driver. Not to immediately blame him for the accident. But to find out how things can get safer for cyclists in the USA. The explanation by the police it was 'road conditions' just isn't enough for me. It is the weakest excuse imaginable. It should be a human right to go as slow as you want. If cars can't stop in time they are going too fast. As simple as that. Again I have no intention to accuse the driver of anything. All I want to know is if it could have been avoided. I think the public has a right to know.
@LogNotching
@LogNotching 5 лет назад
Spot on! In the back of my mind I feel that not only is an examination from the driver 'justified', but a discussion SHOULD BE PART OF THE 'FOLLOW-UP'....., whether 'ordered' or not. I'd like to know if he (driver) is as much a man as James when stepping up to the plate! I fear a 'puppet performance'.
@driewiel
@driewiel 5 лет назад
@@LogNotching According to a newspaper the driver was devastated. Now it is a young fellow with a Dodge Challenger. One can expect it is the type that likes to drive fast. But even if he did, it doesn't mean he was not paying attention. It can also be he was using his phone or drunk or whatever. We don't know. And that is what I would like to ask him. If it really was the 'poor road conditions' then it is the fault of , how shall I put it, the USA! The idea that everything has to give way to cars and if you get hit it is your fault . It is quite possible that the driver is willing to tell his story. And that can help others to not make the same mistake. Or to improve the design of the roads. Because bicycles and cars never go together if cars go faster then 60km/h. In the Netherlands there isn't a single road where cars and cyclists share that road if the speed limit is 80km/h. There will always be a cycle path next to it. If there isn't, then the speed limit will be 60km/h. In most cases the road has cycle lanes in different color asphalt with just a single lane in the middle for cars. Cars can be on the cycle lane if there is oncoming traffic. You really don't need that much to change the road to a cycle friendly design. Of course if you paint white markings all the way to the side of the road it will give drivers the impression they can drive fast because the lane is all theirs. And that is key to Dutch road design. You make it so that drivers automatically slow down. They won't if there aren't any obstacles. In other words, the 'poor road conditions' are when there aren't aren't any poor road conditions!!!! That is when people drive fast. They are good road conditions for cars. But the worst road conditions for cyclists.
@driewiel
@driewiel 5 лет назад
@@LogNotching And since I am from the Netherlands maybe you have the guts to ask the driver for an interview? Just explain to him we will not try to be the judge. All we want is insight into what happened. Yes some questions may be harsh. 'Did you drive too fast? Would you drive slower knowing now what the consequences are? Were you using your phone?' But also 'What do you think should change in road design?' Now it could be the biggest asshole on the planet. But it can also be a victim of the car lobby. Manufacturers advertise their products as sporty cool machines with so much horsepower. Even the most careful driver can kill someone. That is what cars do, they kill. If the authorities don't slow cars down, they are just as guilty. The USA is one of the worst countries in the world. Many 3rd world countries are safer for cyclists. Honestly, in the Netherlands a 4 year old child can ride a bicycle unsupervised across the country form north to south and east to west with no problem. Only then it is really safe. If only adult cyclist pedaling for their lives can ride on a road, then basically cycling is impossible. They might just as well make bicycle against the law completely.
@driewiel
@driewiel 5 лет назад
@@LogNotching Another thing. In Holland we don't ride on trails. We ride from A to B to schools or work or the supermarket. Because we can. People in the USA shouldn't be content with a trail going nowhere. It is on the road where REAL cycling is done. If you can't ride a bicycle to the next town in safety, then something is wrong. It is a human right. I thought Americans were that good in human rights and freedom? Well then. Riding your bike is just that. Cycling should be in your National Anthem. Although it is kinda what you would expect in the Dutch anthem isn't it?
@LogNotching
@LogNotching 5 лет назад
@@driewiel I believe some of your concerns WILL LIKELY BE ADDRESSED in the (official) published police report; let's see how its accuracy shadows facts! I really don't want to discuss this event NOW. However, there WILL be a time for our adversarial system of judicial ordering to sort things out where there will be a wash basin for 'dirty hands' (if needed)! Please be patient and find reason to embrace each precious moment life gives to you. And of course, smile often!
