Quick video showing possible cause and fix of a bump feed not working on your weedeater, this is just one possibility it could be a number of things causing your problem, but this is a good place to start. Thanks For Watching!!!
I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use ru-vid.comUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.
I have a brand new four cycle weedeater and the bump feed would not allow the line to come out,,,so after watching your video I decided to rewind the line in the opposite direction of the arrow and I’ll be a son of a gun it worked perfectly that is crazy thank you for this video! The spool clearly indicates to wind the line in the direction of the arrow so that is totally 100% incorrect! And this is the year 2022
It is 8/5/24 and this video plus your recommendation I believe is going to help me. Wow okay getting ready to try this on my old 24 yr old weed eater that I refuse to throw away. I will update you all to see if it worked.. Thanks a bunch and God Bless everyone..
Sir, you are a scholar and a gentleman. Worked like a charm. Have used this weed-eater for many years. Tuned it myself several times with sluggish results, had it tuned in a shop and same thing. Just tuned it again with new everything including a cutting head. It would stall. Adjusted the carb. No luck. Removed the head and it would crank like new. Put head on, crank, run for 5 or 6 minutes at the most. Rewound the line as you said and miracles happen. Completed the entire lawn for the first time ever without it dying or line jamming. Go figure. Maybe the company decided to make their money selling line. Planned obsolescence for the trimmer head and/or the motor. Shame on them if that's true. To you - THANK YOU!!!
Wow I am truly amazed by this, thank you so much for sharing your wisdom! Yesterday I got so frustrated the string kept breaking every 30 seconds because it was spooled wrong. Frustrated to the point of throwing the trimmer across the yard. Luckily i found your video, now the string hardly ever breaks and the bump feed is working. God bless you good sir!
Additionally, if you have unrestrained unspooling remove the lock washers, remove the slider assembly and the spring under the slider assembly. Gently stretch/elongate the spring. Reassemble and should work as original. I called Ryobi and MTD technical support and they were both too incompetent to suggest this simple procedure. Also, took to my local repair shop who was also too incompetent. They all said to replace the entire string trimmer attachment. Saved myself ~$100! The repair only cost me about 15 minutes of my time after I figured out what the problem was.
I have a Makita XRU02 cordless trimmer, and that was my problem as well. Arrows on the bottom of the spool indicate spool rotation not which way to wind the line. Hold spool with arrows facing you, then wind the line clockwise. Fixed my feed issue. THANK YOU!
No more problems with mine. I load the wire both ways and still work like crap and now, its a beautiful piece of art on the wall of my shed. Who said that tantrums are not creative.
🦉 wind string in Opposite direction to the instruction on the trimmer 😳 ...ACTUALLY WORKS!!!. + Same again for closing that unit - opposite direction to instruction!!👍 ThanX (from New Zealand)
Following directions isn't always the best thing to do. Watched your video, went out to the shop and pulled the spool out of the weedeater. String was wound in the direction on the spool. Found one of my original spools from my Husqvarna weedeater and sure enough it showed to wind the string in the other direction. Re-wound the spare spool and it works like a charm. I guess different manufacturers wind the spools differently. Thanks for your simple fix.
Thanks for your advice, I tried it and it worked marvelously except the whole string and feed apparatus fell apart and I lost the spring and one eyelet. You see I bought a new Shindaiwa weed whacker and it came with a complicated spool system,. When I carried it to the neighbourhood Agro shop, the owner couldn't figure out how to assemble it, so he sold me a simpler one. The new spool required the string to be wrung in the opposite direction to the spool my whacker came with, therefore I suffered the same things you did. That is, the string wouldn't feed and it kept jamming and tightening up on itself. So I followed your instructions and voila it worked like a true weed whacker. I was making fantastic headway with my work until the apparatus fell apart. Anyway your advice was bang on. Now I have to get a new spring and eyelet, since I lost those when it fell apart.
I have a Tanaka TBC 160 trimmer with an original Tanaka BRAIN auto-feed trimmer head. I tried winding the opposite direction and it works now, Thanks! My guess is that the "wind" arrow points in the direction that you rotate the spool, not the direction to wrap the line.
The nylon cutting twine on my double head strimmer keeps fusing together and as a result won't feed out I have discovered if I don't let it build up to max speed it works fine so I keep switching it off and on which is not the way it should be used I have tried many grades of nylon but I'm unable to resolve this problem. Can you help please
I found the same issue on my old straight shaft. It’s confusing for the consumer but the arrow is indicating the spin direction, I believe. Either way, spoil your line in the opposite direction & she’ll feed fine. Seems like they would put an Arrow indicator showing the way to string but some engineers are just built backwards.. lol
I figured this out a while ago. It's actually that you put the string on facing away from the arrow. Hold it still, and wind the spool in that direction to load it. I guess it is a bit counter intuitive.
So this is the one think I haven't tried yet. I hear soaking your string in water overnight helps but I didn't do it last night so have to make due since the string either keeps breaking off or sucks back in and have to continuely stop the thing and pull the string out again. Hopefully this will work though. If it does it's pretty weird that they would never tell you that unless they just want you to keep buying new springs or weedeater heads altogether..so I'm guessing that's why they don't tell you anything useful to it it going problem free.
I watched this then figured out when I bumped the black thingy shield was keeping the bumper from getting bumped. I hold it at a high angle and bump it gently on a brick.
in regards to this jonsered 220. I think the bolt is too short. Someone may have put a different one in. because , once I put the head on and tighten the bolt down, there is NO spring in the head. If I don't tighten the bolt down and leave it a little loose, its just a matter of minutes until the centrifucal force tightens the bolt down tight and thus eliminating any spring or slack . and that is why this thing won't advance any more string. does this sound logical. I need to find a store that has left handed bolts and get a couple sizes longer, that way the bolt will be seated without clamping down on the head. Does this make sense?
That does make sense, or maybe its been broke off or something. On my husqvarna without a spacer in it it will tighten up. Its hard to find left hand bolts, might have to order online. Yeah, I'd say its worth a shot to see what it helps.
Thanks. I'm going to try this for my poulan pro that has opposite problem, it feeds out with smallest bump, goes thru roll in 10 minutes. Any advice. Thanks
I have this issue on the stihl fs45. I feed the line in using the spool to wind it on through the holes then cut the loop to give two correct length wackers. Won't bump feed really pissed off with it!!
Took my Kobalt apart...this one, unlike last, has NO spring. Cleaned and oiled, even the line. Still not feeding string. I'm sure it's strung perfectly. Last Kobalt, supposedly same version, head's made quite different.
I have a kolbalt 40 w and it NEVER BUMP FED RIGHT. The gave me another at lowes - same thing!! 1/2 hour weed whacking 1/2 fixing string feed. Repeatedly
Have jonsered 220 weed trimmer. Noticed when I get the spool on there is no spring in the head. It is solid. So it will not bump feed. There is a spring. Don't know if the thing is suppose to be auto feed or not.
I tried to find more online but all it says is bump feed, it doesn't anything about auto feed. I'm not familiar with that head right off hand, most are either bump or auto feed. Thanks For Watching!!!
I dont fancy myself to be a weed-eatin fanatic, so Im aware that i could be wrong... however, i have found that spooling the line too tight, no matter the direction, can cause the line to pinch into itself causing a malfunction. Particularly when using the fancy-shmancy square line. has anyone else found that to be true, or am I simply an anomaly?
I hear ya! Thats is true it will hang up. Your right, square line will jam up more than round or something, but this orange string i use hasn't jammed up yet. Thanks for Watching!!!
I've had exactly that issue with star shaped string. I'm thinking of going back to round string. A shame as the star shaped string really rips up the long grass effortlessly. Great video +fnaguitarplayer9 I'm going to try your tip and see if it works. Thanks
The exact problem I'm having now....Everything works great except for the string keeps getting pinched and won't allow for release when I bump it. I'm using a string that I have used numerous times on other weed eaters with no problem. It's a small gauge string that I'm guessing it just doesn't like
Hi I'm a guitar player to lol. My weed eater keeps advancing at 4.00 a piece do yard once. Every time I move to next area it advances please help God bless Tom Tracy
I hear ya! Sometimes when let string out like that it could be a missing spring, or the tabs on the spool are broke letting it free spin in the head. thanks for watching!!!
Have new echo 400 speed head same problem doesn't feed tight and jams i have the spool in the right way L facing up like other videos say forever taking it apart
I HAVE A PROBLEM. I HAVE A MURRAY TRIMMER. THE HEAD TRIMMER WASEN'T WORKING I TOOK IT OFF TOO TRY TO FIX IT AND FOR SOME REASON NOW IT WON'T STAY ON IT'S LOOSE
The threads may have gotten chewed up, you may have to replace it if that is what happened. Or maybe a lock washer fell out and thats causing it to do that. If its the type that screws on that is... thanks for watching!!!
not sure what you mean by bump spinner, but if it has the type of bump feed end that screws in that holds the spool, alot of times you have use channel locks or something to get it loose. Thanks for Watching!
I thought of that too, but on all my other weedeaters (troybilt and 2 curved shaft weedeaters) I wind the string in the direction of arrow and they all work fine, this is the only one i've ever had to do backwards haha I do always take the head off, but that would make sense if you left it on and fed the string into it. Thanks for Watching!!!
Damn it, can't believe it! it worked on bolens!Comon China, ridiculously wrong spelling ...ok, laughable sentence writing grrr but ok, not knowing left from right ,...really!
