Just because the ux industry is coming to an end doesn’t mean that designers will be
useless or that products will lack good ux. It will just CHANGE.

And what comes next? The shift I'm talking about here is something I've been mentioning since at least 2019. It's not because of AI but rather something more prosaic - business driven products, then engineering driven and design being pushed out as less and less important.
UX design is not growing for a while now and the industry is shrinking.
But I am lucky to have a community of awesome designers around me who learn the right way and are getting jobs and promotions even in this economy.
However from 2025 the designer skills that are in Demand won't be moving some rectangles in a nice way in Figma or some other tool that takes over the UX/UI tool space.
Let's explore what it is!

I agree to this so much , the only reason I got into ux design is bcoz i love business and I think ux is a great way to solve business related problems , the focus on people , product , etc . There are so many books written on ux are they dumb ? Thats my question

UX as a field won't die, it may be called something else in the future (wouldn't be the first time), but the knowledge and skills you develop in UX will always be relevant and marketable to our corporate masters :)

UX is just web design with a new name and after the amputation of the technical skills (HTML/CSS/JS). I used to do wireframes, flows, diagrams and all the UX stuff as a web designer without that much hype. Today as a UX lead I can do all those abstractions but can also code and do front end design directly. Making those designs come to life without depending on any one else.

UX isn’t ever going to be over, but the specialized role can easily be replaced or filled in by others. It’s been handled by web Designers, Online marketers, and automation experts for years. UX had always been that grey area of those 3 roles, what add a forth who can’t do as much as the other roles.

So I partially agree… what’s discouraging is not AI but the current job market. If you look at all the job postings, all of them basically want senior. From what I’m seeing today, juniors who get hired recently either 1). Have a relevant degree and multiple internship 2). Have skills other than UX, like coding or motion 3). Have v matching background( like someone who’s in healthcare industry for years and get a UX job in the field.

I agree that a lot of the steps of the UX process can really be optimized or replaced by new technologies, but there's always a strategy and thinking part that I don't see replacing yet, even by AI. For instance, if you're redoing a financial dashboard, you need to choose which data to show and how, knowing what the users need and how they feel about that screen. After make some decisions you can use ready components to speed up the final screen, but the thinking behind it for me is the true value we can offer. Just copy and paste an entire screen and switching the font/color is cheap UX in my opinion. I mean, you can do that to launch something faster, but building a real product over time that grows and serve a specific audience for a specific purpose is another game.

Yes the industry is evolving, In the 80s, a designer who could use the computer is a highly sorted one. The design industry as a whole is one of the most evolved, one could literally see it move very fast because it has a strong tie with technology. For as long as humans exist, there would always be design needs which is where the designer comes in handy. With the way things are going, in the short term, human to human interaction is greatly reducing and being replaced by interfaces which needs the skills of the designers. Ai is another tool for designers to use to improve their quality of work. As humans evolve, design needs will increase to meet the demand. Designers only need to be smart, creative and open to learning to cope with the changes. My Opinion.

I always had this question in my head for some time now and thanks to you for posting such content. My biggest question is if the industry starts evolving now what would a beginner like me have to start with once again? Like I have just scratched the surface of Ux design as a whole and in the last 6 months the whole industry has started to evolve slowly by moving away from flat design and with AI to make things even worse I genuinely fear this shift as a beginner. I am totally confused for now. Hope this video might be the answer to some of my questions.

it’s a bit unfortunate. i’m currently in school for graphic design. finally pursuing my dream and now it seems the industry is going to the bots. so frustrating. it’s makes me wonder should i just get into something else. but Graphic design is truly my dream. i already feel behind at my age but now i feel completely dusted. idk what to do.

Nah, don't worry much about it bro, yes, part of the industry is going to bots, specially the designers who only do what the clients ask but for a strategical designer, the ones who understanding branding, marketing strategy, how to make their brand get better, SEO (for UI Designer), UX Strategy overall, etc, it will always have space on the market, so it's important to go after the strategical part of the design and not only know how to develop beautiful things.

Totally agree man! Being a UX/UI designer since around ~2016, for the last few years I felt incredibly bored. All patterns are invented, and it is difficult to somehow stand out/or just not interesting to do that standard work as before. And now I'm starting to realize why, and what to do with it.

Yeah, and it's funny to see how many UXers are scared by it and try to deny that happening - but they know it and they see it. Nobody does research anymore except for a couple big corpos. Most companies copy entire flows (before any UI) from other apps. It's nowhere close to the UX hype of 2009.

You described everything that I've thought recently about my new UX career! All of sudden I felt the death of the design: everything is made using templates, speed is the priority, working hours are less and less. I see how what I'm doing in Figma now will be done by AI maybe already next year. I loved this profession , but I guess it's over for me. I just don't feel excited anymore and the future prospects of this career (I'm working in a Junior role) are extremely uncertain.

I feel you, most of what I'm seeing is also not that exciting for me anymore - but there are cases in which true craft is still needed and useful - and at some point those highly templatized businesses will be hit with lots of boring users switching to products that offer some delight. Not all is lost yet :)

I am aware of the dangers of that title - but the message is too important to pass out under something "more boring". The idea is that UX of course will exist, but the UX industry itself will shrink in a big way in the coming years and most designers are taking the wrong path right now - not to differentiate but instead to conform to norms that led to UX being predictable / boring and full of copying stuff without innovating.

I was kinda worried from the title, but everything you are saying is what I thought everyone assumed. I thought UX was all about being a creative problem solver and also being able to translate those solutions into great designs. Or am I missing something?

Problem Solving got replaced by hand-picking a cheap, appropriate enough solution from a pool, diminishing the role of designers. So we need to show we can really solve problems for the business to embrace it back.

yeah I agree for 80% of time you can reuse patterns and systems already out there like login, search, product pages etc. but there is that 20% where you really have to make it easier for the user to use the product, things like match mental model of the user to the flow and layout of the interface, be creative about displaying the needed information with minimal cognitive load and best space management, finding the right balance of minimalism, evoking emotion and delight in users, these are the things that will always need a UI-UX designer, designers should focus maximum time on solving unique problems and driving the world forward, not making the 100000th Button System or login page

what i've seen a lot among UX fellows is focus only on the user side of things or only on the business side. and this cannot survive for long, the purpose of ux is not to find what users want, we already know that, or to make them do what the business wants, they'll oppose eventually, but to make users needs and business goals work well together which is far more complicated.

I never understood how some UX designers focus on one thing and then send their work to someone else. Designers keep their mind open, they see the bigger picture. I have this same feeling. In my opinion Ai force industry to generic attitiude. If someone who is not designer can make some animation (not just motion design) using Ai and simple tool in Ae that mean that graphic designer need to know that also and make this better. I do not understand people who use only ps, ai and id. I have spend last year learning, ps, ai, id, Ae, Blender (5months and still learning) and have published my work on ig. I have thought about creating my own website but i do not know html/css/java and I thing that is stupid to buy someone code and design. I should learn this and after that make this.

I have seen tons of thumbnials like this where the youtubers use such triggering threating title mentioning Ai just for the attention and then end up putting nohting valuable for the viewers but just another insecuirty and struggling to grow as designer. idk if this is related to Ai but using such title sounds nothing less than a deceptive pattern.

It's definitely VERY tough to get a job right now, but the main thing is that starting NOW can still make sense. Starting slowly or in a year from now will not really make sense anymore - the competition will be way too big.

What I miss is in UX nowadays is not only the research part but also the ideation, creative and strategy part where we can think about fresh and more meaningful solutions.

Diversify your skillset into things such as development & business because those areas are bolstered by 'design thinking'. As the videos states you'll spend less time drawing rectangles for things such as detailed mockups and way more time offering solutions (often via well-presented written docs or even digital whiteboards) in key areas that you can have profound influence over (at any point in development or business decision/sale lifecycles). Your design thinking is the angle that your working peers aren't coming in at when attacking the problems). Currently if all you are is an 'image monkey' that includes animation then you need to take a step back and think broader! Great vid!

@looksmatteronly For example, if I have development skills/knowledge, not only can I have better conversations with the dev team, but I can work on 'tickets' & contribute to the repo whilst design may need to take a back seat for a short while... I can also write technical design documentation (Scss, css animation, grid system etc etc). I could suggest new frameworks (from a design/front-end perspective). I can then take this even further (because I understand our chosen framework & its limitations). I could propose a new SaaS app to help the business achieve a certain goal, providing realistic deadlines & expectations, including resources to aid in bringing it to life... (not just an app mockup) All this 👆 because I chose to diversify into the development space It's hard to get across via a YT comment. Hope this helps a little!

@@MalewiczHype Yep. I keep my UX/UI job mainly because I can do front end and can build prototypes directly in code and deliver production-ready designs. I can also have conversations with technical developers, marketing and the business people, otherwise I'd be stuck on the la-la-land of sticky notes and boxes with arrows. Worst thing is those box-and-arrow designers think they can determine the destiny of an organization with their boxes.

Yes, but don't rely on certificates - almost no employers care about those. They want a portfolio that is engaging and interesting first and foremost - and good UI ;)

None of the skills encompassed in this video are skills I regularly use as a UX designer. I RARELY spend time working on UI and mocks.. on a day to day my job is working with engineers to work out the information architecture and user flows and navigating technical constraints and doing A/B testing and running design workshops on problem solving. “A clean and easy to understand interface” is a given, not the job itself

I acknowledge the validity of your insights, particularly the notion that the wheel has already been invented hence I was really looking forward to some practical advice in your videos. However, I've noticed that most of your videos are just about promoting your courses, which makes sense. But for newcomers like me in UX design with limited funds, free resources are our mainstay. I was hoping to find useful insights in your videos, but many seem centred around your paid courses. It would be awesome if you could create some content for folks like us too.

what do you mean? 90% of my videos are not at all about my courses :) I have 3 full playlists for beginners to learn from and I actually advise people to start with those before buying anything (from anyone) - hours of free learning :)

You are saying UX Design is shrinking but here in India, it is growing. In India, The UX/UI market was USD 465 million in 2021 and is expected to grow to USD 1346 million by the end of 2028.

same answer I can see on google when writing- "is ux design worth to start" but basically my point is, India doesn't evolve itself but by seeing other countries like- US, UK, china, etc. So by 2028 Ux design will only become small subset of designing and company would ask for multi skilled people.!!!

The thumbnail is absolutely giving wrong impressions. I am against it. If this was true then big companies like Google n Microsoft would have stopped hiring UX Designers. Maybe the work UX designers do, will get changed but UX Design is not disappearing.

The problem with UX started with a simple normencleture mismatch, unitentional misinformation, fast trend of technolgy tools and arrogant gatekeeping by the people of the past in their failed practice of not making the profession go global before the down of figma democratization. The solution is to readress the problem eg. Digital Interface Designer insted of UI Designer etc. above all it seems the future of UX Product Mangers with design background as that is what your video interpretes in my perspective.

Despite many UXers were trying to defend their positions/importance/seats on the table, I think what Michal shared here is legit and it’s already happening. Take Canvas as an example. Businesses love Canvas and Designers despise of it (look at those memes about Ai PSD vs Canvas). Isn’t that someone feel threatened of their worth? Imagine you’re a tech entrepreneur and you want to build a product. Who is the first person you wanna partner with? A designer or an engineer? If you have to choose one. As a UXer, I didn’t mean to devalue design. Like what Michal said, our mindset needs to evolve and our skill sets need to keep up. Design is more than just delivering tangible outputs. It’s about engineering solutions to solve problems.

Don't worry, it is changing and the name UX may not last long, but many of us are still pushing to make design relevant again and through innovation and creativity we'll do that. IT's just an end of an era but a beginning of a new, different one.

After 35yrs in UX (1983-2018, the last 7 at Google) I chose to retire because of the issues raised in this video. My final product, Google Cloud Search could have been designed almost completely cut-and-paste from Material and iOS UX libraries, built and approved via Figma by someone with very little UX knowledge. My title “design explorer” was a misnomer as there were few to no opportunities to explore a novel design.

Thank you Paul, it means a lot coming from someone with that much experience (I started in 1998 and I already feel exhausted with the lack of creativity and innovation). Some say that this means the industry has matured - patterns are established, safe is good because it's cheap and businness quickly caught on. Then we end up with things like Facebook's Business Portal, or Jira and others - huge teams making amazingly convoluted and plain crappy products because the status quo is impossible to move. It's my last two years before switching to doing other things too so I feel your decision - congrats! Also, on a side note, checked out your profile - good to see a fellow Iggy friend (our best friend is at @mortytheiggy on insta, but haven't had the time to update)

This a problem on 90% of jobs, not only UX. Scary thing, but AI will overtake most professions. Another thing to take in consideration: Elon Musk is an egoist person and is not an absolute genius. He has made some songs too and it doesn't mean he is a good musician or producer. His recently rebrand decisition is bad, very bad. In his arrogance he think he can do 90% jobs alone and keep all the money to himself.

not really to the bots as much as “processes” ux helped create. Safe and cheap is in. As for Elon - he does reckless things but has 150M followers to give him momentum so even bad ideas can win - I miss the old twitter logo but I see a start of a precedent here.

I think UX is simply evolving than anything. No harm meant but those with just design backgrounds arent as desirable as they once were in the older days. When you think of user centered you think of a person. A person with backgrounds in cognitive psychology, psychology, anthropology, etc really any of the social sciences is gonna have a signicantly better understanding of human behavior than a designer duh right? Taking it a step further to train a cognitive psy major with bootcamps or a few college courses the overall basics of UX design and give them a internship train them in the company culture, and move them up the ladder is going to be significantly easier than training a art/design background major on complex human psychology. Thats the shift that i am seeing. Its not pretty but it is what it is.

You don't need a Designer to Design a Logo. I don't think that's great example. However I don't know anyone who calls Twitter X. Everyone still calls it twitter. Part of it is people being change averse but then again I think in general it doesn't resonate with the people/users. So was it really a successful change? And would it actually been better to have a UX person in charge there? Probably.

The thing is that it doesn't matter if it's a good brand or not, it's already adopted and it shows other CEO's that you CAN do stuff like that, potentially face some backlash, ignore it and grow the brand. They launched creator payouts almost immediately after and it seems like X/twitter is doing better despite those bad decisions. That's moslty my point here - that what elon does disregarding a design process (whether it's branding or UX or otherwise) can lead to a domino effect the more successful his actions become.

Oh but that's also part of the point - the quality is declining because companies want CHEAP and FAST, not GOOD. So generally it's all going towards lower quality almost across the board. Small number of brands are going the other direction.

Not blowing my own trumpet 🎺 but I've been thinking outside of the box for years with my UI designs, but I am always (mostly always) blocked by the limitations or laziness of the dev team. If I had a £$ for every time I heard..."Yeah looks great, but the dev team are concerned this section and this section and this animation, will take too long and cause scope creep.....blah blah blah!" It's one of the main reasons we post stuff on Dribbble, stuff that hardly ever goes into production, but we get to wet our whistle and showcase what we can do as designers.

That's not what I said. I said starting to learn now will get you to the right spot to be in 2 years. If someone starts in 2 years they likely won't be needed anymore (still possible to get a job but MUCH harder)

I'm saying the industry is shrinking and its importance being minimized in favor of safe, boring, predictable (jakobs law but to 100th degree) processes. And for that the industry doesn't need as many people anymore.

I understand why you may feel that way but that title is 100% true. The UX as an industry (as we know it now) won't exist in two years. And it's nothing new - I've been talking about it at least since 2019. It's shrinking and the UX role is being diminished. That doesn't mean designers won't exist or that things will now have bad UX - we just reached a tipping point.

UI, graphic design- sure. UX design? Nah... Maybe from an agency pov- shortterm projects, small generic flows and apps can be easily copied. Complex and unique products will always require someone to plan them out.

@@r3dp1ll strategy is a broad term. There will always be a place for a ux designer in a complex product team. You could leave that job to a dev or a business analyst in easy cases like e-commerce. But not e.g. a corporate accounting crm tool, or something just as specific, where flows need to be verified multiple times.

I love these type of videos that challenge the status quo. But respectfully, please don't say 'UX is over' at the start of the video and thumbnail and then proceed to give an example of Twitter or X's 'LOGO' redesign project. Of course it's part of the 'experience' but that's mostly about Branding if we're talking specifics. I agree UX design as a space is getting a bit stagnant and people are relying on ready made design systems for UI etc. However, one needs to realise that a lot of problems have been solved by UX to such an extent that there's no need for a new UX designer to work on them. They can just copy the industry best practice. Because UX designers have already cracked the code on so many Product problems. However, till the time there's going to be product innovation, there are going to be newer problems to solve for UXers and it might be called something else (Product designer/Owner etc.) but UX in it's core will never die. Because Product and Services innovations are never going to die. Unless there's an apocalypse of course :)

The branding example was a high level "design" example, not related to UX but rather seeing how "things are being done" now and how others will emulate elon. Same thing will happen with MANY processes, including focusing on way more developers and much less designers. I'll do part 2 of this specifically about UX (only) as many senior designers from the US reached out with A LOT of examples of how their work is being now downgraded and less important.
