I can never say enough how much I appreciate all the support from the people on Patreon and all of you who watch my videos! I like to do video chats with my Patreon community and give them the most up-to-date updates from the trail, but since I think other people may have some of the same questions I still want to share some of the information from these Q&A's with everyone. So as my regular video updates catch up, I'll post an edited version of each Q&A publicly on RU-vid. You can follow me on Patreon here: / homemadewanderlust
It can be difficult to find reliable WIFI from the trail, but I hope to do these more in the near future. If you want to participate in the next Q&A head over to / homemadewanderlust . Every patron, no matter how much you pledge will have access to all these Q&A's, and I will try to give as much notice as possible before they start. Hope you enjoy and thank you again so much for watching this channel!
If you'd rather not sit through the whole video I made a little table of contents below so you can click through the topics that interest you.

Wonderful video, I'm bow hunting for elk in Colorado, every time I get to a steep climb and start to make excuses of why I don't need to go there I think, Dixie would without thinking about it. So my 64" 230 whimp butt goes up. Thanks young lady.

Dixie, you mentioned not wanting to eat any more peanut butter on tortillas - but I think you'll like this - mix about 1-3 tablespoons of peanut butter thoroughly with at least an equal amount by volume of dark brown sugar and spread in a strip in the middle of the tortilla. It can be premixed or mixed on the tortilla itself. It tastes a lot like Reese's cups. They contain about 480 calories each if using 3 tbsp each of pb and brown sugar. Thanks for making your videos. I love them.

I used to use a BV500 and had no trouble getting about 25,000 calories of food (that I like) in it. Now I use a BV450 with my smaller pack, and I can get 21,000 calories of food in it. I know it's different for through-hikers, but if your only going out for a 100 to 200 mile hike, 3,000 calories per day is fine. I try to use calorie dense foods with some treats thrown in. I do have my first night's dinner outside the bear canister, but the rest always goes in the canister. I just got back from a 15 day hike in the Sierra last week, and had a bear come into my camp. It was probably a very good thing that my food was in my BV450. I did the fastest pack up and was back on the trail in 10 minutes after I got the bear to leave my camp site, though it did hang around the perimeter of the clearing. I know lots of people, through hikers especially, poo-poo using bear canisters, but I've had more than one run in with a bear and the reason some don't run away and hang around established camp sites is people not using bear canisters and habituating the bears to associate people with food.

Hi. Thank you for your videos. I've been hiking for a long time. But mainly a day hiker. I have to prep for hikes like Oak Grove to High point which climbs 3600 ft of elevation gain in 13 miles Back and forth, close to where you were at by Warner Springs, or San Jacinto. To think you do these types of hikes day in and day out is encouraging and inspiring. So, thank you for sharing your experience. I wish you good health and safe hiking.

Dixie, love your videos. But you really should emphasize that the bear canister requirement is not in place to protect us or our food from the bears, but rather to protect the bears from us. A bear that grows accustomed to people and their food is often a bear that needs to put down. Please follow proper food storage in the Sierra!
@staceyplaysthebassey
@staceyplaysthebassey 6 лет назад
Her exact words were a bear canister "protects bears from getting your food." I think she had the protection of wildlife, including bears, on her mind the entire time. But, you're absolutely right -- frequently humans are more dangerous to bears than they are to us!

Just to share with anyone suffering from plantar fasciitis or frequent pulled calf muscles. I had these for quite a while and got no relief from doctors. Then a pharmacist showed me an article about scar tissue inside the muscles. I had 4 or 5 sessions of "deep tissue massage" which was very painful, especially the first two times, and the problem cleared up. Happy Trails.

Nice channel. You mentioned Sawmill Pass. That might make a good topic for you in a resupply video-the best guidebook for the Sierras calls that region The High Passes, and folks should know that Sawmill and Taboose are not good options. It’s a long walk to the 395. On bear cans: once in the Yosemite high country I left a tiny bottle of oil in my mess kit, and that was enough. Bite holes and an empty bottle in the morning. And those carbon bear cans are awesome. I rented one for Rae Lakes Loop, and my Bear Vault got jealous🙂 Good stuff, congrats on making it!

Real carbon fiber is very very tough, the hard part is there is no standard requirements that manufacturer disclose how much carbon is actually in their products. Big difference in strength between 1% carbon and 100% both can be listed as carbon fiber. Just depends on the honesty of company making products, or course there large price difference too.
@michaelb1761
@michaelb1761 6 лет назад
Yes, carbon fiber should be stronger than aluminum; however, that doesn't mean that I would intentionally bang the poles together. :-)

I know this video is dated, but I used the BV450 for multiple trips in the Sierra and had no problem fitting all food items inside. You just need to be creative with what you take and removing all packagin, etc to reduce the volume of your food (calories.)

Back in 1970most of us were carrying 50-75 lb packs Nothing was reliable in those days so we packed in as much as we could We used STARRS guide for the trail which usually didn’t exist A common entry in the guide was Go upstream 500 yds and cross there But alas there was no crossing and we’d go miles out of our way makingg our own trail And river crossings We didn’t put food in a bear canister There were no bears! And no one use water filters or poles!

Bearikade Expedition at ~9"x14" will not fit horizontally in any ultralight backpack that I know of. It will fit vertically in a lightweight ULA Catalyst, but not many others, if any. Canisters are to protect the bear (not the food) from getting too bold and then being euthanized when it learns to enter camp to steal food and camper gets hurt fighting for it or avoids the whole mess camper's to blame for by just killing the bear.

the fires are pretty terrible all over Oregon, especially in the Eagle creek area of the trail- so bad that the fire jumped across the Columbia river. The smoke makes outdoor activities pretty unbearable, even if the trails happen to be open. That would be a reason I personally would encourage a flip flop. It might be the only way to finish. I don't think the fires are so bad in Northern Washington

I have had to attempt on the 80 and just couldn't do it took me 5 hours to get up Springer not being able to see where I'm going like walking over concrete suitcases and basketballs if you can't see LOL but this next year 2018 is my year I'm going to do it I'm going to do some night hiking and see if that helps me I can see a little bit at night but I can't see two feet in the daytime. I just wanted to touch base with you and just tell you how much you meant to me and I just plain love you and I can't wait to see how you finish up the PCT, I'm not sure if that's one for me or not but I sure would love to, I am looking at the Pacific or the the Continental Divide trail that one's right here by the house but the 80 and the Continental Divide but that PCT looks pretty rough I'm scared of snakes LOL. Anyway love you sweetness hope to see you sometime and good luck I know you can whip it.

Only for a few months unless you address the underlying issue in the meantime. Multiple cortisone shots are not good for your joints, coming from someone who has had multiple cortisone shots. You really need to address the underlying issue. I finally hit upon a series of stretches and strengthening exercises that have basically eliminated my plantar fasciitis, or at least the severe pain (the bone spurs are still there, however).

Please don't spread the notion that it is ok to bend the rules about bear canisters. You reach a lot of people with your videos, so please only teach proper form. Care about bears!

She didn't say it was ok... she said, "I'm not saying it's right" ... and then explained that having a bear canister that fits all your food "protects bears from getting your food." Admitting that other people bend the rules isn't the same as saying "it's ok to bend the rules." I thought she answered that question truthfully and it's clear she absolutely cares about bears and all wildlife, for that matter. But you're right, we should all care :)

Peter Welsh are you implying she is incapable of pronouncing "Nevada" correctly because she's from the south?
