Great stock pile to choose from. Great spring and protectors. That will be a very nice vise. Thanks Jayce.

When you put that metal in the vice it sure sucks the heat out of it quick!
@FarmsteadForge
@FarmsteadForge 11 месяцев назад
Ya it really does until you get a few heats in, then that helps heat the vise up so it doesn't pull it out quite as quick. When I made the bolt on bracket I heated up a block of steel to warm up my anvil before I started my forge weld. You can do that with a vise as well.

Nice Video sir. I also had to make some for my large 6" post vises. I made several for smaller 4" vises, you explained it well as you were doing it. I used mild steel, as you really only have it to spread the vise back after you take the tension off. Hardenable steel is always a good choice though.
@FarmsteadForge
@FarmsteadForge Год назад
Ya mild steel works just fine, in this case I was just using what I had. I won't harden this, the spring will be springier with a little more carbon vs mild steel. Thanks for stopping by and thanks for your comment!

I have a 5" post vise that while the jaws meet good on the horizontal plane they do not meet on the vertical plane. Watching your videos has helped me understand how to fix this I think. I will be looking at it closer to find where the problem is. Have you ever encountered this? You earned my subscription today! Keep up the good work! Thanks!
@FarmsteadForge
@FarmsteadForge Год назад
Without looking at it I'm not exactly sure, you are more than welcome to email me a picture or send it to me on Instagram and I can try to help you troubleshoot it. I have another vise that doesn't line up in more ways than one, I'll be doing a video on that one as soon as I wrap this series up and hopefully that'll be really helpful. Thank you for subscribing, my goal with these videos always has been and will be first and foremost to help someone out!

@FarmsteadForge Great Video, I am glad you want the harder version first. the Wings are a good idea I like the look of them as well. I assume you throw a little beeswax or paste wax on to keep the rust away? or will you do that when assembling the whole project? The jaw protectors, LOVE IT... I am going to make a set of those for sure..... Do you use the jaw protectors all the time or only when filing? Looking forward to part 2 and part 3 Army. SE Oregon
@FarmsteadForge
@FarmsteadForge Год назад
Hi, I would probably only use the jaw protectors while I am grinding or filing. I should build a set for the vise on my welding table but it has had so many grinder gouges already I never bothered. On post vises, swage blocks, anvils, etc, I like to use boiled linseed oil on them when I am all done. I'm glad you enjoyed it, thank you for watching!

We need another vise for this project, could you go grab a leg vise off the pile of them in the back. Sure boss. Customer comes by this guy’s shop and asks do you have any leg vices you could sell? Yeah I’ll be right back, brings an end loader around and dumps a pile of them in front of him, there you go, take your pic.

well I have the same problem. my son came with this incomplete antiquity, lacking the spring among other things, and I thought to use a croc shoe it is spongy and recovers its shape like a spring@@FarmsteadForge
