Most people will consume a protein and carbohydrate rich meal or shake directly after a resistance training workout. Is this necessary? Can fasting occasionally after a workout provide benefits? Find out the best post workout strategy in terms of meal consumption here!

5/5 bro as usual, u can spend 24 hours after your workout still in fast with no muscle window loss, and people misunderstand one thing: if you workout today, its actually the meal u ate yesterday that will be use, not your next one :) peace

So true, almost 40 and in the best shape of my life from taking this approach. So many years wasted worrying about a stupid post workout window, brainwashed by supplement companies.

I cant eat anything for at least 5h after workout, the hormonal spike of testosterone and hgh makes me feel super energetic and almost high, if I eat anything right after my workout I feel like CRAP, also I feel that fasting after my workout makes my muscle super sensitive to whatever I ingest afterward, in my opinion as a weight lifter for 23 years, post workout fasting is the best thing one can do to optimise lean mass gain and burn fat

I eat at 5-7pm everyday I work out at 5:45-7AM I only eat the one meal a day and I eat meat until I’m satiated 2300-3500 calories usually of just meat maybe some eggs

Thank you for your insights! It just makes sense to increase you natural GH through workouts and fasting… For someone trying to lose bodyfat it might be a great tool. My goals is to lose 20lb. I will not eat after my evening workouts, if any, high protein and no carbs. Lets see if maximising my GH can make me lose that stubborn bodyfat….Also minimum 10k steps/day. Starting with a fasted morning walk at 7am. How can I sustain this for at least 30 days? No clue yet.. Lets see

My yoga teacher said that you should not race out to eat straight after, but wait an hour or two longer ideally as well as doing the same beforehand as that was traditionally done

I eat 5 hours after my workouts. I eat 9-2. Taking a scoop of BCAA afterwards doesn't doesn't interrupt anything. Never been better!

Great video, really informative. Thank you. I’m reasonably lean and can say that I’ve never lost fat (and kept muscle) as rapidly and effectively as when I fast post workout (resistance training and/or HIIT). I don’t always do it of course, but it’s a great tool. Would definitely recommend to anyone interested.

So can I safely sleep the night after excercising? I don’t want to eat anything before sleep because it has a negative impact on my sleep if I eat close to when I will sleep

Great video. Do you have any thoughts on whether consuming BCAA prior to fasted workouts are beneficial or not? There is a lot of confusion about this. Thank you

There is so much confusion because no one really knows. It depends on your goal. If your goal is to "stay fasted," then I believe BCAA's will break your fast. If you are an intense exerciser and want to keep a relatively high amount of muscle mass (I am in this category), then I opt for actual grass-fed whey protein and pure creatine before my workouts.

Ori Hofmekler (the boss when it comes to IF and making stress work for you) thinks it’s best to wait at least 60 mins or longer for post workout and just to keep it whey protein from grass fed cows.

I think it's good to add post workout fasting to your routine every once in a while. However, it seems from the research that if you go into the workout fasted, which I do, prioritizing a post workout meal within 30-60 min is best for protein synthesis. If you are working out in a fed state, then waiting longer has benefits.

I work out doing primarily calisthenics, air, squats, and push-ups in the morning and then usually don’t eat until about noon or 1 o’clock. Curious… Am I shooting myself in the foot?

super clear content and the slides were great I do OMAD and train with a PT twice a week fasted don't eat my meal for few hours afterwards. For me its natural and am never hungry, years of sugar cravings have practically gone,! :)

Good shit brother. My typical weekday routine, up my 5:30, breakfast of steelcut oatmeal and coffee 6am, workout 12pm, 1 banana and 2 scoops of BSN Syntha 6 with water immediately post workout, dinner 6pm. I want to try this fasting post workout and see the effect on myself. Would it be okay to move the protein shake to breakfast then nothing but water between workout and dinner?

Definitely going to try thing especially bc I have to wait for the crock pot to finish cooking lol. It's just hard to grasp the concept, second guessing alot. Especially bc you see all these bodybuilders and strongmen telling you the opposite. But if you think about it..... After a workout, your body wants to feed and if you have excess body fat is figure it would choose the fat to feed from. Idk maybe I'm going off the deep end.

I intermittent fast (Warrior Diet - I have the book but Id like to know your opinion too) and workout around 12. My main meal is dinner. Is it OK to have a small salad of lettuce, cucumber and tomato slices (no dressing) 1 hour post workout? I like your video cause you explain your reasons.

So I’m wanting to fast between 8pm and 12pm and the best time for me to workout is between 5a and 6:30a. If I do that every day, will that hinder my weight loss goals? You said fasting occasionally after working out is good but what if I do that every day?

As far as what type of protein? Grass-fed whey protein concentrate is my go to, but if I cannot get my hands on that I will do either essential aminos or branched chain amino acids

@@DrMichaelVanits truly very useful to know the benefits of fasting and working out. it makes total sense to me now to maximise your bodys natural GH. Im trying to lose 20lbs of bodyfat and didnt have a clue or plan, as its stubborn af.. I will try no carbs after my evening workout and sleep fasted. And refeed next morning after a fasted walk.. lets see if I can the melting process going. Thanks a lot for this video, might be onto smth here hehe

I think this is all great. But whey protein actually spikes insulin. So if you consume whey post workout, Then you blunt HGH....you thoughts?

I've recommended that in the past, but here is the thing. Do you get all the fasting benefits by taking BCAA's during your fasting window? Probably not. On most days is consuming a healthy protein source following a workout a good idea? That's what research shows. If that isn't feasible, then I would definitely consume BCAA's. Now if you are trying to put on muscle mass and don't need to lose fat, then BCAA's before and after could be a great idea, but I would also through in an occasional fast in there like the video suggests.

Hi Michael, you said in your video it would be beneficial to occasionally have a post workout fast - would it be safe to fast after every workout? I do resistance training 3 times per week and due to my schedule I have to exercise early mornings but my fasting means I cannot eat for 4 hours after my workout. I've only just started fasting but so far it's been fine as I'm eating a keto diet. Just wondering what you would recommend - could this be harmful?

most likely you will be fine because even though you may break down some muscle, the spike in human growth hormone you will get from the fasting and workout will allow your first meal to help in your muscle recovery

General rule: If you are going into a workout fasted, then you should probably prioritize a post workout meal. If you are going into the workout in a fed state, then you can delay that post workout meal at least a few hours.

Hello Dr Mike, thanks a lot for your video. One question: when shall I intake any supplements when doing the fast? Let's say I take some vitamin D, B and some minerals daily. Would you take them when you first eat or right in the morning (without food)? I thought they are better absorbed with food. Thanks for any advice, cheers.

Doc..i m following ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting...eating window being 2 pm to 8 pm. I ecersice every day at 8:30 am for 1 hour. My question is... Would it cause any harm if I sleep for an hour after doing HIIT ?

Whazzzzzz up Dr. Mike.. I’m doing the 16/8 fasting for the last 10 months and have lost 60lbs... I have 2 kids and my time is very limited. My crazy routine is first meal around noon, and last meal around 6pm... I put my son to bed and actually fall asleep for a bit, then get up and hit the gym around 10pm, fill up with water and finally go to sleep. I then get up early with the kids and go til noon before eating. Do you think that’s ok to fast that long after the gym?

Acne is definitely a reflection of what is going on internally in most cases. I would need more info like sex, weight, age, and possibly your hormone lab values

Hey Dr. Michael Van! So I’m 20 years old, 5’7, and typically weigh in between 120-125 pounds. I want to reap as many benefits from Intermittent Fasting and HIIT as I possibly can! I’ve been skinny my entire life and could never gain weight. Which is kind of good cause I want to keep a trim figure but would also like to put on some weight & gain muscle mass. (If the two are possible while following an Intermittent Fasting routine) My goal is to optimize both physiological and brain functioning so that I can be as healthy as I can be! What type of Intermittent Fasting & workout pattern would you recommend I do in order for me to receive as many body and brain benefits as possible? Would you also recommend I start a Ketogenic diet as well? I’m especially passionate about improving Brain function and would be more than willing to disregard gaining weight in order to maximize brain function. My apologies for the long comment and question.. And thank you for all of your videos! Please continue publishing more, your courses are extremely helpful not only to me but others as well!

4-6,would be ideal but in that fasted state after workout your HGH levels are at work.

Really interesting video! Funnily enough my recent regime has changed to mostly taking no carbs before or after but using BCAAs, creatine, Himalayan salt, whey, I'll have one half before and the rest towards the end of my workout. So say if I fast for 4,5,6 hours after this essentially, I'm both maintaining my muscle mass and stimulating the HGH, perhaps the best of both worlds?

Just burned like 500-600 calories. Didn’t eat anything and about to sleep. I don’t want to eat because it’s out of my eating window for intermittent fasting and I’m about to sleep. Usually I can jog on a 16 hour fast and not even feel faint or down or anything. This time feel a little faint but not worried about it. My theory was it would just stimulate me being fasted for a longer period of time but idk. Figure more body recycling about to happen. Get that old crap out. Hopefully this isn’t a bad idea :/ hehehe

What do you think about training and eating big on one day, and then fasting the next day? So about a 36 hour fast. I hear about it from Cole Robinson and will try it this next week.

Yes. Eat big Monday to prep for your Tuesday morning fasted workout then fast after as long as you can. Experiment with what works best for you.

Doc, check your instagram, I left a question on there on the promo post for this video asking about if it’s a good idea to have a lot of fat post workout too or will that slow down protein synthesis? As I live by a ketogenic diet so I was wondering whether the best idea for protein synthesis would be to have high protein low carb and fat and have fats later in the day or Is it good to eat a regular keto style meal after resistance training for optimal muscle growth? An answer to that question would be AMAZING 💪🏻💪🏻

You answerd my exact question - in other Videos they would say fasting after a workout is no problem, if you are not an athlete or a long distance runner - and then they wouldn't go on to explain what to do in these cases... So thanks a lot!

If your goal is to look like Mr. Olympia or Arnold when he was on steroids, this is probably not the channel for you. I find that being lean but muscular is far healthier and way more functional
