Sad that development took precedence over restoration. Almost 400 years of history wiped out in the month of ‘liberating’ Manila. Structures without character but more practical to build replaced the ones that once stood majestically over the city. If the war didn’t destroy Manila, there would have been a lot of beautiful buildings and traditions to experience, instead Mall culture took over where history should have continued to flourish.

The very truth!! It wasnt the enemy who obliterated Manila and the rest of our country, it was our so called ally the U.S.A. Yet they did whatever means possible to stop the Japanese from reaching Australia or chose to liberate Europe first then only after starting a martial plan to rehabilitate the West did they remember to liberate Manila the easiest way by carpet bombings it to smithereens as an after thought. And now they want us to fight the Chinese in another proxy war?

2:38 mentioned the special tariff and privileges for phil reconstruction that had supposedly lasted for 28 years (1946 + 28yrs = 1974). These facts actually were mandated by law called the BELL TRADE ACT (also known as Phil Trade Act of 1946) crafted by US Congress. Then in 1955, the act was repealed by the Laurel-Langley Agreement which expired in 1974. countrystudies.us/philippines/23.htm The parity rights given to us citizens in phil was highly contested, they exploited the phil natural resources that resulted to 50% reduction of forest than it was during the Spanish colonisation. US laws intended for war reconstruction efforts and rehabilitation of phil economy: 1. PHILIPPINE REHABILITATION ACT of 1946 (or Tydings Act): Payment of war damages amounting to US$620 million only (NOT billion$). This total fund is allocated for: *** $100,000,000 worth of surplus property of the US transfered to Phil ownership, such as large quantities of valuable military equipment and supplies received by The Philippine Armed Forces; The Bureau of Telecommunications which was created on October 4, 1947, obtained surplus equipment and supplies from the Surplus Property Commission. The Government Telephone Service, inaugurated on January 15, 1949, obtained practically all its equipment from the US surplus. *** $400,000,000 in payment of private war-damage claims. *** $120,000,000 for the restoration of PUBLIC property. Of this amount, $57,000,000 was alloted to the rehabilitation commission itself for payments of salaries, offices, etc. So, only $63M was spent for reconstruction of damaged PUBLIC properties. The Commission opened its offices in Manila towards the end of 1946, but the public property claim payments did not begin until the later half of 1947. Private property claims started April 1948, the month of President Roxas death. kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1432/today-in-philippine-history-april-30-1946-the-philippine-rehabilitation-act-of-1946-was-approved 2. BELL TRADE ACT or formally Philippine Trade Act of 1946: An act passed by the US Congress specifying the economic conditions governing the emergence of the Republic of the Philippines from U.S. rule. This act tied the Philippine economy to that of the United States. The Bell Act set quotas on Philippine exports to the U.S., pegged the Philippine peso to the U.S. dollar at a rate of 2:1, provided for FREE TRADE (zero tariff rate) between the two countries for 8 years, to be followed by 5% annual tariffs increase for the next 20 years until 1974, and gave "parity rights" to all US citizens residing in the phil (equal rights with Filipinos on exploitation of natural resources, operation of public utilities). digitalcollections.lib.washington.edu/digital/collection/pioneerlife/id/10583 3. LAUREL-LANGLEY AGREEMENT of 1955: This act revised the Bell Trade act of 1946. The treaty took effect on January 1, 1956 and expired in 1974. It abolished the U.S. authority to control the exchange rate of the peso, made parity privileges reciprocal, extended the sugar quota, extended the time period for the reduction of other quotas and for the progressive application of tariffs on Philippine goods exported to the U.S. countrystudies.us/philippines/23.htm kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/582/today-in-philippine-history-september-6-1955-the-laurel-langley-agreement-was-approved-by-both-the-american-and-philippine-governments In 1970 to prepare the economy for the 1974 expiration of Laurel-Langley Agreement, the phil government Central Bank adopted the floating rate method of the peso, hence removed the exchange rate control. From 1974, all the special economic privileges of phil to US were expired. The US then repivoted to China's market access since 1972 (Nixon's visit in Beijing), which also gave the Chinese export privileges to the US, even until today. All the US economic assistance to phil had stopped from 1974, as mandated by US laws. That's why during the late 60's and 70's, to invigorate the economy, the policy was based on the three core of developments: 1) self-sufficiency in agriculture, 2) development of infrastructures and 3) the achievement of fast-track industrialization.

maraming magdi-disagree sa akin pero for me maganda din naging epekto ng 28 years na umiral ang Bell Trade Act (1946) na later on naging Laurel-Langley Agreement (1955). Dahil dyan nagpasok ng madaming investments ang America sa atin during the late 1940s until the late 1960s. Yan ang reason why second to Japan ang Pilipinas during the 1950s until 1960s.
@TimeMakerDotPH
@TimeMakerDotPH Год назад
Kaya naging overdependent tayo sa mga American investments (when in fact marami pang pwedeng pagkunan nito like Japan and Western Europe). Pero kung nag-went ang protectionist na Pilipinas in the post-war period without the Bell Trade Act, ay baka mas lumala pa kondisyon ng mga lolo't lola natin that time. And for that, I thank the Americans since hindi naramdaman ng mga ancestors natin yung mga estupidong policies ng mga protectionist leaders natin (Osmeña, Laurel, Quirino, Garcia, Recto etc.) because may source pa rin tayo ng investment (monopolized nga lang ng Amerika). Ginawa din tayong "golden age" ng Bell Trade Act as a sugar and tobacco exporter to the U.S. but this meant we didn't incentivize in building companies and industrial manufacturing like Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan since yung mga American investors dito, ang target nila, yung agrikultura natin at hindi yung industriya. Dapat talaga ginawa ng Pilipinas in the first place ay hindi na naglagay ng foreign business ownership sa constitution para hindi tayo reliant sa American investments.

Partially true but mostly paradigms set by the Victors which is the West. Go back far in history to when Jspan was considered an isolated hermit kingdom. Portuguese Missionaries were able to have a minor foothold till the Americans under a gunboat diplomacy threatened Japan to open up so are seeing a very familiar scenario here? Years later the Brits were able to modernize Japan by trying to control the emperor but it was the nearest thing to colonizing it because the rest of Southeast Asia including China were all colonies of various Western powers. When Japan still resisted being a colonial puppet, the West imposed a trade embargo to pressure Japan but instead Japan fought back and in the Japan-Russian War defeated the Russians and took over the disputed island territories. It was emboldened to stop the on-going embargo and thus sent a Mission towards its Regional neighbors trying to promote the “Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere” wherein the Asian nations must unite and do away with their western colonial Masters. This move was 2 pronged as it Will rid Asia of Colonial rule and second, Japan Will rid itself of the western embargo using Asian colonies as jump points. The Philippines was one of the nations a diplomatic Mission was approached by Japan. However the Philippines politely declined. China on the otherhand was overtly being colonized by several western powers abd could not be approached. Japan was already desperate to secure much needed raw materials for its growing industries but the embargo and the naval blockades were strangling its life line. The rest is history as Japan was forced to fight its way fir survival and the first thing it did was to clean-off the vestige of western colonial foothold and indctrination in Asia. History is written by the victirs though and Japan is exemplified as the villain. However modern global conflicts very much Shows a repeat in western tactics to start with trade embargos and naval blockades to pressure a country they Focus on to submit to their imposition. What we are seeing now is just a repeat prior to WWII but this time with China.

Private property claims started April 1948, the month of President Roxas death. kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1432/today-in-philippine-history-april-30-1946-the-philippine-rehabilitation-act-of-1946-was-approved

After World War II the Philippines was in good spirits and doing very well. We were slowly but steadily moving forward to catch up with the modern, commercial and industrial world. By the 1950's we were among the top economies in Asia. Things started to turn bad when it became apparent that Marcos wanted to prolong his power and manipulated the congress to change the constitution which provoked and ignited violent protests. The first quarter storm from UP erupted and fanned the fires of rebellion spreading to the tribes who were fighting the mining companies in the mountains of cordilleras and the muslims who were crying for the return of their lands that were taken by big lumber companies. The opportunist Communist NPAs seized the moment and Cordillera became their spring board that catapulted them to spread all over the country. From there it was all down hill. It's a sad thing that today Marcos and Duterte's camp are trying to present a distorted version of history that are spreading all over the the internet fooling all the young people of today. The struggle against Marcos was not about Aquino trying to become president. It was about all of us the free spirited people of that generation. Many others have fought and went to prison from the highest names like senator Diokno to the unknown laborer like Raul Pintoy whose name is not even written in any history books. The may fool the gullible youth of today but they cannot fool me. I know what I saw. I know because I was there.

ambrosiobertodazo Who is to blame why Communism has Spread the Country. Is it because of Cheap labor from Rich local and Foreign Capitalist? Land Grabing by those greedy politicians with Millionaire friends?

@@bluemarshall6180 No my friend. It was a trend in that era after world war II. Communist was not only a problem in the Philippines but all over the world. In asia Communism started in North Korea and attempted to spread to the North. Same thing in Vietnam and China, Laos, Cambodea etc. In the Philippines the Huks who were actually world war II guerilla continued to promote communism very strongly in the mountain areas. But when Magsasay became secretary of Defense the American CIA spear headed a program of winning the hearts and mind which was learned from the situation in China and Korea. And no to promote Ninoy Aquino it was during this time that Ninoy first became known because Ninoy was a journalist who came home from Korea ang CIA sent him to mingle with the HUKs if I remember right the kumander was Luise Tarok. Ninoy became a bridge between Tarok and Magsaysay. This series of incidences led to the surrender of most of the HUKS and to Ninoy Aquino becoming a pro communist advocate but with out promoting armed struggle Aquino joined with Tarok and the Huks to promote land reform and other social justice causes. This association with the communist was later on used by Marcos to silence Aquino when Aquino was charged of rebellion and sedition. At that time that a new brand of communism was born from the remnants of the HUKS and the intellectual UP students and young professionals Aquino was already in jail and was not a main factor in the spread of communism contrary to what you can see in the internet now. Today the propaganda capitalize on the fact that Aquino was convicted in the same military court with Victor Curpos, and Bernabe Buscayno. But Aquino was not arrested with them. Aquino was arrested in the congressional floor together with Senator Diokno, and many others who refused to recognize the new constitution. Most of those arrested where released the same day except those who refused to endorse Marcos constitution and some remain in jail with Aquino, Diokno Mitra etc. Marcos like most dictators of the 70's capitalized on the American fear of the spread of communism and so he assured them that he will fight the communists in the Philippines to death but in return he asked for horrendous amount of military aid which he used to bribe the military with higher pay than most other government employees and with fundings for military programs that was open for corruption to keep the higher ups happy. Marcos himself may not be corrupt but he used corruption to keep his control over people. My sugar cane farming family were mostly Marcos supporters but I joined the anti Marcos movement as a young kid. I have seen some of the minor abuses of the military like pointing a gun for no reason but just because you look suspicion but I have heard from victims of real abuse. In 1986 after Marcos was gone I met other Task Force Detainees of the Philippines and one of which was James Daguman who they say used to be a bright student but he was insane when we listen to him because he was tortured by his captor and detain without charges. It's very sad that today's generation are ungrateful to the sacrifices of real people just because they hated the Aquinos due to a political quarrel between Aquinos son who was not even involve in the movement and was sheltered in a rich home during the dark times. We who are small and unknown have grave despised Duterte for robbing us of our honor and promoting the Marcoses as the hero and all of us are maligne just to bring down his mortal enemy the son of Aquino who was our hero.

Thailand at China were not ruled by westerners but Japan still attacked them. Thailand was saved because they chose to ally with Japan after the Japanese invasion.
