@Los Angeles Man Sure, if Lenoardo Da vinci painted a potato it'd be an above average piece of art. But goddammit it's still be a painting of a potato which is weird.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, North Korea's largest trade partner and foreign aid supplier, North Korea entered a period of food shortage that led to a brutal famine from 1994 to 1998. During this time, anywhere from hundreds of thousands to a couple million people starved to death or died from related causes. North Korea, like it's East Asian neighbors, was a predominantly rice-eating society. However, after the famine, the potato grew in popularity because of how easy it was to grow. Today, the potato is still the most popular source of carbs in North Korea.
@@JohnsonTheSecond Lithuania eats more potatoes than other baltic countries, and is very similar to russia - 1 lithuanian consumes 124kg of potatoes a year, while a Russian consumes 130kg
@Malcolm Hoth It's not Communism. That's the most western stereotype we have about them. According to the North Korean constitution they officially stoped with communism in the 1950's, instead opting to create their own system called "Juche", which embraces literal Monarchism, Ultra-Nationalism, Ultra-Militarism and Self-Reliance. Calling North Korea Communist is the oldest joke in the book that everybody keeps repeating, so it must be now fact if its been repeated a zillion times. Just pure Western Ignorism. Or...the media is fully aware but keeps using it because it triggers politically correct people such as myself.
@@PeoplesProtector Theres nothing Monarchist about it unless you would want to claim that bot Syria and Cuba are also monarchies since a member of the family still controls the nation. Admit it North Korea is just another example of a failed communist state which has to rely upon force and coercion once the initial communist policies do not work.
He's just a fun goofball that loves basketball and potatoes, oh yeah also routine executions, weapons and drugs trafficking and human rights violations

@@thefricking5407 Actually twisted doughnuts are sometimes made with potatoes and given that the song talks about potatoes, I think you're right in that they're specifically talking about twisted doughnuts made with potatoes. (they usually aren't made with potatoes though)

@@Discosaturn the traditional alcohol was rice liquor, but when you're desperate for some inebriating homebrew you'll use whatever starches are available to ferment and distill. potatoes were considered low-status food and thus was much cheaper than rice, so people turned to potato fermentation for their drinking needs
I know that this is propaganda, but I love the message it teaches about finding joy in the smallest and most normal of things like "potato distribution" and living a healthy life.
Propaganda is fantastic, it’ll keep the masses loyal and create a more unified state. Of coarse this is not always the case, but my point still remains true.
Communist regimes strive to make work glorious, no matter how menial. That’s why there are songs for these kinds of work in the propaganda stash. Of course there’s always praise of the Party in the songs, because this is the nature of party communism - the Party is (so they say) the implementer of the communist society. Non-communist societies also have these songs that people sing to keep themselves focused at work. There are probably a lot of “planting rice” songs in Asia.
I love it when they show themselves in full light just trying to persuade you by their own propaganda. Had this moment several times on Quora with China related things... The Russians are a whole different chapter though... (Not to speak about various western interest groups)
"Build many potato farms and live to an old age, have many children and enjoy the pleasures of life" Capitalist music wishes it had such wholesome lyrics.
I like capitalism because of things like video games and movies, but almost every song made in America in the past decade has been pretty garbage. Music used to be inspirational, not just a product to be manufactured and sold.
Everybody be saying North Korea has weird music while America has a song about someone that likes bananas because it's boneless. Edit: Search up "I like Bananas because they had no bones."
The beauty of Best Korea is that this song could very well be from the 1980's, the 1990's or the 2010's. We just don't know; they're all equally possible. And that's what makes this timeless.
To me it was clearly 90s. That's when potato farming had started to successfully mitigate food shortages but it was still new culturally to north Korea. This song is to normalize potatoes while shifting the narative to party stopped famines.
It could be from the 90s, but I think, but there are images in the video which seem to show a recent potato surge. Either way its actually dark stuff if you know the histoey of tatters in the DPRK. They are pushed/grown during times of famine.
The Soviet Union doesn't exist anymore, and China is basically authoritarian capitalist, only communist by name. Which is good, because communism can never and has never worked.
Modern Russia isn't proud of Soviet past. We are constantly told how bad the life in USSR was. How Stalin killed millions. How commies were cruel etc. The core of right-wing and pro-Putin propaganda is "buu Soviet Union bad, Christian Russia good".
@Joe Mama not gonna deny that china sucks, but you do have to admit that china did more to improve the lives of their people than most other nations (economically atleast)
@@barozzi_ Lol, the only people who deny that China is communist are people who are salty about the fact that a communist country replaced the USA as #1 superpower.
>USA >Gay pride As an American, that's complete bullshit. It's only retarded borderline communist liberals that even remotely care about gay people. If anything, it's pride in our military.
I visited North Korea as a tourist in 1988 and then again in 2002. In 2002 one of the North Korean guides explained to me that North Korea was developing the potato as an alternate to rice to attempt to improve its food shortage. I got the impression that the North Korean government was sensitive to this as I never read any reports of this in its official media. This initiative made a lot of sense to me as North Korea is a mountainous country and also quite far north making the cultivation of rice quite difficult. One night my tour group was staying in an hotel in an area known as Chilbo (in the north eastern part of the country close to the Russian border). The restaurant in the hotel served us a meal including small dishes of potatoes cooked in different ways. As tourists we were fed very well despite the country's recent famine. Been from Ireland I told my tour guide how important the potato is in Ireland. I also related to her that Ireland experienced its own famine in the 1840s as a result of potato blight.
Teacher: We're going to Korea. Girls: OOMMGGG!!!!! BTSSSSSSS!!!!! Boys: Edit: To anyone who somehow found this year old comment, don't read the replies, they're not worth your time.
