The greatest part of teaching, 34 years at the elementary level, was not only the opening of the "doors" of understanding but the joy of watching them walk through and disappear into a new world. That's what you've done for me. Thank you Sir, thank you!
_"not only the opening of the "doors" of understanding but the joy of watching them walk through and disappear into a new world"_ - probably the best definition, or description, of what education is all about. Thumb up!
So nice to meet you at the trailhead yesterday. Besides meeting you other highlights included: Showing my bucket of Emerald Road columbia river spuds to others (p.s. found a recipe from Joy of Cooking, JHBretz 1915. It says, "preheat oven to 1725 deg. F, bake spuds, remove and eat when softened."); Overhearing three pre-teen girls say, "That sounds like Nick Zentner. It is him." Then they asking to get their photo with you; meeting dozens on the trail who also know of your work, including two who said, "We saw him in his natural habitat over by Dusty Lake earlier this morning." We love you and give thanks to your outreach. From Battery Fully Charged
Professor - thank you 🙏🏼 for creating the space that has launched this amazing community. l no longer watch mass media television/programming- I watch your videos because in addition to entertaining - they educate and more importantly inspire. You channel is the healthiest place I spend my time - other than my gym. Having discovered your channel I have sought out more videos on the geology on the region where I live. This is wholesome, positive and time-worthy stuff. In the past four years (covid + and perhaps before) the constant negativity and division that has plagued so much of our society has been oppressive . Thanks for reopening my eyes- for reminding me of what is good- and what can be accomplished in working together… for me this was so beautifully demonstrated by the Eugene team - as well as the rest of the groups that worked to add additional elements to the series (Glenn, Sharon & others). Thank you 🙏🏼 for providing this space … it is such a positive environment and experience.
What a lovely treat to wake up to a hike with Nick! You have created a wonderful community here in cyberland, and I am so glad you are able to realize on random hikes like this just what a broad and huge impact you have had on people. Your enthusiasm, knowledge and love for geology have ignited a spark in both old and young and everyone in between. Cheers to you Nick Zentner!
It's not just the way you teach what brings you joy, it's connecting with people and making people connect with each other through common interest. You are an amazing light Nick and it's your spirit which we come back for. Thank you for being you!
I' ve told many people about your videos and find it a great way to share the geology, but I also tell them there's more than that, and it's hard to put into words. You do that beautifully at the end of this video. Thanks Nick.
Persons such as yourself make want to keep learning about the world around me . As someone who barely graduated hs , that is a big deal . Thank you from Franklin , Wi .
Aww...💙✨Awesome weekend! 💗Nick, you made my day this morning!!😄✨ You got a magic 🎶 your Hands and voice to connect people, what can I say?!💞You gotta love it, thanks Nick!!😘💗✨
This was lovely, Nick. Those basalt columns never cease to amaze me. As for your final remarks, about how those people lingered after your departure to further share their thoughts....that is beautiful. How the wonders of Mother Earth bring people together. And you are the catalyst. Strong work.
I was browsing the comments, and people said you made them cry at the end. Then I watched it. (Wipes away tears of happiness) Thanks for everything you do.
I think we are all looking for that solitude to be able to do just that Mr. Zentner, You and all who have been associated with your series have changed more than can really be explained. Its your thirst to share all of this with us, is what intrigues all of us the most! Thank You Nick and I am looking forward to meeting you on the trail .......
Nick, enjoying the humanity in ourselves with others is what we feel as the real benefits of socializing with others without a dog eat dog attitude. I must say a thank you for saying what you said at the end of this video. The goodness in you shows. You often mention the uniqueness of Bretz, however, there is a similar special quality in you that comes through besides your eagerness to share what you know and that passion you have when you do so. We can see the sincerity through your voice and facial expressions. So, again, thank you!
Nick, You have been a huge part of bringing Geology to the forefront of a lot of people’s minds. I have spent a lot of time over in several of the areas you have done videos on and used to wonder how on earth was this formed! 😂 I hope you can take the time and visit us at the Gold and rockhounding show in Cashmere on April 13 th and 14 th. Thanks for making a difference for so many of us!
So good to see you out on one of your hikes again, after a long winter. I’m also looking forward to mor “Nick on the Rocks,” and, especially the upcoming series of public lectures. We will be on the road, looking for a place with clear weather to see the Eclipse. Thanks for all you do!
Hey Nick, From a fellow 63 yo, born and raised Wisconsin boy.. Thank you so much for bringing awareness to the earth around us. It's fascinating and amazing. You're correct, Sir. We have much more in common than the little things that separate us. God speed.. Go Badgers
Brought the AtoZ series to life, rellay in every way. The visuals, the narrative, the connection we share. Words there are, feelings of love and joy, "thank you" seems trivial,. Who can I share with remains.
Nice to see two hopeful signs of spring. You were out hiking Saturday while on the other side of the Rockies our first crocuses emerged in Alberta. The White Witch Jadis’ power is beginning to crumble!
You said fishing is not my jones, and my head immediately started singing "I got a basketball jones oh baby oo-oo-oo." And it's going to be rolling around in there all damn day (sorry Patrick). PS - The end of the video was the best part. Thanks for that.
@@Fred_Lougee I knew it pre-dated SNL by a bunch of years, but like Larry, I thought they also performed it on that show. But we both are plagued by faulty memories, lol! Yes, it's still rolling in this old brain of mine, but I also had to...so I pulled it up and listened to it again (and laughed again).
@@ksea9146 Probably 14 the first time I heard it. A friend had several of their albums. When Tommy said "...the East Westchester North Stars, champions of the Southern Conference..." I lost it.
What Nick didn't realize is that about half the people hiking around were various levels of zentnerds looking to see a coulie up close on a fine spring day.
I'm planning to make it to at least _one_ of the lectures. Half the fun is the lecture itself, the other half is meeting and greeting Zentnerds who up to that point were a YT Chat handle, and now I can put a face to the name. I attended last year and it was worth the travel time and $ spent.
Born and raised in Washington State. Spent a lot of time in eastern Washington hiking and fishing. In all my time I came across a rattle snake by accident twice.
29 years as a classroom teacher and the last 14 as a high school administrator have given me exactly what you just described, Nick! Thanks for your videos!
Sharing your knowledge only increases happiness. As all should do! Getting ready to embark on my retirement chapter- shall be seeking the Zentner wisdom on the trail. I do Jones for pescados!
NICK, YOU HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR LIVES. i LOVE LISTENING AND LEARNING ABOUT Washington GEOLOGY. i LIVE IN WENATCHEE, YOUR VIDIOS ABOUT OUR AREA HAVE MADE ME LOOK AT THE GEOLOGY A WHOLE LOT DIFFERENCT. THANK YOU NICK.
Always nice to see a body of blue water, birds, wildlife. What a beautiful morning..and the Baker iceage flood submersion with lovely bonus story thoughts.
Thanks for taking us along on your scouting mission. I look forward to seeing it and all your content. You spoke of recognizing voices I’m sure I would recognize your voice as well as Atwater,Baker,Bjornstad,Cooley all the way to Zentner. Geologists A to Z. I can’t list them all. Great job and thanks again.
It's sweet that you're so humble that you might suggest that we will want you to 'shut up' so that we can 'enjoy the place'.. We watch because we want to hear you, because you're knowledgeable and kind, in ways that most people are not. You could talk about weaving, weather, or some other thing that starts with w, and I bet that most of us would enjoy it just as much. Please do not change a thing, but every time you're self-deprecating, know that I and others love you and all the work you're doing.
Sometimes we see the impact of our craft and sometimes we don’t. I’m glad you did. It’s a great moment for them and you❤ Thanks for the trail recommendation. My son (2024 fall CWU new student) and I made it as far as Vantage. I’ll be hiking that trail soon enough! I’m trying to wrap up all the trails in Canyon first. Thanks for all you do 🙏🏼
Thank you Nick. You've brought a lot of people together through their love of our Channeled Scabland Geology. A love I didn't even know I had until I started watching your videos. I've seen all of your Geology 101 videos, and most of your On The Rocks and Back Yard videos. Not to mention your large group presentations in an auditorium. I've spent several days last summer travelling from Liberty Lake to the scablands taking pictures. I plan on doing it again this summer. Again, thank you for educating us through you videos.
Yes Nick there are other RU-vidrs like you and Itchy boots is one that I call ambassadors to our troubled world. I love RU-vid for the many creators that have brought many people together in small community's that would probable never made a connection otherwise. Thank you for what you and others do.
Hey Nick! My wife and I had to get out and enjoy the sunshine last Saturday too! We did Rattlesnake Ledge, and boy was it busy! Amazing views! We plan to get out to Eastern Washington later in the Spring and Summer, and we will add Potholes Coulee to our list of hikes!
Good morning, Nick. Nice walk c beautiful scenery and a bald eagle with excellent timing. I was wondering where the birds were. Good to hear from you. Thank you.
Thank you, Nick. I felt I was there walking with you in that beautiful place, though I am enjoying this gorgeous blue sky day, temp. about 60F, here in southern Alberta. Love your videos and the bits of geology I pick up. At 74, I never stop learning.
I have watched many of your videos and many of your lectures and I have also ever since the 1980s when I found upper goose Lake and went cliff diving with friends of mine from Moses Lake. I have been absolutely fascinated with the formation of this incredible area and you have answered so many questions for me and I just wanted to tell you thank you from the bottom of my heart, much love from all of us here in Kennewick Washington Washington state on the mighty Columbia River. Our arms are forever wrapped around you brother.
I did some surf photography back in the day. This scene reminds me of a Rip tide on the coastline. Dangerously fast and strong. Thanks Nick! Great walkabout
Thanks.. everyday I am reminded of our responsibility to acknowledge ourselves as part of the human family. We do not travel alone on this journey. When the paths cross, the bond is made, and from that love is our call. thanks again and now back to the darn floods!
Thanks so much, Nick! Will be heading there for a hike in the next month. My wife and I spent a few hours in Frenchman Coulee on a sunny day last month! Never stop sharing your passion for E Wash. Geology!
I was there 45 years ago as a boy scout for opening day of fishing season. On the trail across the talus slope there are large round boulders. The boulders are flaking off these razor sharp slices. It's easy to cut yourself with them. But if you throw one into the lake from the talus slope edge down, it will bounce back out of the water. Boy scout activities. I also recall hiking around the coulees there in the afternoon. It's a great place.
How wonderful to be such a catalyst for friendships made on the trail. , That moment, looking back as you drove off and on towards your next ""sharedventure"", brought an emotional lump to my throat Prof. A good man paused and made time this way making a difference inside others. ""Adventures in Contentment"". Ray Stannard Baker wrote under his pen name David Grason, He surely would have enjoyed meeting you on his delightful journey... and Thank you. Kind regards Keith. Drakensberg Mountains. South Africa. PS,, I had my whole mind map of Washington upturned by your vistas!
❤❤❤❤❤ love you Nick! Oh...and I haven't been able to watch the snake video with Adrian. I'm not afraid of snakes but I was afraid for you guys. Thanks for trekking at Pots Coulee!! Verily enjoyed hanging out with you!!
FYI: Early spring is the perfect season to go camp and explore Potholes Coulee/Ancient Lakes, which is a magical place to a Floodie :-). The chill keeps the rattlesnakes and ticks at bay ... and spring ephemerals are blooming in E WA. It's easiest to car camp at Quincy lakes. Thank you for the fresh Potholes Coulee video, Nick!
Wonderful video. It's such an amazing place. Thank you for taking us there and explaining so well how this special place came about. Lucky folks to bump into you in the parking lot!
I Just finished watching this Video The best part and I mean the best PART was after you said goodbye Then you recorded a little bit more You started talking about people who recognize your voice in the parking lot The connection that you made with them and the connection of these people made with each other I started to tear up I fully realize how people out coming together in this community you have started We come from all walks of life we live in different places This is a special place you are responsible for that. There aren’t very many people who can do what you do Thank you
Thanks, Nick for a different view of the Ancient Lakes Coulee. This is such a beautiful area that's often overlooked. My husband and I took the lower Ancient Lakes trailhead and went past Dusty Lake down to the Columbia, then North up through Potholes Coulee past Babcock Bench 2 weeks ago on March 16th (the day before you posted this video). There are SO many trails through here that you could go on a different one every day for several weeks and not hit the same loop trail twice. On a side note, anyone parking at the Dusty Lakes Trailhead will need a Discover Pass to park their car there for the duration of the hike/trip.
Our family was camping at Corral Lake there in the late 60s. We went to sleep ten feet from the water. In the morning the shore was about 40 feet away, and the lake had dropped almost 20 feet total depth. A sinkhole in the lake had opened overnight.
Wonderful scenery and colours .. like Idaho and Utah (Shawn's stomping ground), it would have fascinated the 19th century French painters such as Monet. My brain says that trip would once have been an easy hike for me; unfortunately my body is no longer up to it so thanks, Nick, for still allowing me to get out in the wild while enjoying the comfort of my armchair.
I've been going to the Pot Holes Coulees since the 1980's. I've hiked many, many miles and don't get tired of it.. I'm 78 now and still have no trouble getting around. I find the Ancient Lakes side (north side) more interesting than Dusty Lake, especially on top, before descending to the coulee floor and at the west end where it drops down to the Columbia. There's also the waterfall there that seems to attract people. There are snakes in the coulees, certainly, but the northern rattler is shy and if you do see one it will most likely catch your eye because it's moving away from you. I can only remember one that felt the need to warn me off by rattling.
And that Nick is why "we" are here. To bring us together...to help each progress in life. Maybe it's how we folks from around the world can realize that is why we exist.
Bruuuhhhh there is NOTHING like the aroma of petrichor out in the desert like this after a quick hit of rain after sitting there drying up in the heat for months.
