Poundland Wi-Fi smart plug socket setup & review

In this video I unbox and setup on a Poundland ultrabrite branded smart plug (for only £7). One important thing to note is it you have to do the set-up process on the 2.4 ghz WiFi band and not the 5ghz, (just for the set-up process). So it might be worth investigating how to connect to the 2.4ghz on your phone and rooter first.

Glad I watched this video. Saw these in Poundland a while ago but didn’t buy any. Will buy some now. 👍🏻👍🏻

I managed to get a couple of these plugs. Connected first time, and that was a first for me. App was very familiar with another one I have, Alexa even has an ultabrite Skill. Wish I’d bought more! £5 is so cheap.

These are now retailing for £3 at Poundland. Bloody fantastic value, frankly. Ever since Poundland stopped being just £1 it's tech section has genuinely gone from last-resort crap to bloody marvellous ultra-bang-for-buck-value masterpieces! Edit: Also, your censorship of "Hey G**gle" is highly appreciated; albeit you still set off my Alexa when you said her name earlier 😂 Maybe say A-L-E-X-A in the future? Great video :)

I know if £3 is a an absolute bargain for a smart plug! I actually bought some more, just to take a part for spare parts. Maybe I should do a tear down video so you can see what's on the inside of these. I do tend to take the hey G**gle and Alex* out these days, but I am sorry for that 😉👍

@@MyProjectBoxChannel A teardown would be much appreciated! Despite being a pretty hardcore tech enthusiast, I own a lot of stuff from Poundland these days... honestly, I mean their Overdrive gaming series has one of the best mice I've ever used, absolutely fantastic IEMs, the Viido branded (not generic Mobitek) cables are bloody fantastic for £2.50... who knows what they're gonna come up with next. By 2024 Poundland will probably be selling £25 Teslas :D

I've been investigating one of these over the last couple of days. The WiFi SOC used is the same as in the bulb but the module (TYWE2S) offers more pins. Interestingly, it looks like there are a GPIO line and a 0-1v ADC line that are going spare at the module edge, though I've not properly traced things out yet to make sure there isn't anything using them. My goal was to be able to use it with purely local hardware. As supplied the product appears to be controlled via a cloud connection (this may be why using three lamps in the same fitting was unreliable,) and I wanted to be able to control it in case of outside connectivity loss or in an isolated network. The casing appears to have been ultrasonically welded but it only needed medium brutality spudging to open. Unfortunately the UART pins are inboard and underside, so you'll want a whole lot of flux and the beefiest iron you have to desolder the mains pins and extract the board. I was able to flash it with Tasmota firmware through the UART pins on the module - I used an external 3.3V supply and pulled the IO0 test point on the module low for a few seconds when applying power to enter flash mode and used esptool to flash the device. For some reason the SOC wouldn't boot at all when connected to my PL2303, so I had to use an old Pi for the job. I've yet to test with ESPHome. That will have to wait for me to buy another and regain the will to live.

I pulled one of these apart purely for the relay board and power supply. (5v and 3.3v) One of my projects needed a relay board and a 5 volt power supply, so I just removed the Wi-Fi module. (And kept it for a future project.) Not bad for £7😉. I just dremel around the plug pins to liberate them. I have a video on what I did with the relay board. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EyrakKOR5tI.html

@@MyProjectBoxChannel Yeah, I bought the first to see if I could de-cloud it and do fun things under local control. It was a very nice surprise to find that the insides were two independently useful modules. Being able to squeeze in something on 1wire is a nice bonus.

Thanks again for the video I have now purchased three of the smart plugs but want to use one in my workshop, but the range is just on the edge of my Wi-Fi, so I want to add an aerial to it, how do I take it apart?? Please thank Bob
@MyProjectBoxChannel
@MyProjectBoxChannel 2 года назад
It is possible to take it apart, however it's most likely going to be a little bit destructive to the casing. But if you don't mind the screwdriver marks then that's fine I guess. It's kind of glued together. So you have to run a screwdriver on the plug prongs side. You have a seam that you can just about jam a small screwdriver in (obviously you will stab your own hand in the process and liberate the blood from it 🤣). If you lucky you can force it apart without breaking it too much. There is a small upright WiFi module inside, soldered to the main PCB. The Wi-Fi module has a onboard PCB antenna. You could probably tap into that antenna somehow. Why don't you get a cheap Wi-Fi repeater/ access point, for your workshop. Surely it will be handy to have Wi-Fi in there. You could get one of those power line Wi-Fi extenders, or run a CAT5 cable down there.

Any concerns about the app permissions? I see other similar devices on Amazon are criticised for the invasion of privacy of data so wondered what you felt about the risk of these devices. The Ultrabrite one is now only £5 which seems a bargain if it works well versus other brands subject to the security issue. Thanks.
@MyProjectBoxChannel
@MyProjectBoxChannel 2 года назад
Once you have used the app to set up your smart bulb, and your login details have been used to add it to Amazon Alexa or Google home. You can then delete the app from your phone. As Google home and Alexa use the cloud service to activate the smart bulb. The app is effectively only necessary to set up the bulb in the first place.
@GBApollo17
@GBApollo17 2 года назад
@@MyProjectBoxChannel Thanks, that was the response I saw to others on Amazon which is fine unless you do wish to use the app remotely or to make changes of course. I suppose you could just disable the app until you need it then re-enable as your account should still be there to log back into. But then these days we all have so much data out there maybe the likelyhood of it being shared - which the other device permissions included reference to - is pretty unlikely to result in particularly questionable results. He says optimisticly!

thanks for this video. i saw these at local Poundland for £5 each ...slightly off topic... i bought some TCP bulbs from Wilko which i operate from my phone (Android) . Id like to operate by voice control... I assume you did this from phone 'ok google' and not a google speaker /mic home device... my question ...I have an Amazon Fire Stick HD where you hold button to speak to Alexa ... how do I / can I ?....use the Fire Stick remote mic to operate these TCP ( and Ult-Brite wifi plugs) ...and if so how? I dont want to have to buy an Echo speaker thing if I dont need to ... but it looks like its easier just to use 'OK Google' from my phone yes? ( just use google and forget about Alexa?)
@MyProjectBoxChannel
@MyProjectBoxChannel 2 года назад
You can use both "OK Google" on your Phone, and Alexa on the fire TV stick remote, at the same time. Just add the account details from whatever app you used to setup your smart devices. Then add those account details to Alexa app on your phone and Google home too.

I initially had the same problem. It turned out it wouldn't connect to the very elderly access point I was using but would with another. After changing the firmware to Tasmota it connects to the originally awkward AP without issue, so it doesn't appear to be a hardware problem in my case. When the device fails to connect the app offers an alternate pairing mode. In this case it creates a wireless network that you connect to. If you can connect to it directly but not through your chosen network the odds are that it doesn't like the network for some mystery reason.
