Loved the video great idea in testing the paint performance difference of wet v powder, just shows how alloy wheel chemical cleaners will attack wet painted alloys very easily compared to powder coating, Julian @ Powder FX.

Thanks for the explanation, basically what you’re saying is that powder coating is tougher, BUT if someone brushes acid on my wheels I need a refurb regardless, if someone blow torches my wheels I need a refurb (and tyres 😂) regardless, if someone knives my wheels I need a refurb regardless and if I kerb the wheels I need a refurb regardless. I’m not against powder coating and have done it many times but I would have focused more on the longevity and devised an accurate test that shows no damage to the powder coated wheel but ultimately they are soft metal and regardless of the finish, if you touch a kerb they’re done.

Excluding 100% show wheels, powder coat for sure. It doesn't look quite as good but the durability really is on another level.

I don't know if paint stripper is an acid you will see in the real world sometimes like battery acid would be a more realistic thing because if you get paint stripper on your wheels it's probably all over your painted care too unless you have a DeLorean and the same for the fire if you wheels are in a fire you have bigger concerns

If you think about the applications in real life. With the painted wheels you've literally got 1 life, once they're scratched, it sticks out like a sore thumb and you're through to metal, it's softer so the gash is deeper. With powder coated wheels, they're far harder to scratch through to metal so if you did the exact same damage, in real life, your probably not going to see metal. Not to mention if you got your tyres changed, they're going to get scratches if they're regular paint. I've got loads of experience with both.

Unless powders have come along way ok the past 10 years it doesn’t hold up to the sun well. I had my hitch powder coated by a reputable company and it’s very dull and it only took about 3-4 years before that happened.

Ok, I think that this proves that powder coating is not significantly better than painting them, because regardless of the powder coating they were still damaged and would need to be repaired not unlike painted wheels. Sure the powder coating is slightly more resistant but they still got damages, so either way you have to be careful not to scratch your wheels and if you do you would need them repaired. And the odds of you getting acid or an open flame on the wheels is pretty low honestly, and you would still need them repaired if they were powder coated...

I expected the powder coat to win but as soon as either powder coat or paint is damaged then it’s damaged and needs repaired. It’s a lot more involved to repair the power coating as it is to repair the paint I’m assuming of course. But as it’s easier to get someone to repaint the damaged wheel is it cost effective.

You could hide your bias for the powder coat a little better.

Clear coat with a quality 2k urathane next time instead of laquar. I am sure the powder coat will still win but the paint will do much better.

It's crazy how durable powder coat is compared to paint. The paint is suffering while the powdercoat is like.. hold my beer!

The thicker the coating the more likely it is to chip when a rock hits it. Also 6-12 months for a painted wheel finish? The fuck are you painting it with? Lol

Also, the paint is solvent-based. And the powder coat is polyethylene-based. Polyethylene can contain solvent as well as acids. Your tests are inconclusive because you’re not testing properly. Tried touching that powder coat with a bunch of heat and it will boil and burn right off. Just take the paint. But you are not testing properly solvent-based and polyethylene would be heat best to break it down.

Pointless. First of all had you left them long enough to fully cure? Secondly, this test is basically a clear coat test, nothing more and nothing less, the base coat is irrelevant here. I have expensive clear coats for alloy motorcycle tanks that would mug any of these finishes in every test you done. My last point is that you showed the material thickness as if 0.3mm was the standard for spray painting? You could easily build that up with even flowcoats so I'm not sure what you were trying to show or prove by that. I could have spanked both of these in every test you done with only an acid etch prime, then a 2pack single stage boat epoxy in a simmilar black. Been doing this 4 decades now and do mostly custom freehand on the lorries and boats these days. I'll be by far the most experienced person on here.
