The self control Jimmy has is impressive, i mean to never have used his ability to shoot lightning against Chuck, truly astounding self control

In the pilot episode, Jimmy goes into HHM and does an impression of Ned Beatty from the movie Network, where he shouts dramatically and waves his arms around in a mockery of Howard and the partners at HHM. Now he has sincerely become the thing he mocked.

Notice that in the bond hearing Jimmy is specifically hearing Chuck's typewriter.

Normally it’s difficult to build real tension or stakes in a prequel. You know where the characters end up. BCS brilliantly uses our knowledge of the future against us. Kim isn’t there in Breaking Bad. It’s terrifying. Everything feels heightened, more dangerous, we can’t let ourselves feel safe or comfortable because we know she’s not there.

Peter Gould said in one of his interviews that when they were brainstorming this show, the question he asked and always came back to was "what problem does being Saul Goodman solve?" Jimmy is such a rich character and even when he's doing wild, unimaginable things, you understand why.

Tyler, it's a real breath of fresh air to see someone react who truly understands the art of storytelling from an actor's and writer's perspective. Your analysis of subtext is so insightful and spot on. Wish we had more folks like you at USC film school when I was there. Been shotgunning all of your content the last few weeks. Would love to see you cover True Detective (Season 01), Chernobyl, Mad Men, Sopranos, The Wire, and FireFly. If you want to capitalize on an upcoming show I HIGHLY recommend Arcane. Season 02 drops on Netflix in November. The storytelling in that show and animation from Fortiche is so moving and breathtaking. It actually made me feel something. I appreciate how much effort you put into these videos. Keep the content coming, brotha. Cheers, from across the pond!

This episode and onwards is probably my favourite portion of the show. Jimmys speech feels exactly the same as Walts "I am the danger" speech, especially the little "hmm that made me sound pretty stupid" expression at the end.

I think I’m just repeating myself here, but thank you for not making Jimmy into a black and white character in your analysis. At this point in the show, it’s like most other reactors (I hate to call you that, because you’re so much more lmao) suddenly forget all 5 seasons of character progression and trauma, and just straight up demonise him. They start parroting Chuck. They call him Saul and never Jimmy (you pointed it out here: Jimmy is still there - this ain’t Breaking Bad lol). Anyway, I don’t know where I’m going with this, but your take is nuanced as always, and refreshing. Even in this scene at the end, in which Jimmy has completely lost it and is taking it out on a man that does not deserve it, you point out that it comes from a place of insecurity. Exactly!!!! God, I love listening to your analysis, it’s like a drug. Until next time. ✌️💛

I feel like you can draw a connection between Jimmy's line here of "You kill my brother and you say you're sorry?" and Chuck telling Jimmy in "Lantern" to stop apologizing for hurting people and just accept that's who he is. Jimmy clearly is projecting a lot onto Howard here (which I think Howard recognizes, even if he doesn't know why), and a huge part of that is blaming him for Chuck's death and then getting angry when Howard shows remorse about that and tries to show Jimmy kindness. Deep down, Jimmy must fear that Chuck was right, that it doesn't matter how sorry he feels about the insurance and Chuck's death, that feeling sorry is meaningless and he's ontologically incapable of doing anything but hurting others (reinforced by seeing how his actions in the courtroom hurt the family of Lalo's victim). So he turns his anger on Howard and tries to make himself out to be above it all, acting like he's proud of the other 'worlds' he 'travels in' and the things he's doing for the cartel. But that doesn't help. It just makes him look (and feel) sad and pathetic and small.

You nailed it! I love how Howard noticing his pain triggers him so much. I think you can tell in the acting of that moment that, for the briefest second, Jimmy is either gonna break into tears or lash out - I guess he excels at making the wrong choice. 😂

Jimmy's burst at the end once again shows Jimmy's insecurity rooted in the trauma from the likes of Chuck and Kevin looking down on him. Also it shows a level of jealousy with Howard coming to terms with Chuck's death and his responsibility for it while he hasn't.

Again, another episode with a collection of really excellent character-developing scenes. Kim standing up to Kevin, Gus giving Schuler the pep talk, Lalo offering Saul an opportunity to be an "amigo del cartel", and finally that Jimmy/Howard scene at the end. Howard made me tear up the way he was addressing Jimmy's antics and showing an extraordinary amount of empathy given what he had been put through.

For all of his flaws and mistakes I do truly think Howard is a good man. Oh boy the next episode is a real milestone and I would wager most fans place it in their top 5 episodes of the series. It’s gonna be great.
