Tone, this is AMAZING information, and super needed. Thank you for disclosing this, this is great info for upcoming techs, to use this the safe way. Thanks for all you do, keep it up!
Thank you very much. I actually broke down and bought the newest Power Probe, the Maestro. It has graphing capabilities and I do not own my own scope so this will give me an ability I do not currently have. The shops I work at always have a scope but none of my own. Once I get a chance to really test out the new Power Probe I will be making a video with that one. Thank you for watching.
Thank you very much for that, I appreciate you watching. Yeah got to be careful and know what you are doing with a power probe, very powerful tool. Now I am working with the new Power Probe Maestro and once I get more use with it will have a video on how to use it and the many useful functions it has.
Really good info, I'm rolling a power probe 3 still never upgraded since it works so well. Your right about the fuel and spark once you get there just get a scope you get much better data readings. I've done made a mess of stuff with a power probe over the years. It's a tool to take your time with
Omg me to, I have chased my tail going down the wrong path trusting the power probe like it was a scope. That is exactly why I made this video, so others don't have to learn the hard way.
That was the best information on power probe uses I have seen on the internet (and I have watched many). Also very nice tip on using multimeter test leads. Good job!!!
Thank you very much. I am currently using the new Power Probe Maestro, once I get the hang of it I will make a new video with that one. Thanks for watching.
Power probe is a bloody good tool back in 2017. I bought the power probe IV and I used it to diagnose fuel injectors here in Australia on a 5.4KL ford three valve v8 I pad 360 for the kit and found the injector fixed the issue for free and to buy those are 350 each for a Bosch injector, and there’s eight of them and people were saying just change all 8 Paid for itself the first time
thanks for the great video! I especially appreciate you taking the time to warn people that this is not a toy and you can't just go poking around saying, oh let's see what this does! that said I just bought one and I am looking forward to learning how to properly help with diagnostics
I agree with you on keeping the Power Probe 3. The 4 has a weird delay on it. A friend had the 4 & I borrowed it, I didn't care for that delay. He sold the 4 & bought another 3. When my 3 died I bought another one. It is definitely the better of the two probes. Awesome vid brotha! 👍👍
Your presentation is 2 years old but I'm glad that I watched it and read some of the comments. I was seriously considering the Maestro because I don't have a scope or my Power P anymore. I would have gone with the 4 model too until I read about someone finding a delay on that model. I never noticed a delay on the demo vids that I have seen but I will definitely rewatch them for verification. My vision isn't all that great anymore so I thought that the larger screens would be helpful. With the Maestro's ability to stream to my cell or laptop, I was looking forward to recording and watching the readings on an even bigger screen. I will be watching your follow-up videos momentarily. Keep up the good work.
You are very welcome. I have recently got the new Power Probe Maestro, I am using it so I can come out with a video on that one. Thank you for watching.
Very Very true, I wish I had all of these resources available to me back in the day like the RU-vid and Instagram community. Thank you for the comment and for watching.
I needed to have my power probe repaired for an intermittent connecting issue and power probe told me how to open it and to check the solder joint inside, sure enough it was bad, resoldered and all good.
Sweet let me know how the ez is. I just bought a new power probe 3. Monday got a new video dropping about why my power probe was making funky noise in a previous video. Thanks for watching and the comment. Going live tonight around 630pm pacific time or 7 not sure check me out.
Good info... Thanks. To comment on testing the starter with a meter while cranking it, The Starter Motor will draw the battery voltage down to 11 or even 10 volts because, if you drag 250 cranking amps out of a battery while turning the engine over, You Will See a Voltage Drop and every vehicle will show different results for all the reasons... Simple OHMS Law. The car battery is not an unlimited source of steady voltage and current so the battery Voltage will drop under load. Even a brand new one. The meter will display exactly that. I think the refresh rate of this meter is fast enough to display starter voltage in very real time and if you see 9 volts while cranking, It's probably a weak battery OR a dragging starter. IDK, Check it out with scope, or a Load Tester...
@@fixitallpaul4847 I took an electrical class and the instructor recommended clear nail polish because it won't dry out like liquid tape does. So that is what I use.
@@OneMechanic I would prefer colored polish so its obvious something has been done there. Clear is great for touching up clear coat on rims. Since its available in any color it has lots of uses in the shop.
Good points Bro I agree don't uses the power prove as a multimeter or Uscope and Uscopes are for injector pulse as well as square wave signals for abs signals
There is a switch cover that goes over the rocker switch that will allow you to latch it to 12volts or to ground. It clips on the Power Probe over the rocker switch. Push up for 12 volts or down for ground.
Unbelievable, I've been using welding clamps for years to latch circuits with the probe. I work on tractor trailers and always need to hold a circuit. THANK YOU !!!
I actually do not have the power probe 4. I did get the power probe maestro a few months ago and will be doing one on that one. Thank you for watching.
heres a tip for checking max voltage with a multi meter when it fluxuates rapidly,, hit the MAX HOLD BUTTON it will display the highest voltage that went thru the meter/.
Excellent video. I just bought the knockoff for $25 for diy. I really hope others don't try injecting current into the low voltage control circuits...that would be a crying shame.
Very true, the power probe is a very useful powerful tool if not used correctly then irreversible damage may occur. It's called letting the smoke out of the box. Thanks for watching.
omg I still have the pp1 or 2 cant remember which one, it is in my garage I just found it the other day. Tested my sons car with it. LOL Thanks for watching.
Only just found you ! and you what a great presentation hope you can help ?? Just purchased a pp3 carbon fibre version however my version has it long lead connected those shorted leads and the connectors be purchased separately !! And did not know mind was going to permanently !!! Can be shortened leaving the longer length for the outside !! Thanks for making video entertaining and make sense cheers BRIAN
Just found this channel. Love the Power Probe - I have a red III and it has pretty much replaced my volt meter. Can't remember the last electrical fault that I needed a meter. And I used to be someone that grabed the Fluke and wouldn't touch the old probes with a little light bulb in it. My only question, would the IV be worth it....
Well first I would like to say thank you for watching. Every power probe has a new feature. I am currently working with the Maestro, I am hoping to make a video in the future on it. If you ever have any questions hit me up on Instagram.
Pretty powerful tool. Before I got to Cal Tech James fried a pcm with one, applied power to the wrong circuit. When I bought mine Brent had to explain to me the importance of powering the proper wire.
I have a bmw z3. 2000 model. DSC light is on, signaling DSC is de activated.. took the car to a shop, said right rear wheel speed sensor was bad.. repplaced it,, DSC is still disabled, but check engine light went off, no codes stored. disconnected battery for 10 minutes, then reconnected and drove car abt 3 miles, Hoping computer would reset the DSC,, no bueno. im wondering if I have to drive it longer to get the computer to reset or theres another issue,, I cleaned all of my reluctor wheels, cleaned them, tested the other wheel sensors all good.. I bought the connector plug that hooks to the bmw brake module under the hood, but my autel scanner wont go into the abs or dsc system. do I need to take it back to the shop and have the computer reset with a higher end scanner? thanks
If the shop diagnosed it and did the work then yes take it back, if you did the work then you are on the hook for it and may need to evaluate what you want to spend on it.
If you can't hook to vehicle power you just need to hook the ground up to complete the circuit. Where did you get that need of nails clip? That would be really helpful.
Good job man I have powerbrobe like yours but i dont know which version but it doesn't have long tip accessory and you cant attach voltmeter lead any way i didnt use it since new ,my ppan was to use it to power fuel pump when its failed in diagnostic but yu said its a big no 😮 by the way i like your necklace, I'll buy one but is there a name for this design so I can ask the jewelry shop to give me one like yours 😅
So the version I have is the power probe 3 so maybe you have a power probe 2. Not sure have not used that one for a long time. You can use the power probe to power components like fuel pumps, cooling fans and such however you need to make sure you know exactly what you are doing so you do not fry any computers. It is better to disconnect the connector before doing so to be safe. As for my necklace I got it over 10 years ago at Kohls for Fathers Day, It is stainless steel and that is all the info I have on it sorry. Message me on Instagram if you need anymore help. Thanks for watching.
So when you say you have to have it attached to the vehicle, will it work if I have it connected to a 110 to 12-volt AC DC converter to test electrical 12 volt components in my house. Like bulbs, fans or anything else 12 volt?
I'm not really sure but I don't think things in the house are 12volt. Basically what I meant is if you are testing a vehicle the power probe has to be connected to the battery that is connected to the electrical you are testing.
@@NutsandBoltswithTone I am positive things in the house are not troubled I mean tiny electrical devices like 12 volt vans lights or any circuit that's 12 volt I know not necessarily everything will be 12 volt in the house I mean small computer fans and accessories like that
@@NutsandBoltswithTone I've been watching a lot of videos on this and it looks like it should work. Just using a normal 12 volt source checking LED bulbs and whatnot.
Yes you can apply power or ground to actuate components. It does not check continuity. Be very careful about where you apply power and ground, you can fry computers if your not careful.
You can isolate a circuit from a computer or module and use the power and ground to check for continuity… just be careful where you place the ground …..
No the power probe will be powered from the battery. Now if you are checking fuses or something that requires the power to be on then yes. A bad fuse wont show if it doesn't have power. Thank you for watching.
Of course it has to be hooked up to the vehicle battery to work correctly. You wouldn’t be able to get a reference without referencing the probe to the circuit.
Yes you have to hooked up to the battery connected to the vehicles circuit. I learned this very early on working on a limo and I attempted to just hook up to a battery on the floor, did not work lol. This is why the Power Probe comes with an additional lead to be able to reach. Thank you for watching.
You know I saw a video where a guy had a little switch adapter to keep the power" PowerProbe 3" on, have you seen the video or heard about it; because I'd like to get one for my powerprobe 3
Part number # pwpppkt008 price $10.09 , I just came across it, I do not know why there is different prices. I liked your video; I did not know that had Allen wrench to tightened it up.
yeah I just found it for you on amazon amzn.to/3cm5dyh I am going to buy one from here also thank you for letting me know about this, I will be adding this to a future video
