I loved the first PR movie from when I was a kid. So this makes me happy to see the OG costumes that the actors themselves/stunt performers wore from the actual movie. But also, kind of sad, that they haven't been kept in necessarily optimal conditions, while in the hands, of what I'm sure are various collectors' possessions, throughout all this time. Otherwise, I believe they'd be in much better condition overall than they currently are.
From what I heard, the suits barely stayed together during filming and several takes had to be reshot just because a shoulder or thigh covering kept falling off.
This suits haven’t been tended to since the 90s, they also used live explosives in the movie like in Super Sentai. I’m actually surprised that these costumes are still being held together.
I know they’re a bit deteriorated but I think they actually look badass like that, it’s like the rangers wore them for their final battle and this how the suits ended up when they set them aside in the end.
I remember BEGGING a McDonalds restaurant to PLEASE let me have the posters for this movie when they were done with their promo. I just got an awkward "ohhhhhhh I dunnoooooooo". Power Rangers were the reason I got into martial arts. I had an INSTRUCTINAL CASSETTE of the White Ranger teaching karate. I'd still hang one up. Damn. Getting a little emotional here.
@@Thermool I think so, also since it was American made for the whole the yellow ranger suit was fitted for a woman, I know in America the yellow ranger in the show was female but we splice the Japanese show and yellow over there is a man
Man , nothing was more disappointing than wanting one of the helmets for Christmas only to open that box and find a flat faced Mask! What I would have done for an actual replica helmet haha
@@zero28ism I will say that the price is very much warranted, though. If you want a good helmet and you're will to dish out some dough, save your money from the Harbro collection and get a custom helmet. It's 100% worth
@@Painted_Owl yeah I know, they are a good investement overall if you want to do cool cosplay or just to have them for display since they are so close to the originals as seen on the show
I was pretty impressed with my lightning collection helmet. For 100 bucks it makes a great display piece, and if I wasn't someone with a lot of sensory and breathing challenges, I'd have no problem wearing it. Guess in that respect its hard for me to judge masks, but for a readily available retail helmet at the price toys r us sells em for, I'd find it hard not to recommend.
Motocross pads don’t look like this. But when I was a kid I used to do motocross and every time my dad would put the pads on me I felt like I looked like these power rangers 😂 Those were good times man, damn good times.
Read an article that the movie costumes were incredibly cheaper than the tv series. They had to keep stopping and fixing them. They were so poorly made, that stupid shit like raising your hands would rip them.
Full on American production my butt. It was shot in Australia, mostly around Sydney, and a lot of the props were made here as well. I met the prop maker at his house after it was filmed, and he had the buried monster skeleton from the beach scene, _in his lounge room_! Admittedly it was an open plan two story house, and the lounge room didn't have any rooms above it, so it had a two story roof. His company was called 2D/3D Inc. He did the 3D (real props you could pick up a d handle, not CD stuff), and his wife did the 2D (things like matt painting backgrounds, etc). Nearly got a job working for them, and could have worked on Dark City, but I lost contact with them..... 😭
@@Victthequick nope, they don't keep anything, as far as props goes, the lightspeed rescue team got to keep their jackets and the dino charge team got to keep their dino gems but that's it. Every suit or helmets that the actors have are just custom made props
And Norm's come so far since the wee days of Tested. He's not that awkward kid anymore. He is a really well-revered host and conversationalist. Very poignant and thoughtful
They had them at Disney's Hollywood Studios*. Everytime I went I had to go see them and one day I went and they weren't there 2 weeks after this video pops up on my suggestions 😢
it is quite sad that they look like they've been forgotten and abandoned. compared to Japan's tokusatsu suits, which are well-preserved, save for a few that got damaged while in storage. granted they've been at it for years longer than PR ever did.
@@lowkeyobsessedngl I mean, it's because of the materials really, urethane rubber usually deteriorates A LOT with time, especially these older ones. Newer urethane rubber stands a bit more the test of time, but all of them will eventually get destroyed by time
I hope any future movies take note of these costumes and use ideas from them because they look like they are design for battle more so than the TV series designs!!
I grew up watching DINO THUNDER NINJA STORM OVERDRIVE SPD AND MYSTIC FORCE THAT WAS MY CHILDHOOD I’m 18 and time to time I watch the theme songs because it’s so nostalgic
@@krystalking3037 they aren't getting any better tho. The paint is deteriorating to the point that its just coming off as dust. They never painted these with lasting paints, these are likely just off the shelf latex or acrylic paints with no clearcoat, enough to make it thru the movie production, and thats it. They were never meant to last, and it shows.
When this movie finally came out on vhs, I watched it over and over until I wore the tape out and my parents were cool enough to buy me another copy. I would love to take a close up look at these suits. Thanks for the awesome video
I like how the Yellow suit's got the variant headlights helmet paired with it. There were two different ones made. The headlights one shown here, and one more closer to the original Japanese Zyuranger helmet.
I was 11 when the movie came out. I loved it so much! The opening scene where they go skydiving actually inspired me to get my skydiving license later on in life when I was old enough (19) and I went on to become an instructor.
I don’t know why Saban didn’t just keep using the movie suits since they were filming their own original episodes after season 2 as they used the ninja Sentai footage for the megazords and what not so for any suited fights they could have for sure used these suits
I myself have thought about this very thing! My only guess is that they may have felt that by leaving the movie costumes "movie exclusive" they would have garnered more movie sales. It was also non-canon (well, as you know, an alternate timeline or whatnot lol), so that may have deterred him.
@@heavy5013 That, and they literally never used any suits like these for any footage taken in any Super Sentai series that I can think of. Because of this, I was a little bit thrown off by how different and more heavily armored these suits looked when I saw them for the first time.
@HEAVY 501 *The Rangers actually used their Ninjetti uniforms in the TV show, after they gained them in the Movie - so the Movie is indeed Canon to the TV Series.*
@@heavy5013 That's true. The movie tells a very different story of how the rangers got their powers and zords in the series. If I'm not mistaken, only the turbo movie was actually canon.
Man, its so SAD to see those suits in that condition though, they are nearly falling apart and have pieces missing. Its still awesome and i would KILL to have even just ONE of these suits. The original power rangers TV show WAS my childhood and i watched the 1995 movie so many times i had the ENTIRE script memorized and could recite each line for each character as they said them. LOL.
You could purchase replica suits online if you really want to. But there's no way to repair the suits. It's too old and the rubber literally crumbles apart in your hands like jello if you aren't careful. All you can do is just be careful with them and try to keep them in a dry environment. Or even a glass case.
These power ranger suits were made by Robert Burman, a really cool guy. I've spoken to him in the early facebook days and he gave me some great advice on getting into makeup effects. He told me to learn how to recreate real things first, not fantasy or sci-fi. So learn how to sculpt a tiger, or tree bark, anything in nature. Study anatomy of real creatures, how they move, etc. Everything in fiction is derived from reality. Power Rangers was, is, and always will be one of my favorite franchises. Thanks for the video!
The suits look way better like that battle damage over all the battles They have gone through over the year so awesome and gives it more character, to be honest!
The old rubber and old spandex is so brittle that you would tear the suit. It would break apart before you even got it on. The suit was very tough and durable when it was first made, but today you would probably tear it apart with just your fingers with little effort. I've seen old costumes before. If you squeeze hard enough, they literally crumble apart in your hands like jello. They have no strength. The suit can't be be worn by anyone anymore. It literally is slowly falling apart.
this is so sick. It's interesting to see some cosplay props finished to a higher standard than Hero props in films. of course the outside has worn after 25 years, but I mean more the inside
a lot of props, even cars such as one of the original DeLorean used in the back to the future films were left out in the elements for decades in the universal lot, until very recently where it was basically rebuilt. Some people go to great lengths to preserve such props or to recreate them such as prosthetic master Tom Sivanni for the Horror crowed
They only need to be good enough to look good on the screen. Time is money, so a production won't typically waste money overbuilding. Whereas some cosplay props/outfits have significantly more time put into them, partly a labour of love and they will get more up close scrutiny.
@@Thermalions oh for sure, any time not spent finishing the inside of a helmet that'll never be seen can be extra time spent on the main hero suit or something.
25 years ago... Damn, I remember when my mom's friend bought us the VHS for Xmas and it was a defective cassette and the sound cut off like 20 minutes in, we still watched it anyway, lucky the video store exchanged it.
Does anyone remember MMPR season 3 when they introduce the Metallic Armor, but end up nothing more then glitter ? The show should've just use the movie costume as the Armor
Yeah, the metallic suits weren't the greatest, but at least they looked like the original ones. I'd rather they used them in the movie since the toys represented then anyway.
Ohhh I found this video after watching the movie just now, the first time I watched this was back in the theaters when I was 5 and my mind was blown still enjoy it even today
I like the fact that the idea of the actor wearing a form of the suit without the eye or mouthpiece was carried over to Ninja Storm and even the newest film.
Man, those costumes have not aged well... I remember seeing those costumes in PR material as a kid and they seemed to be made from leather. Back then I thought they kind of looked "kinky" and I didn't like it all that much. I wasn't old enough to be able to see the movie in cinemas and it's interesting to see them up close now... realising they are not made from leather AT ALL. :D
I rewatched the movie at the beginning of this year and frankly... it’s not thaaat bad. Sure it’s far from perfect, the script is what it is, but it’s entertaining with a multitude of very memorable scenes. Awesome soundtrack. Stellar costumes.
My hat goes off to the talented performers who did all the stunts in these suits. They look cool but from what I hear they were very heavy and restrictive. Not to mention they were falling apart during the filming.
It's so cool when one gets to see the props and costumes from the movies of your childhood but at the same time it breaks my heart seeing them in this state. Obviously I know they weren't built to last, but it feels sad somehow.
