I've just upgraded my two SVS SB2000 (non pro) with two PSA S1512. I shit you not, but those subs will outperform even the SVS PB16 Ultra! They shake the hell out of my house!

I have a PSA V1500 that I bought 3yrs ago. It sounds amazing. When I bought it, I looked at SVS and I felt you got more for a lot less going with PSA. It's a decision to this day I don't regret. Also, Tom Vodhanel at PSA gives AMAZING customer service!

This is a very difficult video series to make! Sealed vs ported, dual 18 vs single 16..... does it come down to sheer output, responsiveness, the tonal quality of the bass, music, movies, ease of use, looks, how they blend with your speakers... the list goes on. I’m very glad you are up to the challenge and can’t wait to see how you approach this comparison!! Excited for the next video!

I agree Vader but I’ve always learned to work with what you’ve got so these are the two subs that I have to compare so let’s see if we can highlight a few differences between them so the consumer can better make a decision for themselves as to which is better for their setup.

I agree as an apples to apples comparison, but the PB16 is a very popular sub and the PSA is an interesting piece as well. Given the price point of the two, I think it is interesting to compare one vs the other.
@Youthman
@Youthman 5 лет назад
It has definitely been a fun comparison and I believe both subs have unique strengths and attributes that the other does not have. It really comes down to what’s important to you.

Svs also has an intentionally steep roll-off. Probably has something to do with mitigating room gain.

@supportpowersoundaudio6273
@supportpowersoundaudio6273 6 лет назад
youthman is going to have his work cut out for him with this comparison. When he first told me he wanted something to compare with a pb16u I thought the V3611 would be the perfect choice. Both subs are large, powerful, and most important ported. The reason I say "most important" is that ported and sealed tend to have specific strengths and weaknesses that make direct comparisons difficult at best. It is sort of like comparing a jeep to a camaro. Both can perform very well...but some of their main performance metrics won't overlap fully compared to the other..:) But Youthman said his readers wanted to see him with the S3611 so we made that happen as soon as we could(once we caught up with back orders). So my advice to everyone would be...patience. I know from experience that trying to directly compare to VERY different subwoofer designs like this is going to have him scratching his head at times trying to figure out how to convey all his thoughts appropriately. If he still had the sb16u that would have been a bit easier for him. Two sealed designs, almost identically priced.
@Youthman
@Youthman 6 лет назад
Well I don’t have a lot of initial thoughts as Yet but I do feel the SB16 vs S3611 wouldn’t have been much of a comparison in regards to depth and output. From what I’m hearing so far, the S3611 very well may have more output than the PB16 Ultra. Looking forward to my findings. Stay tuned.
@FitraHomestead
@FitraHomestead 6 лет назад
@@supportpowersoundaudio6273 very diplomatic reply, thank you. Even though I ended up with pb16 deep down I am thinking, should I have gone for a sealed design. I will one day get one of your sealed subs to make the comparisons for my self and know what I like best. I know for a fact that this sub easily out does the sb16
@supportpowersoundaudio6273
@supportpowersoundaudio6273 6 лет назад
Oh it would have been no contest in terms of clean output, I didn't mean to imply that..:) The S3611 would equal maybe three of the sb16u overall. But sealed tends to "scale" somewhat similar. Meaning a subwoofer than has DOUBLE the output capability than the competitor in say the 15-25hz range will also have double to triple the capabilities into the mid and upper bass as well. That would be the v3611 vs. the pb16u. With the S3611, you'll see have significantly more headroom(vs pb16u) in the mid and upper bass(equal to two or even THREE of the pb16u)..but under 35hz or that separation will dramatic shift. First to "even overall" and then maybe even to the pb16u having a small edge in a very narrow bandwidth. THAT is whats going to make this difficult for you. If you pop in any movie and watch a good portion(say 15 minutes or more) you'll get a good representation of the entire operating bandwidth of each product. In that case I think the differences will become obvious. But if you just loop 5-10 seconds clips that make have a VERY limited bandwidth represented---especially in the 15-30hz range---then it may be more challenging to decide which sounds better.

Hi there Youthman, would you describe the SVS and the other sub as musical for just music only, hybrid for both or is one of them better at music than the other. The reason for asking is its hard matching any subs up with the following speakers, Magnepan, Martin Logan or Vandersteen. If the subs are not fast enough to keep up with these speakers the subs come across as sloppy and slow.

Something seems strange. In your side by side demo, it appears that the PSA is definitely much less wide compared to the SVS PB16, but your specs say the PSO is 8 inches wider. I don't know if it's some kind of optical illusion or not, but it definitely appears that the PSA is the more narrow speaker width wise.
@Youthman
@Youthman 5 лет назад
Without re-watching the video, I believe someone commented something similar as I had the sub turned to where one woofer was facing the wall when the sub's dimensions on the website have the long side as the width, and not the depth. Hope that clears it up.

your ears are best to judge room eq, people have different ears and hearing. a microphone is not very useful. its very easy to find a frequency generator online and with a slider that allows you to move the frequency around to even out the volume at listening position, to use your own ears is the end result. now you just need a eq software that lets you set any frequency and set the volume so that it sounds flat to you. a microphone don't replace your ears.

Being that the PSA is "Dual opposing" I guess that means you'd place it at the mid-point of a side wall. Vs. front and/or back walls with the SVS ultra if you had 2 or 4 of them? In addition to the scientific data with REW please pop in a few 4k Blurays you know well and give us your impressions. I think how they sound playing actual listening material matters more than what's measured. It's like 0-60 MPH and 1/4 speed testing for cars...means little for people who will only be driving these cars on city streets (e.g. stoplight to stoplight, gridlock, suburbia). Those numbers just sell cars and magazines.

I myself am more interested in what I hear than what I see on a graph but that’s just me

I can see what you 're saying guys. But think of this: you can have the finest amps and speakers, but when everything works together it can sound like crap. REW is there to let you identify what the problem areas are. REW can be used to tune the whole system, in a way that every component sounds at its best. Buying a UMIK 1 and learning how to use REW is, by far, my best audio investment.

The driver orientation on subwoofers with multiple active(or passive) radiators usually won't have much effect on things. The actual placement of the sub in the room will be much more influential in that regard. Once you have a good position picked out for the subwoofer I usually suggest orienting it for connection convenience first.(or decor preference).

I agree what you are saying Wim which is why I purchased a UMiK-1. I’m just saying I don’t enjoy that sort of thing, measuring, looking at charts, tweaking etc. that’s just me.

Don't think of measurements replacing any of your subjective thoughts. I agree with you there. For every one person I have coming into "chat" asking about a new measurement I have 99 saying "I don't know what all those squiggly lines mean"..:) What I have found most valuable with measurements is how they allow me to correlate what I'm hearing to what the system is really doing. Something sounds a little "tighter" or "faster"...I can go to the measurements and find out *exactly* why. If I can hear it and the measurements don't show it...I'm measuring the wrong thing..:) Also, there's a 1001 and 1 things you can measure(probably more). But I would start with the basics. Perhaps only the FR, nothing more. Get the measurement system calibrated(which in itself can be a huge PIA) and up and running so you get repeatable results. And then, always change ONE variable. For example, get a basic FR of the subs + the center channel. Then go into the preamp and experiment with different delays for the main 3 speakers and see how that changes the FR at the crossover point. It's much better to get three measurements right(and that they are repeatable) then to rush thru it all and have 30 you aren't 100% sure of..:)

Industry standard is to take the cone plus 1/3rd to 1/2 of the surround. The reason why you only want to take a fraction of the surround is because that is all that is moving enough to "displace" enough air to be considered part of the cone. Our 18inch driver is about 14.75" wide using this (cone + half surround) method. Which is pretty much in line with most "18 inch" drivers out there. A little smaller than a few, a little bigger than a few. Our 15" driver is about 12.75" wide using the same(cone + half surround) which, again, is pretty much average for a 15" cone size. There are a couple a LITTLE bigger, a couple a bit smaller. But we're talking small fractions of an inch for the most part. The svs "16 inch" driver is the same size as an industry standard 15 inch driver using this standard measurement method. you can see more in-depth measurements here www.avforums.com/threads/svs-16-ultra-series.2055949/page-3#post-24405978 You can also see comments comparing the 16" driver to industry standard 15 inch drivers with pretty much identical cone areas in the same link(seaton submersive sub)

ah well, just a feeling i had, i was sure when i measure it decades ago it was closer what i imagine 16" woofer should measure. i thought a 16" woofer should measure 16" outer edge of around diameter. if you take svs woofer and measure cone plus half surround(x2) its only 10"??? in this video it looks like they use outside mounting diameter. but i care most about cone area, since more excursion is more distortion i rather have small surround and more cone area and have bigger woofer or more of them to compensate.
@supportpowersoundaudio6273

the pb16 driver? No. It is as I described above and what you can see in the link. ***Our 15" driver is about 12.75" wide using the same(cone + half surround) which, again, is pretty much average for a 15" cone size. From my experience, the measurement of a driver has always matched up to the TOTAL diameter of the basket. To me, the PSA is correct with their driver measurement, while the SVS should be advertised as a 15.5" driver. Support Power Sound Audio has a much better explanation of the industry standard. As a consumer though, if I go out and buy a subwoofer that claims to be a certain measurement, it should be that measurement. Anything less makes me feel that I am a victim of false advertisement.

On our S3611 we consider it oriented "normally" with the amp plate on the rear baffle and the twin 18 inch drivers firing left and right (from the seating). Youthman oriented it 90 degree from there. So his WIDTH and DEPTH measurements are switched..:)

I can't argue with the finish options..:) We are very proud to keep all cabinet production in Ohio. But at the same time we have enough experience working with china to understand they can provide cabinets at "pennies on the dollar" in these scenarios too. We get emails from china weekly telling us how much we can save by letting them take all of our production from Ohio. Trust me, it can be tempting. When all of our direct competition is made in china(like svs) it's a challenge to be sure.

@@m.r.8247 Hello m.r. Are their better performing phones made in the USA at less cost? If not, than your comparison isn't accurate . But if you like svs that is fine, they offer good value too. @vwr32jeep
@vwr32jeep 6 лет назад
Youthman Ok. You’re not off the hook yet. In my defense, I went by your description in the video and the orientation of the sub for comparison. At about 2:48, you state that the sub has an 18” driver “in the front”, and an 18” driver “in the back”. The website lists these drivers as “side firing”, not front and rear. Calling them front and rear drivers, and having them face that direction in the side-by-side comparison, created the confusion. For review purposes, they should be oriented as they’d be viewed in the room. THEN, the 28” width description would make sense. Also, orienting the s3611 in its correct position next to the SVS could give a strong visual for some viewers who might appreciate a sub that doesn’t protrude as far into the room. There. 😴💤
@Youthman
@Youthman 6 лет назад
All valid points. Appreciate you correcting me. You would make a great lawyer. 😀 The reason I have them facing the same direction is so I can compare driver sizes side by side. I should add in the next video that the sub can be oriented either direction as Tom has shared it will have very little, if any, impact on performance. In my setup, if I were to purchase it, the sub would be directly behind my 150” AT Screen and would need to be oriented with one driver facing the front wall and one driver facing the screen.

That's interesting as it appears you have bought into a myth. Here is what FORBES has to say (you know...the media company that studies millionaires, billionaires and other successful people). "There is a lot of misinformation about this subject. Someone somewhere told speakers that they should not gesture with their hands - that they would seem unprofessional - and somehow this myth caught on. Unfortunately, this is the worst advice any speaker can ever receive. Confident, comfortable people always speak while gesturing with their hands. Nervous people rarely ever move their hands. If you want to appear to be confident and comfortable, move your hands. When you stop moving your hands, your body also moves less, creating a more boring visual experience for your audience." www.forbes.com/sites/tjwalker/2011/05/09/what-do-i-do-with-my-hands-media-training/#64c272a5528c www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/talking-with-hands-gestures_us_56afcfaae4b0b8d7c230414e I have always believed that intelligent people are learners.
