In todays video I show you all of the steps necessary to change the power steering fluid in your vehicle. Flushing the power steering system is an easy job that can be carried out at home yourself with minimal tools.
It is very important to maintain the power steering system on your vehicle and keep the power steering fluid it top condition. The power steering system is constantly under load when driving and therefore it creates high pressure and high heat in the system. The power steering fluid should be changed and flushed at regular intervals to keep it in good condition. If the power steering fluid is not maintained it can cause issues with the steering like -
1. noisy steering when turning the wheel
2. notchy or "jumpy" power steering assistance when turning
3. leaks from aged seals
4. failed power steering components - steering rack, power steering pump
If we maintain the fluid and change the oil with regular fluid flushed we can reduce the risk of power steering fluid issues down the track.
In my 2018 Isuzu Mu-x the power steering fluid should be replaced every 90K. This service schedule also includes replacing a power steering hose. Most of the time the hose can be inspected and it wont actually require replacing.
The Isuzu Mu-x and D-max run hydraulic power steering to assist with the turning of the wheels. This system should have the fluid flushed and changed every 90k to keep it in good condition. If you aren't sure of the history of your power steering fluid, if it smells burnt or you have an issue with the system. It is recommended to carry out a secondary power steering fluid change to flush the system and remove all of the old oil.
In my 2018 Isuzu Mu-x the manufacturer recommends running Dexron III ATF Fluid. I use Penrite Oils in my vehicle so I am using the Penrite Dexron III ATF Fluid in my vehicles power steering system.
The process I show you in todays video for changing the power steering fluid and flushing the system will ensure that all of the old fluid is removed. It also ensures that all of the air in the system is removed before load is put on the power steering. This reduces the likely hood of the system developing noises or issues while changing and flushing the system.
How to change your power steering fluid and flush the system -
1. Jack Vehicle up and Place on Jack stands
2. Remove under trays
3. Drain Power steering reservoir
4. Remove low pressure supply line from power steering pump
5. Catch all fluid and measure
6. Turn wheels from left to right until power steering system is drained
7. Refit low pressure power steering Line and tighten
8. Fill reservoir all the way to the top
9. Turn wheels left to right until the fluid level stops dropping down
10. Start engine for 10 seconds and switch off
11. Recheck power steering fluid level (top up if necessary to max mark)
12. Start engine and work wheels left to right (topping up Fluid to Max)
13. Recheck for any leaks from low pressure supply line at pump
14. clean down under vehicle, fit bash plates and lower back onto ground
15. start engine and turn left to right with load now on the system
16. Top up fluid level and maintain at max mark on reservoir
17. refit reservoir cap and clean down engine bay
18. road test vehicle, recheck system for leaks and final level check.
Now you know exactly how to change the power steering fluid on your vehicle you will be able to maintain the fluid and ensure long trouble free power steering system life.
In this video I use a syringe and clear tube to suck the power steering fluid form the reservoir. You can also use a turkey baster, vacuum suction pump or just drain all of the fluid from the lower supply hose. The main reason for sucking the fluid from the reservoir is to reduce the amount of mess made when removing the PS line.
