Today on 2CarPros we show you how to replace the power steering pump for a Mercedes Benz ML500 from years 1998-2005 If you have any further interest please visit www.2carpros.com *Disclaimer: Please use all safety precautions
My observations after taking a whack at this on a 2001 ML320: The overflow nipple on the upper driver's side of the radiator is easy to break off by accident when working in this corner of the vehicle. You want to let the vehicle cool off overnight before doing the power steering pump, or at least wear gloves, since you'll be very close to the upper radiator hose and exhaust manifold. Make sure you have a new o-ring for the pressure hose. The pump I received didn't come with one, and the old o-ring was squashed and split. You can hold the belt tensioner with a wrench and a tie-down strap wrapped around the frame. I used a torx socket rather than attaching to the outer nut since I didn't want to accidentally loosen the nut. The pressure hose can come in contact with the power steering pump's pulley and get cut open if the hose is at the wrong angle. Replacing the pressure hose is more difficult than it looks due to not having much room to get two hands in to maneuver the rack end of the pressure hose to the correct angle. You'll want to have a set of extra o-rings and a dental pick as well, since every time you fail and pull the hose out of the rack, the threads pull the o-ring off the end of the hose. The two bolts at the rear of the pump are twice as hard to get back on as they are to get off. Removing the wheel, fender plastic, and exhaust manifold heat shield provide better access. If you jack the front wheels off the ground, you can bleed the power steering with the motor off by slowly turning the wheels stop to stop until no more bubbles come up. If you turn the wheel too fast, the reservoir can overflow and make a mess or you can suck bubbles back down into the system. If you clamp a mirror and light in place, you don't need an assistant.
Thank you, straight to the point. All the other videos are 20 min plus! Also I recommend to people to go with BOSCH I have had bad luck with the quality of Amazon parts. Not much room for profit on a $60 pump so they are going to cut corners on quality.
Is this procedure applicable to the ML430 Year 2000 as well? Some screws (and maybe locations) that need to be taken out are definitely different compared to the ML500 from what I can tell.
I removed my reservoir first to give a bit more room to get at the 2 rear mount bolts. Theres a heat shield on the exhaust header that really cramped my style. Cheers
hello .ı have one question , ı have mercedes 1996 e320 and ı have to change steering pump and I find 1998 e430 stering pump for replace my car . 1998 e430 steerıng pump can fit my car ? serial numbers is different but some people say compatible some said not . what do you think about that ? thanks
When I changed the reservoir, I noticed the inlet connector for the reservoir on the pump was able to be spin around and was able to be manipulated in all directions. I was assuming this piece should be tightly sealed and affixed. Is this correct? I think that potentially broken inlet connector is the cause of my continued leak.
3:10 when you removed the resovior from the pump here that metal clip you took off do you by any chance know how i can get that i lost mine in the engine bay
Ordered my new PS pump WITH new reservoir as one defect could have effected the other. Few questions 1. Same methods apply for 2000 ML320? 2. Knowing the new unit comes with pulley do I need to remove old one to access hardware to remove unit? 3. Is it a MUST to use MB fluid or is there a common available product that would be acceptable? Thanks a lot Looking forward to this NOT so fun job 😳😂
Hi, can you please tell me the size of the socket you used to remove the bolt on the back of the power steering pump and which one did you remove to get the power steering pump of the engine.
People complaining..... Sorry they didn't turn the bolts for you. These videos are made w the assumption, you have some mechanical knowledge. I use ur vids as a quick, "okay that's how many bolts and where the hidden ones are," before I attack. Good vid. 👍
To everyone complaining about this video, I think it’s made with the assumption that you have at least a basic knowledge of mechanical work. So they don’t need to go into specifics because all you do is look at your new pump that you undoubtedly already have since you’re replacing your pump?? Look at the holes, this is kindergarten stuff. Or search the MB forums. Geez...
Crank Turner it appears you are very knowledgeable in this. I was advised on yesterday that my 2008 Mercedes needs a pump and a line. I was very shocked at the price. I think he is charging that amount because I’m a women. I decided to come her to see what it is.
specify in the description the name of the motor in the video without that you're gonna have a ton of people telling you you got the wrong motor for what they're looking for like your power steering pump video for the 2007 c230 you're not working on a m272 in that video and every comment is someone telling you it s not set up like their year c230
Wow.Have a 2000 55. My steering is very stiff been that way for a while. Its steerable once moving. Its not smooth at all. Anybody has an idea what it can be?
Thank you - now I know why my mechanic is charging me $900.00 to replace my power steering pump! Looks worth it to me...single, female and absolutely no knowledge of car mechanics. :)
Pat Patt that’s insane. The pump is $60 on Amazon for w163 w/ warranty and shipped (Prime). As you can see it’s about a 1 labor hour job, 2 max if you’re taking your time. +new fluid $20-30? $900 is absurd.
1) twice you put a wrench behind the PS unit and you never explained what you are doing. We need an explanation or a diagram since we can not see behind the engine. 2) All of the sudden the Pulley disappeared. That is the most difficult item to take off. How did you remove the pulley?
sorry this video is only a little bit helpful it would have been nice to know how many bolts hold the pump particularly the location of the one on the rear, also you do not need a line wrench, but obviously is preferable.also that bloody music is annoying
+Julian Hernandez You don't have to remove the radiator. At most would be the fan shroud if you really wanted to get more room. But it can be done w/o removing any of that (as long as you're okay working in a little tight space)
I have SL 350 with 112 engine vehicle steering is too much hard should i replace power steering pump there is no sound and this thing happed suddenly i was making donuts 😂
Your skipped the two most important steps. First always do a flush before removing the old pump so you dont run the new pump with old fluid. Second, After filling the new pump reservoir with new fluid you need to hand turn the pully to prime the pump so its not dry. Otherwise you damage der new pump right away after starting the engine..
Depending on if you take it to a normal garage or the dealer probably anywhere from 1200 to 2300. I'm just guessing different factors can bring the price up or down such as availability of the unit.
Also, why don't you say the size and names of the tools you are using? Some people don't have tool sets and have to go out and buy the exact tools needed.
@@jf5016 Then this video is misleading, and that means thumb down. Your vehicle is a different model with, most likely a larger engine. Go Fast Mercedes are sometimes more complex and still sometimes simpler to work on. On some models.
