I build a simple 289 years ago. 66 block 40 over with flattops, 477 471 crower solid lifter cam with a wide duration. Ported 66 heads with 195 chevy valves. Electronic ignition and a old offy360 intake with 600 edlebrock. Long tube header and full length 2.5 inch exaust. 64 falcon with a 5 speed. No super fast but a nasty little bird that surprised a few big block cars.
I did this exact same modification to my 68 Mustang back in 1980 when I was in high school. Went from a two-barrel cast iron intake to a four barrel aluminum Edelbrock, with a Holly four barrel carburetor, Hedman long tube headers, Thrush turbo flow mufflers. I did it all in one weekend. Engine woke up.
Nice car , great to see young guys keeping the passion going. Always like the 289 , built a few years back , they really respond well to the right bolt on's.
It takes a little modification. If I remember correctly, Cleavland heads return coolant through the block and Windsors (260, 289, 302 and 351) return through the intake manifold. Not impossible but it can be done.
That Summit carb looks like a Holley. A tech at Holley told me about modifying a vacuum secondary carb by opening the round vacuum diaphragm and removing the ball bearing that resides in there. Geez, that thing drove like a double pumper! My 67 was already only getting 7 mpgs so I put the ball bearing back in. It was fun spinning the tires though.
I had a 69 with a 302 and I didn't notice much of a change switching the intake and carburetor like you did. But it did wake up when I replaced the cam. It gave it a power band, kind of like those 2-stroke dirt bikes.
@@rookie__pilot yeah I have built a few 260-302s they respond really well to a nice cam and intake. The heads are restrictive but if you don’t have the money for aftermarket they can be ported easily
Wondering what fuel pump you're running ? Stock fuel pump puts out around 7 lbs. Not sure about Summit but a matching Fuel pump or regulator is highly recommended.
Dear A.R.P. 👍👌👏 Very well done again (video and work). You're such a likeable person with a big positive aura and always a smile on your face. I hope and wish you that you can keep it that way. 2) The beautiful Mustang runs and sounds great. I'm eagerly looking forward to watch the next video. Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and especially health to all of you.
@@rookie__pilot You're welcome, it's my pleasure. Additionally: Well deserved, young man, well deserved indeed. Thanks for replying and especially for giving a heart to my comment. As you know, I always and totally appreciate both very much. Sincerely yours.
@rookie__pilot - What bolts did you use to install this intake? I have read that the stock 2” bolts are too short and do not provide enough thread engagement? What was your experience here?
I used grade 8 bolts, i don’t quite remember what size they were, 2in or 2-1/4 or 2-1/2. I do believe i went a tad longer for that reason though! Sorry I couldn’t be more help
If budget isnt an issue, id go with the electric power steering option. Borgeson steering kits are also very popular. If you could an original set up those work nice too
I recently watched the factory differences on the 289 engines and the 4 barrel came with different piston types and dual exhaust. Other than that it was all the same.
That looks like a lot of fun. Wish I still had my old shop. A fella I knew liked to put sintered screens between the carb and intake....a series of 3 sintered screens. He said he could dial back on the fuel jets for better mileage. Headers, ignition and high gears were addressed as well. All this on a 3/4 ton pickup.....1978 Chev 350 4 bolt. Narrow tall tires. 23 mpg.......which was not bad for that year...lots of torque. Thanks for triggering a memory....good times.
@@rookie__pilot And now.........something completely different. An EV called Silence SO 4, built in Barcelona Spain. Looks like a Smart car.....2 passenger. $ 10,000 U.S. What is different...it uses batteries you can pull out and walk them into your house/apartment......and charge on household current. 2 batteries per bus. Game changer. I keep forgetting to tell Sarah. 65 miles per charge in 72 degree weather.
Hey RP, a real rookie writing here. When you put back the distributor, did you set the timing immediately with the timing light ? I saw that you timed it later after fine-tuning. I love these cars but they are pretty hard to find back here in Canada. Great video again, Thanks.
Hey there, i put the distributor back in the exact position i pulled it out. I marked it with a sharpie to get it exactly the same. Not sure what timing it was before. But now were at 10-12 btc. Theres a couple down here in the south !
How about some good aftermarket cylinder heads then that 289 would breathe a lot better and take advantage of the new intake and carburetor the stock heads don’t flow all that well but it depends what you want from the little motor
Edelbrock intakes have ruined more cars than any other aftermarket parts. Choke brackets hot starts accelerator linkages air cleaners fuel lines. Oil leaks. All modified and mostly hacked wanting a new intake. Keep it stock. Run perfect. Dependable. Don’t be a rookie. .
I like the Brawler's Carb's, instead of the Summit, there more of a stock replacement, but a 650 Holley Brawler, with the manual 2nd's has some extra Kick. get your car up to 30mph, Then manual shift to low & Punch it. if you want more maybe , might want to up grade your rear end gear's, 2.80 to a 3.00 or a 3.00 to a 3.25 & still cruz down the fwy.
Ahhhh... I had that manifold when I was in high school in 1974 exactly 50 years ago this summer, on my 67 Mustang that I lost my virginity in, LOL That was a sweet engine with a 650, but honestly, it was that 500 Holley 2 barrel that I think really made that engine come alive! Fun video, thanks!
Year 1965 all Ford 289 motors wether two or four barrel we're built with hypo cams and other parts. They were all painted black with golg valve covers a Air bonnet. This was one year only promotion from Ford.
Awesome great upgrade to make it run, better I'm in New Zealand we have the Australian Holden car's I had a wagon and put a small 253 V8 in it but it was factory with a 2 barrel carb but there intake is aluminum, but it was good for economy as our petrol is expensive here ☹️ but that car was sold year's ago, I have a economy carb 4 barrel that will hopefully get put on a motor and project car in future, but for now still sorting out my Rav4 😕 👍🏽
isnt he the helper of Shara ? good video btw . i have 1 73 stang with 2 carbs 500 intake,, 1 convert with a 4 barrel and 1 coupe with a 2 barrel intake.. lol.. slow means more miles ... with our patrol prizes mebe the way to go ,,lol.. 2,00 euro the liter .. a gallon is 3,6 liter ,, so that's ,, 7 dollar 20 cents for a gallon in Holland .
Thank you for sharing, great job and really enjoyed watching your giving this awesome 289 engine a needed upgrade there a fantastic engine and another mustang running the road !
The performer 289 is meant for the torque earlier on the power band, while the RPM is meant for up to 6500? If im not mistaken, this engine would not benefit from the RPM with its stock heads / internals
@@DominatorGarage do you know the number differences? Cause im not sure, but i see where the RPM could be better but with a stock cam, i dont see there being any benefit for the RPM compared to the performer
Pretty car. Love the way those rolled exhaust tips make it pop. Lots more left with that little 289. Legendary engine. Put a gear in the back of it and watch it come to life!
@@rookie__pilot great choice...you'll love the snap it gives you. If you put a cam in it can recommend an old school grind? I love a comp 268h. It's great for lower compression engines, has a noticeable lumpy idle and has good torque. Put a really good valve spring with about 125 lbs of seat pressure and let it rip. It loves rpms... good luck and if you need any advice please feel free to reach out. I had my first 66 mustang with a 289 in 1982 and never looked back.
@@rookie__pilot if you decide to gobthev4 wheel disc route I'll give you thecstep by step on how to put an explorer 8.8 disc brake posi, usually they are 3.73 or 4.10 gears... it's a fantastic swap and will fit a 65/66 perfectly... justvtakes a little work.
@@scottford1091 im excited to feel the difference, the last mustang i had, had a 2.80 open diff. Now we have a 3.73 lsd! I also had that 268H in the previous 289! I loved the idle
Woulda been nice if you would explained when dropping the distributor back in place on how to drop it back in on #1 cylinder and on the top of the stroke.
True, but i didn’t put it back to #1. Just dropped it back in exactly where it was before, used a marker on the distributor base to the block and lined them back up👍🏻
When i drop in distributor I just stuff #1 Cylinder spark plug hole with tissue and wait for a pop while cranking..then fine tune crank timing marks. Center oil pump drive shaft with grease if need be.
@@rookie__pilot cool I wasnt trying to be critical Angel, just asking. I have a 1961 Austin Healey 3000 here in the UK and it is exempt from seat belts due to age. I wondered if it was the same in the US for classic or historic vehicles?
Now that it can breath, I was wondering if you are doing a bigger exhaust too. Those look like two little straws for exhaust tips. A bigger radiator is a must in the summer.
Only thing I see wrong here is The heads are more likely to be 2 barrel heads not 4 barrel, and your sort of defeat the purpose, and now your dumping to much fuel for the heads
Hmm maybe youre confusing the K code HiPo heads? A and C codes had the same heads. Maybe different compression? Not sure if youve tried this before, definitely made a difference. MPG does go down when you go bigger carb yes
@@rookie__pilot Nope I did what u did 40yrs ago, and when I got 4 barrel heads it was night and Day Difference, there is a difference where the valves are, doesn't matter a code c code or k code, there is 2 different heads for sb ford Been building them for ever, I have never taking off 4 barrel heads the had 2 barrel carb and intake, unless the engine was torn apart If u flip the heads over The 2 barrel is circular where the valves are and the 4 barrel has like a round point going back in toward the spark plug That's how you tell if it's a 4 barrel set of heads or 2 barrel heads
My 68 stang came with 2 barrel. but I built the motor since, and modified the heads. I didn’t even know there was 2-4 bbl heads?? Wow.. are the 2bbl heads slower?? Or maybe they just come with smaller valves or something?? My 68 came with 1966 heads, I heard they were a little better, I think better compression, not sure if true or not tho, they now have 202 valves w 3angle grind, and good porting work, 2bbl heads hmm
HYPOs are internally balanced and have a dual point dist.and a specialty 635 Holley among other obvious external parts. I highly recommend a set of 4:33 rear gears.
