I'll admit to not using the socket set that much, but I've been using the ratchets form this set quite a bit. I'm very happy with the feel and grip of these tools. The flat handle is very nice to press against when using the ratchets. The ratcheting mechanism is also nice with their compact heads and fine tooth ratchets. Overall, I found the quality very good and would recommend these tools, especially if you're starting out and looking for alternatives to other more expensive brands.
I hope to use the sockets more. Truth is, I don't often use 1/2" sockets and when I do, I often use my impact sockets. From what I've seen so far however, these are of good quality and should hold up over time.

Hi eric when i heard the sound from the ratchet i shook my head and thought china, good news is they are Taiwanese and their quality is better. I own my own tool company the design of the ratchets is a copy of the elora range of tools a socket set from them woll cost you 2000 bucks they aint cheap used in the aviation and oil industry simply cause you cant get better forget snap on, these are stainless steel and made in germany. If your rich and can afford a set buy them their ratchets are silent and for life. Anyway like you said for a beginner i agree looked good and the sockets nice clear large etched sizes are good nothing worse picking one up back in picking out another. GREAT REVIEW OVERALL. Nick.

As long as reasonable priced it will do the job, i still have a little socket set in the car which has pulled me out a hole quite a bit as recently as yesterday. I do a lot of off road and you just never know what you need and when you need it. Like you say a good beginners kit.

@nickfree46 Even China has some very high quality tools but between the USA, Europe, Taiwan and China - China has by far put out the most $chitt. I have a lot of tools from China that I'm very happy with just gotta research before you buy.

I'm sure these are excellent tools, but I find that Harbor Freight's hand tools work very well and cost only a fraction of what these tools cost. I am not a professional mechanic, however, so I can't comment on their value from that viewpoint.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 9 лет назад
usmale47374 I don't consider these tools that expensive compared to some of the other 'major' brands. In fact, they sell them at many auto parts stores which makes them more accessible to the DIYer. I consider them a good alternative to the 'expensive' brands. Thank you for your input.

My old harbor freight tools always failed in some way even though i do respect them for beginners, bolts breaking ratchets failing was always a factoe for me
@twn5858
@twn5858 9 лет назад
Carloslb96 It has been the opposite for me. I have broke the bolts they put in breaker bars when I try to get the crank bolt off when changing the timing belt in my car. So I went to harbor freight and bought a new breaker bar and it held up just fine (thank god).

usmale47374 the sockets i got from harbor freight ALWAYS expand on me, eventually they just strip over the bolt. Heavily regret buying them.
@jcimicata
@jcimicata 9 лет назад
usmale47374 Harbor freight might be ok for a tool you grab twice a year, but if you do use them with regularity they are simply not safe. I've seen way too many bent wrenches, broken breaker bars, and snapped pry-bars come from there that I will never use their garbage, that said, I work on cars for a living so I need reliable stuff.

These might be OK beginner tools, but that's about it. I finally broke down and bought 2 new Snap-On ratchets in the last year. They are wonderful and high quality. Pricey but I'll never need to buy a ratchet again in my life. Buy it once and be done if you can afford it. There are other good ratchets as well, but the ratchet is something you rely on heavily so buy a good one. The ratchet in the video is obviously crappy inside (listen to it).

Yeah... I get why people use a 12 point in hard to reach areas, but that's exactly why I don't agree with that. Because it's hard to reach you might get the socket on a little crooked, apply too much force, whatever the case may be, and then strip the bolt/nut. That's the WORST place to have this problem... a hard to reach place with a stripped nut or bolt can turn an hour long job into a two day job. I rather not risk it and take the extra time to get that 6 point on there. Worst case situation, you either can use an extension and rotate the 6 point until it seats then attach the ratchet (did that this past weekend actually), or if you're not using an extension just take the ratchet/socket out, rotate it slightly, then try again. Sometimes you'd lucky enough to be able to put a finger on the socket and just give it a couple teeth worth of turns.

Erick I know this isn't anythinf related to this video but I've noticed you reply a lot of your subs and I was wondering if I could get your help! I've been having problems with my 1992 nissan 240sx. It started with a clutch pedal sticking to the floor so I did a bad diagnosis. I dropped my Tranny changed the clutch and throaut bearing and still didn't fix the pedal from coming back up. So then I changed the slave and master and clutch line which gave me regular clutch pressure but still no engagement. Did a clutch pedal adjustment and nothing. I give the car gas and let go of the clutch but the car still wont move. I also just discovered that my car wont even stall with my foot off the clutch. I can be in any gear with the car running and it won't stall. Ik you may not respond but I had to give it a shot because I'm getting really desperate. P.s could it be a simple bell housing pivot ball? Thank you sir!

Speaking of socket sets, see if you can solve my dilemma? I have a 20 year old Craftsman socket set that came in a black plastic case which had nice slots for all of the sockets and ratchets, however one of the two plastic snaps that close the case has worn away and the last one is about too fall off also. OBTW make sure you know which side is the top before you open one of these cases. I KNOW that all the sockets will fall out! Anyways getting back to my dilemma, I can not find a replacement case for fit all of my sockets and ratchets. I called Sears and could not find a replacement case. Does anyone know where I can find one?
@RedWhiteAndBlueVideo
@RedWhiteAndBlueVideo 9 лет назад
You sure you can't repair your case by riveting the flaps or enclosures back on? Maybe you could rivet on some clasps from a supply store.

I'm a shadetree mechanic and I have some Powerbuilt sockets. I informally tested a 1/2" drive, 12 pt. 19mm socket by using it to break loose a Honda crankshaft/harmonic balancer bolt. As some of you know the Honda/Acura crank bolt is quite tight and a challenge to remove. With the proper tools to immobilize the balancer, I used the 19mm Powerbuilt socket to crack loose the crank bolt. The socket held up just fine even though I used a 4 ft. long, 1 1/4" i.d. pipe as a cheater. If it can hold up to that, it will work fine for the home mechanic, IMHO.
@rcdkfjdj
@rcdkfjdj 9 лет назад
I had an old powerbuilt flex handle that was handed down to me. It lasted for a long time 6+ years and took a lot of abuse on things I should have used a breaker bar on (head bolts, flywheel, etc). It even had the perfect diameter for my cheater bar extension. It broke one day when I dropped. It was my go-to ratchet. Felt way better than an entry Craftsman. Used they went for about $10-15 on Ebay. However, I decided to upgrade to the GearWrench 81230P 120xp and it was a world's difference. Way more degrees, probably 80+ more teeth. The powerbuilt just felt sloppy compared to the gearwrench. I love me some flexheads.

Looks like a very nice product. One thing got me thou I've never seen a socket with a marking that rubs off. I don't use junk but I have in the past bought El Cheapo socket sets and all had the socket size stamped on the socket. The same socket that split if the ratchet mechanism did not fail first. ;-)

Actually I have the same 3/8 rachet and they are built for war. The thing they need is grease ,they come dry. There is a small black cover. Remove with a pick ,then spread the O ring and press out the yoke, grease and reassemble. The rachet will be smooth ,quiet and last a very long time.

Anyone actually use these socket sets, how durable are they? I am interested in getting the 3/8th and 1/4 inch set. Anyone have any other suggestions on what to buy, my main reason for getting these would be that I need deep and shallow, metric and standard. I also love that fact that it comes with the foam insert for a tool chest.
