We're tearing down the PowerColor Red Devil RX Vega 64 graphics card today, including some information on thermal paste and the fix.
Ad: Buy Thermaltake Floe 360 on Amazon goo.gl/gPpZqx
Review will post once drivers work properly. There is a known issue where current AMD drivers do not properly enumerate the clock on the partner models, to the point of performing equally to reference V64s. It should be fixed soon-ish, we're told.

ok, if buildzoid does a breakdown of this board, I want to know how he does it with a straight face or without instinctively diving over to the Halon extinguishing system to set it off. I made a comment in another video about how powercolor sounds like a cheap knock off brand, a budget friendly shit brand. I said this with out knowing anything about the company, just off my instinct with reading their horrible Brand name. I then got bashed by many what i think are 12 year olds saying how it is a legit brand with top performance cards. I laughed it off, now i come to this video and see this. A fucking naked gpu with missing paste on it. lmfao, power color sucks confirmed

The thing which puzzles me is why so far only XFX appear to be going for a smaller PCB (which Vega makes practical through both VRM layout and not needing space for GDDR5) The shots I've seen of their card have one of the fans blowing clear through the heatsink and through a vented backplate. Surely that will allow for better cooling than a longer (and baren) PCB blocking airflow.

AMD should specify a target height to suppliers and require using a hard space filler such as conformal coating to get package heights close to that target if the package is a bit short.
@Orvis25
@Orvis25 6 лет назад
@GN Even though amd claims to possibly have this production thing fixed with having both HMB stacks, and the die level, do you think they really have? I am just curious if this is just the teething issues (per say) if having (to my knowledge) the first chip on market that has three separate chip's on one larger chip, that all need to be cooled by one thermal pad. Over time (vega's second generation) may have this totally resolved i hope so they can actually hit production numbers. But on the other hand look at thread ripper (4 ryzen dies) so..... IDK what to think here.
@erselino

is it possible to put liquid metal on this card with the height difference?
@stormyandcold
@stormyandcold 6 лет назад
Good thing they sent you this card. Anyway, this height difference between the core and hbm; doesn't that mean that if the heatsink itself doesn't account for the difference, then, there's not enough pressure, once attached for the thermal compound to work optimally? I imagine that if it'd been the core that was lower, then, this would've potentially been a much more serious problem.

Out of curiosity what is the stepping on this power color vega ? Wasn't AMD supposed to be moving away from ASE for packaging the vega dies (well i'm saying that but I of course have no idea who packaged this gpu)? IMO it isn't AMD's nor Powercolor's fault, it's the packagers fault (well also AMD for allowing two different designs as well)... What I don't understand is why aren't the dies all "epoxied" it makes more sense just for interposer protection alone... I mean how are AIBs even supposed to account for 2 different heights ? 2 different cold plate designs ? More paste is a solution but is it really ideal ? Another question how are coolers installed in production ? I'm guessing by hand, and how is the thermal paste applied ? By hand also ? If so that's a variable for fuck up
@jadoei13
@jadoei13 6 лет назад
RiffsNReviews HBM2 heat output isn't all to much, so I'm not to concerned about 40 micrometers of extra thermal paste. While I certainly don't think it is ideal, I guess they didn't have a whole lot of choice given that it would be better for everyone to have the better package.
@930dave
@930dave 6 лет назад
jadoei13, 40 micros isn't much but it is still not a fix, that also is another assumption on their part as the height differentials could be more or less than that on different samples. I'm sure you know too much paste will actually act as an insulator, fine line though...Waiting to see their thermal differentials, really interested to see the numbers now.
@n.shiina8798
@n.shiina8798 6 лет назад
it's still a problem even just 40um difference. there's little to none direct thermal transfer to the HBM2 dies while the device itself is temperature sensitive. sure, by having more thermal paste does the job but again, there's little to none direct thermal transfer. what we need is a direct contact as much as possible while TIM fills the pits on both cold plate and heat generating device.
@RetroTinkerer
@RetroTinkerer 6 лет назад
Thermal paste is not designed to replace direct contact is there to replace air wich due to impeefwctions in both the die and heatsink surface is unavoidable more so in products that won't get custmized lapping or surface matching... if AMD can't produce these packages with a real good z-heigh tolerance board partners will run away from Vega.
@riffsnreviews
@riffsnreviews 6 лет назад
Yeah but AMD doesn't produce the packages, they don't produce anything except the design (like nvidia)... But they still seem to find it acceptable for some unknown reason (probably due to already really low yields on the dies and potentially on the packaging also). And they"ve already changed packager, but i'm not sure that the change applied to the Vega 10 as well, well nobody knows. But yeah I agree it will start pissing off the AIB partners if this results in an "uneven" finished product, if they end up with lesser performing gpus because of this (which we will find out soon), people could just send them back and write off the brand because they aren't aware of this packaging difference. Potentially also just making it a pain to work with as well. Which is why I was wondering if the heatsinks are fitted by hand ? Because that could also result in a % of lost dies (though most likely small) when it comes to the unmolded version, with the interposer being really fragile. And I do think that they hand mount the heatsinks, because sapphire used to install a plastic film on the fiji dies to protect the interposer (also unmolded package).

what probably happened with the heatsink contact plate not having a recess for the gpu so the hbm would touch the aluminum is they forgot to add a recess in the schematic they gave out to the machinists that machine the aluminum for their contact plates (you can see the milling marks at 4:10 so its not cast) in theory if things were really bad with the cards thermals they could recall it and re-mill the plates to have a recess (which would realistically only take about one minute per plate)

There is no reason for bad contact between the cold plate and HBM .04 mm copper sheets is a commonly production of motor brushes and copper gaskets on small electronics (biggest reference on RC cars). So a shim to be cut and placed in the gap between the cold plate and HBM should only add a few Penny's to production cost. Using a thermal adhesive to attach a Shim to the cold plate over the HBM would result and better conductivity of heat then Gooping large amounts of thermal paste. Thanks for the video Steve. If I do decide to buy Vega I now know go ahead and pull the heat spreader off and see if I need to fix this. problem

@Bobbit323
@Bobbit323 6 лет назад
I understand that the packages may or may not be recessed but surely they'd know that on average the HBM seems to be lower, why not just add one more operation to the machining process of the heatsink and take .002 mm off where the GPU core touches? Or maybe you explore the modification of the heatsink's contact area? You could use pieces of flat aluminum with mounting holes to test methods of removing material and contact patterns(in place of expensive heatsinks). Then apply those methods to a real heatsink and see if it does or doesn't effect thermals. It could also test whether or not the thickness of the thermal compound effects heat transfer enough to make a difference.

If the the heatsink all ties into one block would not get saturated with heat from the hottest components and basically not draw heat from the secondary or less hot components. It seems you risk that being a problem if there is too much heat going through the same block. If it can cool quick enough I suppose it would draw from the other components. An optimal solution would seem to be to break the block into multiple sections.
