This ABC News special features the first interview granted by Nelson Mandela on his June 1990 visit to the United States. Mr. Mandela speaks with Ted Koppel for 71 minutes and answers questions from the studio audience. Topics covered include his 27 years in South Africa's prisons, the struggle against apartheid and its eventual collapse, and the future of a united South Africa. News footage and analysis bookend the interview and place the viewer unfamiliar with events in context. Shared for historical purposes. I do not own the rights.

Unshaken, unbothered, charismatic, with a calmness of the air. This man was the best leader I have ever seen. He understood the assignment. May we learn and be better through Mr Mandela’s speeches and just the way he thought. Amandla.

Lol, he's held as an example only because he promised no retribution against the brutal rule of the whites. In other words, he was held up because he was a house slave (think the word that begins with n). He understood his assignment indeed.

@@alicemasemola2319 Then free every prisoner from your prisons. Responsibility is no longer a thing. And no wonder Europe wanted to push Christianity during colonialism. Christianity is the source of one way logic that enslaves people and aids and abets the thugs. So yes, lay down your arms, avoid war and be my bitch. The alternative is death. So take the shortcut and love me like my bitch. It's all about love.

I love what Mandela accomplished in some regards but in this interview, i don’t understand what people are raving about. Mandela implied that it is okay to support other nations that violate the same human rights as was being violated in SA as long as they support you, you support them. ( that is the ANC policy but he is the leader of the ANC) This is a self serving attitude to take and not for the highest good of all. This is flawed thinking, and horrible position to take. It is immoral. The guy in the audience is correct. It is hypocracy at its worst!! I was equally disappointed by Mandela’s answer. He’s not drawn into racial issues of other nations he states, but he wants help from other countries relating to racial affairs in SA. Please Mandela’s urgument and reasoning in this regard was ludacris!!! How is this high reasoning? And what is admirable about this?
@adelejonker6110
@adelejonker6110 Год назад
@Billy The Goat i think you are missing the point. They are refering to human rights issues. Apartheid was a racial regime that violates human rights to freedom. But they will support another country/ leader that does the same ( violating human rights), as long as they support the ANC. And you know what if you don’t care about human right treaties/ international bill of human rights, than sure maybe tje case that counties should not bother interfering with other countries even if they transgressed against human rights, but by that argument the United States shouldn’t have interfered with RSA and apartheid at that time. The USA put sanctions on RSA at the time which forced the apartheids goverment of the time ( the National party) to give up their power. How is that not intefering( telling other countties what to do in your words) then? And just to take things further by that same argument America shouldn’t have them intervened with Hitler/ nazi movement. When human rights violations are overlooked it easily leads to war. SA was on the edge of civil war for that very reason and the united states as well as other countries all agree to put economic sanctions on the country to force them into a position to relinquish control. So Mandela came into power thanks to that very same interference he doesn’t condone. It is hypocritical the guy i the audience is correct, so for Mandela/ Anc to state that they will support other countries that violates human rights, by accepting help and giving help to them in return is a “ you scrath my back, ill scrath yours” situation which is appalling and leave no space for moral standards. And hey alot of people argue you scratch my back i scrtach yours no matter the consequence but with human rights violations overlooked it often leads to severe travisties and even war. You are correct however by saying Mandela’s argument is simple. And I don’t mean that as a compliment.
@adelejonker6110
@adelejonker6110 Год назад
@Billy The Goat I don’t understand what the relevance of your first paragraph is other than racial issues exists everywhere? But racials issues and being discriminated against openly with law and order based on race, is not the same. That is a human rights violation which is not the same as mere racial issues which I think you are refering to and is merely prejudice. But be that as it may or if not. You made alot of assumptions about me. I never refered to you directly or attacked you, i just don’t agree with your opinion. But you made alot of assumtions about me regarding my viewpoint of England and the colonization of India ect. I don’t know how you arrived at your conclusions, other than the fact that i didnt mention anything on the matter regarding the UK. However the only reason i used the United states as an example and not the British as you say regardt interference was because of the crowd being adressed, which was held in the USA if im correct and thus relevant. And the last paragraph you wrote, acctually support my argument, that you cannot teach moral virtues if you show no morality yourself. And Mandela’s viewpoint in my opnion is not moral, but he is regarded as a hero in this regard. Everybody is surely intitled to their own viewpoints and political positions. I just wished his answer championed humanities virtues as a whole, something to admire instead of the regular whatever serves me and my interest only which is like most regular poeple’s viewpoint. And yes maybe higher moral viewpoints would not have served him in the practical sence in his situation, as the ANC was desperate. But that doesn’t make his viewpoint anymore admirable or deem him superior as a leader in my opinion. What i do admire was his commitment to his party’s struggle and their goals. The problewm i have with that viewpoint of Mandela is that itbis a self serving attitude which the ANC kept. To this day they are still in power, with a viewpoint of if you are not with them, you are against them and thus they are justified human injustices to their fellow country men. Just to share a practical implication of this type of thinking. If you work for goverment, and maybe decide to change from supporting the ANC to another party or do not support one of their decisions, you are very likely to lose your job or encounter severe resistance. Therefore Mandela may be a good leader to his country, bit I don’t think his overall viewpoints should be praised as some idealistic goals for other leaders to achieve, which sounds to me like the case when i read alot of the remarks made regarding this interview. How his praised for his higher thinking. I just don’t agree with it. Its just my take on it.

Nelson Mandela is a hero and a great humanitarian not only to the South African people but a gentleman who is advocating against racial injustices that plague the world. His position and work effects the entire world. As evil surrounds the 🌎 world. Evil is a malignant cancer and effects every household and every human being in the world. Injustice against one man is an injustice against the entire world. We need more men and women to rise up and be within the world their own Nelson Mandela. The horrors and injustices in South Africa be it apartheid or economic oppression is an evil. That must be confronted and condemned. The rulers of South Africa or Israel or the United States or in Russia or China or in Africa or in Afghanistan or in Pakistan or Europe or in Philippines or India or Canada or South America or in Mexico or in the Ukraine or in Venezuela or in Cuba or in any place in the World must be held accountable if the act as tyrants and as evil doers. Nelson Mandela is a bright jewel in this world against evil and We need to hold our own selves accountable to fight against evil wherever it is.Even if we risk or lose our lives for combating against the injustices of evil. If those of good will and of moral conscious don't fight against evil then we have betrayed ourselves and betrayed God.Nelson Mandela is a remarkable man.For he endured evil set against him and he endured the evil set against not only the South African people but the evil set against the whole of humanity. The Palestinian people and those of good conscience and of good will must confront the Israeli government who oppress them. The people of Afghanistan must rise up and fight against theTaliban and take back their country from those who oppress them and mankind around the world must rally to help them to overcome their oppressor. World peace maybe an a utopian vision but Mankind must not remain silent in not combating the evil that terrorizes the world.Food and Aid must be given to all those who are fighting against evil around the world.No country is Free if its people and people around the world don't join together to fight to be free from any evil that exploits and enslaves humanity. Nelson Mandela is a knight that seeks to overthrow evil and injustices in their home native country and around the world. Evil is rampant around the world yet it is not sustainable when a man or a woman or a people takes up the crusade to fight against it. In fact the evil in the world is easily beaten by a determined people who cast the light of truth and justice on it; and where there maybe need take up open revolt against it. I say fight the good fight against evil. Dare not let Nelson Mandela fight and life be in vain.Take up and sound the trumpet against evil and its companion ignorance. Wherever there be evil or human suffering or oppression upon a people or person or against humanity at large resist it. Shine the light of truth and justice on it. Be a Grace Tolbert be a Nelson Mandela, David Brookings, Fredrick Douglas, Gertrude Stein, be a people who fight against evil and against the dark principalities that maim and murder innocent people and that is the true enemy of humanity. We must never allow a holocaust or a genocide of people to be the norm. We must combat injustice and evil wherever it maybe quartered .

When you are a strong leader, the world recognizes you as a leader. Let the people of the world recognize you; No one hates you or despises you. Even if you have enemies, your wise leadership You calm down wisdom, but you also prevent misunderstandings, conflicts, struggles, and wars. The respect of the people of the world will not diminish because you do not care whether you are a leader or a leader (even after you step down). When you become a true leader, you will be honored and remembered even after you die. You do not want to destroy them because they are my enemies. A true leader does not resort to violence out of revenge; He shows mercy to those who are called enemies. He did not retaliate, even against his enemies, who had been torturing him for more than a quarter of a century. This is a true freedom fighter who is not greedy for power. Mandela, nicknamed Madiba, is the only South African to stay in power.
