glad I found this video today. Low life corrupt old man (tommy taylor) in mississippi told me he would come out and run diagnostic check on my power system after lights started blinking and going out for hours following a bad storm and power surge. Said he would just charge $75 for this (service fee) and I would have to pay for any part that needed ordered if I needed a part. He finally arrives and takes him 2 minutes to run his check and says "your converter is shot..I have one in the truck". He just happened to have one in an opened box. I had already taken all the screws out of the power unit so all he had to do was slide his converter in the slot and took 5 minutes to hook 5 wires. He looks at me and says "Ur all fixed up, that will be $370.00 plus $100 brings you to $470.00. I almost hit the roof! I said "sir you said $75 for your fee and whatever a part was and I told you let me know if its more than $150". He looks at me like I'm crazy and says "I can just yank it back out and leave". OMG!!! What a crook! Then, I google the part and find one on Ebay for $75 but a 2 week waiting period. I found another on Amazon for $170. I ordered it right there in front of him and asked him if he would install it for at NO CHARGE when it arrives? He said "yes and I can be over tomorrow or the next day (today) and put it in for you at no charge". I text him at 11:30 am and say "I'm here at the camper can you come install it"? He replies "for $37.50 I can but I'm putting in a water heater now". we went around and around for 4 hours with him saying "Dude, just put it back in yourself". OMG people SUCK. This man is on disability..pays NO TAXES and did not write me out a receipt = I will be contacting social security Monday and reporting him as well as the Better Business Bureau. He will regret trying to scam me and double the price of a converter. #Tommytaylor Thanks to THIS video, I was able to install the converter myself not knowing what in the hell I was doing as I am a singer/songwriter not an electrician .

I'm glad to hear my video was able to help you install your own converter :) that's all I ever like hear is people saving money by doing repairs themselves with the basic tools 😀 I've ran into my fair share of crooked and shadey people over the years and they are never good to deal with.

It sounds like to me that the guy wasn't trying to scam anybody but more like he was trying to profit off of material he already had. Why wouldn't you do that? Plus didn't you call the guy to come fix your electric? How is that scamming you when you called him? Smh. I can't stand cheap people that think others time is only worth pennies to them.

I was just thinking about replacing the converter for sister in law, thinking the same thing, cut and splice baby! Bing bang, done! Screw that tearing apart panel BS. P.S nothing wrong with using wire nuts, electricians do it every day.

How do you decide what voltage you want to set your converter to Also how come no one ever hooks a ground chassis that is beside the DC output lines. I could use your assistance with my install if possible. I have a couple of questions

On the converter box I used there was a screw on the side to set the voltage, just turn that screw left or right to increase or decrease the voltage output with a volt meter hooked up until your in the 14.2 to 14.7 volts range, as for grounding the converter box to chassis ground, you ABSOLUTELY can! I didn't, but that's because inside the converter I used the black ground terminal and the chassis ground terminal and tied into each other internally, and the 12 volt distribution panel box i wired it into already has a 4awg ground wire going straight to the chassis of the trailer, and that same output goes to the trailer battery to charge it which also has a 4awg ground running straight to the frame rails, and all the way up to the distribution panel, so in turn, the converter box is getting grounded to the chassis. But in cases where the distribution panel and or the battery and getting groundbto the frame its a great idea to attach the converter box terminal to the chassis than. I just didn't deem it Necessary in the application, as is the case with 97% Of most travel trailers and RVs

If I dont have a voltage meter, will the factory setting do fine??

I wouldn't trust it, and it's just a quick set from factory. I've seen them vary from 4 volts, to 21 volts. It's best to purchase a volt meter and most hardware stores and tool stores sell cheap ones (under $20) that'll get the job done

Is the blue wire a power wire?

Yes, 12 gauge blue wire is a power wire, that's what supplies the feed to the bus bar with the glass fuses in them, and the red wire is the output to the battery to charge it.
