PowerRAY ROV underwater video DRONE - NOT RECOMMENDED

EDIT - I have gotten several fairly negative feedbacks from owners of the PowerRay, frankly I must say I don't recommend this product at this time. Look for similar newer products on the market with better support like the Gladius.
Original description:
Unboxing the awesome PowerRAY underwater drone, the wizard kit with ZEISS VRone goggles for cool underwater FPV fun.
But not all fun, the PowerRAY from PowerVision is also a ticket to paying jobs, doing boat hull-inspections, port of entry clearance checks, pier inspections and even mapping water temperature and speeds in a current.
Unlike a lot of exciting ROV's we seen lately, this one is actually available for purchase today, call your local drone shop, or get it directly from PowerVision.me
Comment below with ideas for how we can use consumer ROV's commercially, and naturally for ideas what we can do with these for great fun.

I do wish there was a downward facing camera. Gimbal might be too tricky to waterproof but a second camera with split screen capability in the app to see forward and down would be a great feature for both exploring and search/rescue. Still a cool remote submersible, though.

Yes totally agree, I feel there is a bit of lost orientation / spacial awareness by the narrow FOV and no ability to look down. personally I kinda feel there could be even a 2 axis gimbal, roll-pitch that could take out the roll movement and pitch down as required with a bubble cover of sorts. But the amount of ROV functionality for the money is very hard to beat

I really enjoyed your video it was very informative. I am saving my pennies to get one of these. I have a home built ROV with three thrusters and I use Marcum and go pro tech for viewing . I also equipped it with a metal detector and several small magnets. I would like to see how the power ray performs in rivers and lakes searching for artifacts and coins. My ROV requires two people and this drone looks simple to operate. Great job looking forward to more,

You might want to take a look at the next generation of mini-ROV's as i find the lack of "roll" to slide sideways quite frustrating, also some of the newer not shipping yet are equipped with pitch for the camera. these are becoming very cool very quickly.

Dude, my dad got me this for christmas a couple years ago, it was amazing and we were so excited to try it out. Upon our first use i could not get the on board camera to show a live feed onto my phone, besides that, everything was just fine. Second try, same situation, but this time it had randomly shot out of control and started nailing itself to the soft bottom of the muddy pond. Now I have a perfect condition power ray with a vertical motor that doesn’t work

The vehicle itself looks very sexy and swoopy, love the design. Model boat clubs could use it to locate a model that has sunk and then recover it. Marina use could use it for hull inspection, but also pier piling inspection, illegal discharge from underwater pipes, items lost overboard, and so on.
@bophoto
@bophoto 6 лет назад
Ah did not even think about sunken RC boats, but then I have never really done much with RC boats.. pretty sure thats going to change big time ha ha. did not think about Pier-Piling. good call. Guess the hard thing with illegal pipes, is one gotta local them in the first place. but could easily imagine people scanning the banks for rivers to locate prolusion. There are interesting options here, PowerVision have a SDK mailable for these, and the sonar unit can also be used to take temperature samples. but its a open port system, so there are really no limit, you could add salinity sensor, or any other sensor to that bay that may fit a project.
@georgz3990

Thanks Bo, super interesting. My first thought was the to use it for the inspection of mooring buoy lines and chains or to check how well the anchor has dug in when anchoring on unknown grounds. Hull inspection is obvious. 70 m of tether in the water causes another worry to come up. And just in case the tether breaks loose (Murphy will strike anyhow!) - will the 1,400 $ ROV get lost or destroyed by salt water shortcutting the connectors?
@Sailing360
@Sailing360 2 года назад
Hey Georg, whie Im not a big fan of this particular product, I do like underwater drones. Generally speaking they are entirely sealed enviroments, there are not water-into the system, the plugs are waterproof, but you should naturally blow them dry with a can of compressed air or similar. the cord is intended to pull the drone out of the water if something stop working. That said - I have checked on mooring-balls with these, works perfect, just be aware its harder than one things to follow a line in muddy water LOL. the things you and I can do without thinking when jumping in the water, is far more complicated with a drone.

I wonder what use it would have in thick murky water. It would still be usable to measure depth and to find big items that have sunk on the bottom.
@bophoto

You can definitely make a scan of the bottom, it give you a linear scan, so after sailing say 50 yards you get a very good idea of what at that line. however the PowerDolphin is even better for that because its got the GPS to literally geotag the readings.

Yeah - its really a fascinating item. but once you toss it in the water things just kinda fall's apart. I struggle to understand why they did not just stick the camera they use on the EGG drone, on the nose of the PowerRAY in a dome of sorts to delivery the promised stable video every time you nudge the stick the video is all over the place.. and they already have all the components to make it awesome.. and why not a sideway thruster so drone pilots could fly this exactly as a regular drone.. thats the market. people who already get drones, and want to have fun underwater without worry about neighboor and flight restrictions. It also is NOT required to be registered as a watercraft either! I had issues with Vision+ app (used to download the images/videos) and Windows 10 64 bit (the app doesn't start or end properly) and using multiple WIFI / Ethernet connections. You must end all other ethernet and WIFI connections (just as you have to end cellular when using the PowerVision app). Additionally, you can hit the bottom and plug the motors with rocks, plants and other debris. BUT, the WORST thing is the lack of access to our data from an SDHC card which they claim is coming on the next release. If you can't see in the water ... neither can it. The water clarity is another issue that I come across.

Bo, one important question first. Are you saying when pictures are being taken, it ONLY saves the picture on onboard memory and does NOT send it back to the main transmitter to send it the phone live? If not, please suggest to PoweVision to allow the option to send the image back to base (as well as saving it to the main memory) since the cable is already attached. Live cam is a valuable feature. My second part, is a suggestion: Add a power line in the cable as well to send power to the drone from the base transmitter. Many boats provide power 12v or even 110V power outlet that can be connected to the main base that sends power to the drone for more powerful LED lights and motors once the extra power is detected. Please offer these feedback to PoweVision. There are MANY great under water applications, but this device will need the features I suggested. Can you tell us about the other two models?
@bophoto
@bophoto 6 лет назад
Hey Ben, you have live camera view at all times, when you take still or video it save on the SD card along with a TN in the app, to get the full shot you need to download the JPG's after the sail. (while powered, but you can power up when you get home or download before breaking down the setup) Like the idea for base power, but I suspect they have avoided it because power-cables are notorious for corrosion, I did a quick check on some of the others in the same bracket, thats about to come out the next half a year or so, seems they all are basing operation on onboard batteries. (some interchangeable but that seems to add another grand+ to the cost) PS Im sure Craig & Aaron are reading this thread, so anything posted is going straight to PowerVision.
@BenHayat
@BenHayat 6 лет назад
Thanks Bo! Q: The "LIVE" resolution that is coming to the app via cable, is it in the same resolution as the onboard camera capturing? Another words when you capture an image that gets stored on Drone's memory, and one you capture on your cell phone, are they the same resolution or is the cell phone version (transmitted) is lower resolution? Once you have a "Connected" wire to the drone, Battery should become a "Backup" source of power. You have batteries for flying drones, because you can't have wires, but in this case why not add another wire set in that white plastic housing just like the rest of the wires and give the drone more powerful motors and lights. Even small commercial under water drones have wired powered. If this gets added, PowerVision can jump into that market with 1/10 of the price. I'm working on such app that someone can use a Powervision type of drone as their tool for underwater project.
@BenHayat
@BenHayat 6 лет назад
I also checked, PV now has SDK for the products. Which means they're planning to keep these products and keep advancing them. Their GPS + Sonar system creates a powerful set of data to work with.
@bophoto
@bophoto 6 лет назад
the PowerDolphin is the ticket for Sonar-GPS, as its got a GPS, the PowerRay is analog, and dont have RTH, so you gotta drive it manually and you don't know exactly what your location is with the RAY. Probably not going to be sonar+GPS with the PowerEYE.

Regardless of which ROV you have; I build this tether reel for under $20 with parts from Home Depot. See www.flhelp.org/reel for a step by step instruction pictures. It makes reeling in easy. I have a Power Ray and I will say that it is "SLICK" in that sea debris will not snag on it, but can tangle on the tether. If you are "diving" as particular site from a boat -- anchor up current from your target and fly from the stern; that way you will not get entangled in the anchor line or props should you loose orientation or snag debris on the tether which will be behind you.

I would be interested by this drone for yatching, checking the anchor, and floor before grounding. (and possibly, enjoy a sub-water recon of the place) I noticed that the drone tend to get damaged by rocks when going near the ground, but it seems the drone can be weighted so it sink more easily, and mostly use the thruster to go up, rather than going down. It seems the weight are even included in the package. Such tests would be part of a real review.
