The Great Escape was the largest breakout from a German prisoner of war camp during the Second World War.
The event took place on 25 March 1944, 76 POWs of Stalag Luft III camp escaped captivity.
Almost all of those who were killed during 'The Great Escape' are buried in Poznan Old Garrison Cemetery, not far from where they had been held captive.
Alongside the Great Escapers, we commemorate more than 470 Commonwealth casualties of both world wars in Poznan, including prisoners of war from the First World War who were gathered here after the armistice.
The vast majority of those commemorated here are airmen who died while on bombing operations over Poland in the Second World War or who died while in captivity.

I'm sure their not going to care. They were caught as prisoners of war and didn't have rights after escape.

@@David-lo1fo What are you? a Nazi lover? It is the duty of all PoWs to attempt to escape and they have exactly the same rights while escaping as they had in the prison camp. This is very clearly stated in the Geneva Convention.

@@johnallen7807 Does the Geneva Convention say that's it a POWs duty To escape. I don't think the other Nations agreed to your claim. It wouldn't make any sense.

@@johnallen7807 If your an escaped POW , then escape in Civilian clothing, You my friend are considered a SPY. PUNISHABLE BY DEATH! AND YES i Admired the German army fir its bravery And fighting skills. However Hitler was a Insane Bigot and madman. Mad about Losing WW1 and the treaty of Verses which was a hard and bad deal for German economy. They would be paying Franch until 1984 in reparations. During The WORLD depression thus was not Going to happen. So we had another war , WW2.

Got to correct you, Although Roger Bushell was born in South Africa both of his parents were British and his youth was mostly spent in England as well.
