PPI Reveals $75K in REPAIRS for a FERRARI WORTH ONLY $80K

A PPI or Pre Purchase Inspection is a common recommendation when purchasing a supercar. But not all PPIs are equal. Many are very good, while some are absolutely terrible. And the cost can vary wildly. Make sure you know what you're buying before you pay!

Hi Jim! I have attached the inspection report for your vehicle. Here are the technician’s findings and recommendations: Convertible top is crooked, one side latches before the other. Once the headliner is replaced, we will run it a few times and see if the issue is still present. Annual service due. Not sure what the service history is, but we would recommend the following based on normal intervals Oil change + annual inspection: $1000.00 Drive belts: $450.00 Pollen + engine air filters: $480.00 Brake fluid flush: $460.00 Gearbox/differential + DCT fluid flush: $895.00 Power steering flush: $450.00 Spark plugs: $980.00 Washer spray nozzles misaligned (can be adjusted during annual inspection) High beam lights not working with headlight stalk. Recommend replacement $2950.00 parts/labor Engine and power steering oil both overfilled (can be addressed with oil change/power steering flush) RH secondary air pipe is crushed but still functional. I can provide a quote if you would like. TPMS warning light, sensors show 0 months life left. Recommend replacing set of 4 sensors $2400.00 parts/labor Vibration felt at idle, rattling from rear of the vehicle. Can diagnose further if you want. I will have my sales manager take a look at the vehicle as well and provide you with a rough estimate for value. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you! The best PPI i ever did? I was buying a vehicle 1,300km away (canada -eh!) in my uncle's home town who was (now deceased) a Master HD Mechanic. He went to the shop of the dealership and put it on their lift. 3 days later the dealer called me and was concerned about who was going to put the vehicle back together if i didn't buy it LOL. He tore off the oil pan, transmission pan, water pump, rear differential cover, the water pump and the accessories belts and pulleys hahaha. He even inspected all the markings and stickers on all the replaceable wear items to verify if they were OEM equivalent. I love him for it and its a story i always love to share. Needless to say, the vehicle passed inspection when i got it back to my home town with flying colours.

A company that runs track day experiences here in the UK had a F430 for several years. After 100k miles even it still didn't need new ceramic rotors. The ECU will log an estimated wear based on usage so that would have been useful for the new owner to know. Perhaps Josh just didn't mention it. As he says though, the best way to confirm wear is by weight, as they just shed carbon from the matrix rather than getting thinner like steel ones. I wonder if the dealer that did that PPI was really just trying to say DON'T BUY IT!

Amen bro, you said what all us DYI car guys already were thinking. PPI is just a way to make people feel better and then liberate large sums of money. If an honest mechanic is doing it, maybe it's worth it, but you never really know. I've seen people do such superficial inspections. Any real PPI would include a compression and leak down test. Honestly, the only thing I would pay for is the leak down. Everything else you do in a road test and scanning some codes.

Josh is the kind of 3rd party mechanic I like to find, he sounds like he is really knowledgeable and a straight shooter about what you really need to repair and what just isn't necessary to spend money on. I know a couple of BMW mechanics like that here in Atlanta, and I am looking at either an F430 or 458 in the next few years. Would Josh or anybody else on here have a recommendation for a Ferrari shop in the North Atlanta Suburbs? Ferrari Atlanta is in Alpharetta, so I'm sure there must be somebody near there...

Question for josh, what does it take to do a carbon fiber to steel conversion on breaking systems? Is it as simple as a pad and disc change or do you have to swop the caliper and go down the worm whole from there? (I think on Lambo mucies you have to swop the axel hubs and carriers over.

Theclassiccarnut you are indeed correct . I bought a California with very low mileage and it was maintained regularly by a Ferrari dealership. Upon buying, the used car dealership said they did a PPI and everything looked great. I kid you not, within 10 miles of driving the car, I got a gearbox failure message. Long story short. I took the car to Ferrari and it ended up having to have a 45,000 DCT replacement. The gods were smiling at me because they still had a month left on the manufacturer warranty and even with that, I was urged by Ferrari to extend it because due to Covid ,there was no guarantee that they were going to be able to have Italy approve the repair before the warranty expired. Never ever deal with these cars without a warranty and I have the money for an expensive repair.

Never have a PPI done by someone who is an acquaintance of the previous owner. They skip over things because they sometimes rely on what the previous owner has told them about the car and don't go deeply enough into certain areas. After taking ownership of my F355, I found 30 additional things to what the PPI inspector found, costing me $40,000 in repairs (and it was only that "cheap" because I did a lot of the repairs myself).

The were about 10 missing teeth from the gears, but no evidence of those teeth in the gearbox pan).

Even at $400 an hour excluding the soft top material and mechanisms I estimated based on 400 dollar per hour labor, almost 40 to 50 hours of labor for a top !!!!!

The revenue breakdown for new car dealerships relies very heavily on service sales. Usually, the margins on actual car sales is razor thin. As a result, dealer service costs have crossed the line into absurdity. Ferrari is clearly an ultimate example of that. Those prices took my breath away.

Lies! the clutch only has 6% life on it! And it'll cost 3.5 Million dollars to replace and it can only be done by the factory and it's a 600 hour labor job @ 1k/hr.

If you have a good tech, they are great! If not, they can be a total waste of money. It's hard to find good ones.

Yes, it had a coolant lead from a blown headgasket and the PPI I had done did NOT catch it. Thus my lack of confidence in PPIs.

So Dan is like, surely this PPI is crap but Josh is more like, well yeah, I’d probably replace some of these parts too. Reminds me to stick with Japanese or US cars.

That moron with the California is already at the finance company. So in his mind he's bought the car already. Even at half the price, the repairs are a huge amount of money given the value of the car. Your mechanic agreed with the necessity of most of the recommended repairs. As to the "aesthetic" items, isn't that why you buy a Ferrari? Do you want to be looking at a flickering display every mile you drive? You can't complain about a PPI because it finds too much; you complain about a PPI when it finds too little, and doesn't find the big things that are there. You can always decide not to do particular repairs. But what is shocking about a Ferrari is what those repairs cost. It's clearly just a rich man's toy. I'll just keep driving my MINI Cooper S which, in the real world, is just as fun and a lot less annoying to drive. And costs almost zero.

You obviously have never owned a Ferrari.... the cars are far from perfect even as they leave the showroom floor.
