Hell, tourists from NY & Philly don’t even know how to dress for a walk on flat land ,in the forest in South Jersey . We have very dense forest that people have entered & not come back out. Just don’t go off without a compass & a map if you don’t know where you are going, cell phones don’t work well in all locations especially around the military bases. No flip flops and shorts we have wicked thorn bushes and mosquitos are our state bird, bats ,ticks, leaches you name it we got it.

That view behind you. That is beautiful. I think in every profession, many after several years forget about what it's like when you're perhaps just breaking into the profession, or you're an outsider just looking to get a taste of it for a week, then you're really uninformed. I think communication solves a lot. We don't seem to want to take the time to stop and just Q&A on the phone or via videocall for 30 minutes with a group to resolve a lot of concerns, but that takes a lot of weight off someone. I'm full of doubts and concerns and questions, and I'm a mess if I feel unprepared or behind the curve. It's on us with the knowledge to communicate and get people squared away. It helps more than most realize, for them AND for you.

Thank you for the info! I'm a gardener with a flock of laying hens, compost piles and a couple dogs in Texas. I bought wide toe cowboy boots for comfort, stability and protection from red ants, thorns, brush, much and other bugs - not for riding. It confuses gardeners and cattle types, but for me it's call about function. I can clean off those boots in 30 seconds, but gardener shoes are always filthy with that mesh and suede on them. Let 'em not understand; I know why I need 'em. But the hat info is priceless! The humid heat here explains why many switch to straw hats in summer. Otherwise, the felt are definitely preferred.

That thin cheap slicker has saved me more times than I can count. I carry one every time I climb in the Saddle. I only carry the heavy outback style in colder winter. For anyone looking just be sure whatever jacket you would be wearing that these will fit over top. They offer dry but not much in warmth.

Never been a horseman but always loved the so called cowboy hat and boots. Quality full leather boots keep my feet dryer and the shape is the most comfortable I’ve found for walking and climbing ladders and for the hat without one my ears and neck burn something bad. The amount crap I catch for western ware I’ll take for the way it out functions all other clothing. And a duster with a rain fly is one of the best pieces of clothing I own, summer to winter it can be layered to fit the temperature to keep the wind and rain at bay. Nothing worse then leaning over to work on something and cold wet breeze blow up your back side.

Had a hat-induced blow up this past Saturday. We rode past a mountain lion kill and the horses were all on edge. Wind gust came up and blew my 9 yr olds cowboy hat off and it landed right at my horses feet. The very green mustang I was riding came unglued. This caused my 13 yr old sons mare to freak out too. We were both able to get them pulled around and settled down, but not without a few crow-hops and circles. My youngest son's hat is one of those universal fit with the elastic hat band, so it has a stampede string now.

I’ve found that the wranglers quality has gone down & they just don’t last me as long as they used to… I ride about 300 miles a week in east TN in the mountains. Been wearing the TSC ridge cut dungarees for about a year and they seem to hold up well.. the front pockets are really deep to so don’t worry about things working their way out on the trail… also no rivets on the pockets which seems to be where my wranglers wear through

Its funny cause i only recently realized that Wrangler jeans originated from Cowboys. I aint much of a cowboy at all, im born and raised in the city, but i just wear em for fashion. Honestly i think the straight fit simple straight fit blue jean look is way better than whatever else is fashionable atm. So perhaps you can be Practical and fashionable at the same time

As much as I love my cowboy hat, we ride as a family in helmets these days. Function over fashion in that case for sure but more western riders are getting comfortable with it, especially for certain activities. It does mean though that you need some sunscreen to make up for the lack of a good hat brim! ;)

I have worn 13 WD wrangler jeans for years. I find the wear point is on my right knee at an angle a couple inches over the knee. Never could figure it out other than it is on a stretch point due to my thigh size. I still love them. Buy them a two or three inches long so when you get on a horse their cuffs don't go the top of your boots. Horseman spec.

Nothing wrong with a leather stampede string on your hat. Especially if it saves you buying a round of drinks! And from my personal experience, a felt hat isn't really all that much hotter once you are used to it because if you keep the sun off your face, you're already going to feel cooler.

I did this even when i worked in an office - always higher quality buisness attire. I would rather pay MORE for clothes that last than junk clothing. I also have a "uniform" i wear daily. always black pants and black shoes OR hiking boots. Matches everything. Same when i was in an office. Black pants, black socks, black shoes, black belt, black suspenders. Any short matches, and any sport coat worked.
