When i was 10yrs old,I went to one music class where everyone was 20+age.I wasnt taught or cared by the teacher .Just I used to sing all swaras with the group with nil knowledge.....but you have helped me in learning basics mam...grateful forevee
Thanks Pratibha ji for your guidance it's very helpful. My mode of basic practice is that I do the sargam practice from the low to the high of every scale, which I am comfortable with. Everyday for half an hour is all tat I do. Keep up the good work it will be helping many.
I really appreciate this video focusing on the elements to pay attention to while practicing. I think I am on the right track. I am learning to sing “Katril Enthan Geetham” by Janaki amma. It is an extraordinary composition by the Maestro, I think. I have taken it upon myself as a challenge. Your video on singing the beginning swaras has been a great help. Until then, I had been managing to pull it off in my own way. However, although it sounded fine to me, the smooth flow in her voice was lacking in my version. I am almost there to record my voice with a karaoke backtrack. Your video helped me to make the necessary corrections. As a male in my 60s without any classical training, your teaching videos have been a great gift. I have also been doing some of the songs with simple piano chords as backing. Your teaching technique is superb! Thank you!

I too learn singing..but I struggle in high notes...but my teacher forces me to to sing the high notes through throat...And when I sing it through my throat..My throat pains...But I don't say anything to my teacher..cause she has an experience of 10 years teaching...
How do we know, the students, that we're taught wrong or right? There are times when teachers get offended if you say i saw this on RU-vid or there are other gurus that said xyz..... So how do we navigate this problem?
Even great saints like Ramanuja changed guru.. nothing wrong.. no need to offend anyone.. if you cannot change your guru.. sing the way they like.. but practice the way you like at home.. end of the day there is nothing right or wrong.. everyone has their own style.. if you like your singing that is enough.. singing should be for self actualization.. self realization... self fulfillment...
Loyalty towards a guru is a great virtue, but not if it is harming you personally. Any singing style which causes pain to throat is absolutely wrong in my opinion and will eventually lead to vocal damage. Please try to explain your concerns to your Guru and if you still don’t get a guidance for good technique, there is nothing wrong in stopping this journey and looking for a new Guru, preferably with someone who understands encourages healthy vocal technique. Understanding and empathy of a teacher is more important than years of experience.
That’s a tricky question! As a student it is very difficult to find out if you are learning from a good source since our ears are not developed to know this. At voxguru i do the job of screening teachers and ensuring only the best ones teach on our platform. But without this kind of screening done by professionals, it’s very difficult for a student to know the difference. It is better to learn from a reliable brand who is doing this homework for you. Or if you are learning from an individual teacher then ensure he or she is endorsed by a professional musician whom you trust.

Gamakas are usually learnt as part of compositions like varnams, Krithi’s etc in various ragas. But if you want a general introduction to gamakas and some flexibility exercises there is a course on gamakas available on the voxguru app.
Head voice is not used in indian classical music, but then how can I hit the higher notes? My voice gets tired and throat pains while singing the higher notes... Kindly guide me what should I do?? Also please tell me how can I make my headvoice stronger...
Head voice is very much used and necessary in Indian classical music also. I use the head voice actively even while singing Carnatic music. But you need good guidance and understanding of how to appropriately use it so that it doesn’t affect the authenticity of the style.

I would somewhat disagree. 1. There is no perfect. There is perfect execution against some standard which is impossible to achieve. 2. All practice is better than no practice. 3. The goal of anyone should be to understand how to learn better(which is what you ultimately are talking about) and that requires making mistakes and such. No one starting out has a clue(we are all born dumb). So over ones journey one learns. The journey is what is important. It is what gives meaning to the end. Being a master without any of the process is meaningless. E.g., if one could just do X perfectly without any effort makes X meaningless(although people will worship you if you could do anything with no effort it is because they too want to skip the process... but they can't and neither can you). The point being is that "practice makes perfect" really means "perfect your practice and practice as much as you can". It is better to say that most people give up too soon(we have all been there) because these things are not easy but generally we are told or given the impression that it is. Kids generally do not understand the sheer amount of work put in by those that are good. Most kids tend to have an inflated sense of ability because they lack a huge understanding of everything. Adults tend to have an underinflated sense of ability because "I suck". But all it takes is practice. Yes, there are better ways to practice and one must learn to do them. That takes time. There is no free trip. It's built in to the universe. Your ability is in direct proportion to your *real* practice. Practicing by pretending to practice is not practice. Focusing on the end game without completing the middle game is almost pointless and counter to reaching the end. If you want to master something you must expect to make it your life. That is what masters are, just people who have spend their lives doing the thing they are masters of. Anyone can master anything but you only have one life. What do you want to master? [Also our social and financial systems screw up everything since they generally are warped to benefit only a few who generally are dumb, selfish, and criminal. But regardless of where a person is in existence all they can do is choose to do what they spend their free time on. If they waste it then they do not value themselves yet and will suffer for it.]
