Great advice that I've heard and taken from many teachers over the years. Practicing wrong = playing = wrong. Practicing right = playing right. Very sound advice !! And play and practice in front of all of your friends and family until they're entirely bored with you. It's the only way that I've found to get over those pesky stage fright nerves. Play in front of anyone who asks you to and do it all the time.

Excellent. My teacher many years ago said to practice a piece by playing it as slowly as possible. He meant very very slowly, so it feels slower than possible. This gives the fingers and brain a chance to link together. I don’t follow this advice all the time, but when learning a new piece or working on something quite tricky, going slower than seems possible is a very good way of making progress (which seems counter-intuitive). My teacher was John Cadman.

Yes, your advice is very valuable for everyone to slow down for practice and warm up. Speed up gradually once everything is fine rhythm , correct notes, musicality, etc.

EXCELLENT ADVICE GOHAR...It does make sense to break a piece down and isolate the trouble spots to perfect them. So when you play the music all together, everything connects with no mistakes... and things flow like they're supposed to. By the way I watched your video on tremolo. And although you're a lovely lady to begin with, when I watched your video on playing difficult passages, you look so much more beautiful!!! Keep up the good work... And thanks for the musical inspiration.

This was one of the most valuable practice techniques I've learned playing guitar. Gohar is only the second guitarist I've heard talk about it. Another valuable practice technique I've learned is the concept of playing each piece slowly.

This (her ideas here) seems to be the best kept secret on the internet. It is not fun, it is tedious, it is frustrating, but it produces results! It apears impossible to sell these ideas because it takes a lot of effort. Behind every accomplished player I've ever heard is 10,000 hours or more.

this will be a challenge for me. When I get to the fifth and last one, I'll get a mild panic attack thinking, "c'mon don't screw it up or you'll have to start all over again!". This is a mental challenge for me.

Also for me. This is one of my biggest problems also in playing pieces. I'm scared when the difficult passage is coming like "do it good, do it good"... but most of the times I fail. Anyway, thanks for the lesson, Gohar!

The basis of any skill is the clear visualisation of where I am (where my fingers are at the moment) and where I want each finger to go next and in music it is combined with internally hearing every note, not just the melody, but also every little side note and simultaneously envision the greater context. Like when you read a text. You see every single letter, understand how it sounds in the group that makes up a word and understand that word in the context of the sentence (and preferably the whole text). If you do this in music, you will be able soon to improvise, to compose, to be creative and above all, relish the music in such a deep way that you will forget about the audience, the performance - but be just compleately absorbed. You are on the right way.

Heitor Villa-Lobos: Etude No. 1 (this passage is somewhere over the middle) He wrote 12 of them, and though they are obviously technical studies, they also remain standard concert repertoire since they were introduced by Segovia

I am confused... In Etude 1 there are only arpeggios but from one part which has slurs. Thats the part she is playing. Surely you can just play through the piece and find this?

Yes, it DOES work for everyone. If you have issues with your attention span, that is a different topic altogether. A person is either willing to put in the time to get it right, or they are not.

You have to sell the idea to your students, I suppose. With younger students you can turn it into a game. Something like: repeat this section 5 times, but if you make a mistake you have to start over. Or show how you would use a metronome yourself also works. Just telling them: practice with a metronome doesn't work with most students.

why do I feel that you were playing faster than 176 (@5:10) ... your speed was something like 200-210 :/ PS: I am new to using the metronome.... I tried to play it at 176 with 1/4 note but it is really slower than what you've played...am I missing something?

easy to figure it out, but it would have been best if you could instruct a little bit on the fingers used for the right hand as well. i assume it as P-MIMI....P
