Hi Gorhan. I am so glad and also a litte bit proud that you made this Video because I was probably one of those who inspired you to produce a Video on right hand thumb. I have tried many different thumb positions and nail lengths to master the Problem especially with right hand rest stroke. I have never been really happy with the result. I searched many times through RU-vid but you will hardly find a satisfying help on this topic. Your Video is so helpful and in fact it seems so Logical the way you explain it, at least when you have the requirements relating to the thumb and nail structure. Thank you so much.
Glad you made the comment about nail length - I think the length some players are growing their nails is silly - they lose the balance of 'flesh plus nail' and sound like they're wearing finger picks like a Dobro player. Plus it has to be a hassle to maintain. I was taught a cpl mm past the finger tip is enough and gives you much more tonal flexibility.
Very informative and precise video, thank you Gohar! PS: I found it difficult to hear your voice from the PC speakers and I had to put headphones. Maybe putting the microphone closer or amplifying the voice in post-production could be helpful to hear properly.
I'm confused about how you can play downwards, towards the soundboard during a free stroke. Pumping Nylon has the same advice. It seems like if I truly stroke downwards, I can't avoid muting the next string. I have to be playing stroke pretty much sideways if I want my thumb to clear the next string. But excellent video and thank you for making it!

Where does the right-hand thumb go when playing scales? I see some people keep it on the sixth string; other players keep it 2 strings behind the other fingers, but for me, what seems most natural is to just let it float without constantly touching any strings.
Hi Gohar, I like to let you know that your videos are among the most informative, no-nonsense teaching tools on guitar education. Thanks for your sharing. I started learning to play guitar two months ago by watching videos like yours, and I like to ask you one question about the right thumb. Do you only use the fresh of the left side of the right thumb, or do you touch the string with the right thumb nail? In my case, I only use the left side of the fresh to touch the string, and I am concern if this is wrong.
Sorry for the late reply, I don't actually get notifications for these comments as this is not my own channel. I use both nail and flesh. Only flesh gets a very muted sound. The nails make it cleared and louder.
My advice is for people to take what Gohar is saying with a large - a very large- pinch of salt! There have been so many fantastic players whose technique break all of these "rules" that she mentions. To mention but a few: Segovia, Williams, Thibaut Garcia, Paco de Lucia, Jason Vieau, Julian Bream, Ida Presti... the list goes on and on but I'll stop there. So, I would really urge people to consider two things: 1)Find your own way of playing, study the masters closely, see what works for you and experiment. The only guides really are: your ears (listening carefully to the sounds you are making, recording yourself), being attentive to how relaxed or tense your whole body is, and how relaxed your fingers are when you are playing very softly or loudly. No it's not true at all that all strokes should come from the knuckles! That's a silly myth. Some strokes come from there, others come from the middle and lower joints, and some using the weight of the whole arm. Sometimes the thumb plays upwards, like when it plays rasgueados, check also thumb playing flamenco techniques. One of the most beautiful magical singing tone comes from playing upwards not downwards (check out the Segovia sound) Aim for economy of movement, a nice fluid circular movement. (Our body is built in circles and spirals). If you are fluid the more you relax the faster you'll be able to play. 2)You will find that as the years pass and your body and experience grows and as you play more difficult repertoire your posture and hand positions will change often! So be adaptable and open minded. Finally, remember that all playing technique starts in your mind, heart and body. How and from where you respond to the music. This is NOT something mechanical but conscious and awake. Also I would urge people to choose a player that they admire and go have a few masterclasses with them if they can.
I have a lot of respect to Gohar and other professional talented guitarists that take the time and care to teach for free on u tube. It takes a lot of time, effort and training to gain their capabilities and they share their experiences. Together with that I think you're absolutely right. It's important to be exposed to different approaches, understand the critical principles of classical guitar playing and choose what works best fot you.
