A certain Meve Stiller wrote this song 'Fly Like A Seagull'. And this seagull once heard a song of the brickish band Jazzrow Dull titled 'We Used To Grow'. And the seagull thought by itself 'what a fine chord progression. Let's transpose it and change the melody.' Voila, Caladonia Motel by the Seagulls...

The easiest way to learn all the notes on the fretboard is to memorize the notes where the dots are at frets 3, 5, 7 & 9, but just five strings because the two E strings are repeats. That's only 20 notes. You already know the notes at the nut and the 12th fret (where it starts all over). With a little concentration, your brain will automatically fill in all the other 'unknown' notes because you'll be only one fret away from a note you already know. You can memorize the entire fretboard in less than a week this way. Really.

I appreciate you, and I’m so grateful for your channel!

I began recording with a lot of hybrid picking to create that space. My friends and other writers always give me the ‘You have a lot of space, while also constantly layering and building up the song…’ What they’re hearing is a constant outlining of chords and their flavors tied together in the mix. Single note spread arpeggios over basic chords can completely change your second verse. To me…it’s fun! Yes it takes work, but more I’ve done it, the more natural it is.

When some one says, "Do I really need to know [music theory]?", the answer is invariably YES! It may seem like it's a waste of time, but it's not and never will be. The brain is a muscle; use it or lose it. It may seem like some disparate piece of trivia, but is only a lack of corrolation on your part. The more you learn and know the more you see connections. Connections build memories and a deeper appreciation for the world around us. Anything less is taking Life for granted. So, do you need to know that thing? Always 'yes'. Don't hide behind excuses.

I’ve long thought that the electric guitar takes the same role as the classical pipe organ. Music theory is key to the basis of understanding how music works. I studied George Bizet’s Symphony in C because our orchestra was performing it and I was tasked with writing the description for the program.

How about Big Brother and the Holding Company's Summertime sung by Janis Joplin? The intro is a (Bach?) fugue played played by guitarists James Gurley and Peter Albin, and this is carried through the entire arrangement. It really works to support and complement Janis's vocals, the two musical types somehow both fitting in and contrasting.

Good call. Also, blackbird by the beatles, Paul McCartney has said that he was messing around with a kinda Bach style piece on guitar when he came up with blackbird. Also, tubular bells is almost the same as one of bachs pieces, some fugue something or other, I believe.

Knowing music theory in order to be a better musician is like thoroughly knowing a language to be a better poet or writer, knowing the perfect words to convey your message, mood, emotion and how they interplay. This is way better than football except for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I'm from Atlanta. Surprised we haven't met yet . My last concert I went to at the Masquerade was Love and Rockets . Funny I'm just now discovering the importance of arpeggios in relation to melody writing. Its almost as if the arpeggio helps guide you down a unseeable path to a possible melody or song . I play street music sometimes down at Piedmont Park on the belt line just up from tenth and Monroe under the bridge. Funny your headed to Berlin. I just got back from living in Duesseldorf for the last 20 years. The German people are great and they love music .I like the arpeggio ideas at the beginning of the video and I think I'm gonna use that . How about that Ted Greene chord chemistry book pretty intense . I'm thinking about getting your book . Must have been cool to talk to Sting . Saw the Police at the Omni and Sting 1 time at the Fox theater.Keep on Rockin

No, it doesn't come as easy to some of us common players as it does to you so we get frustrated and play totally by ear. 😆 But, it's close, not accurate. It's like everything else in life...do the work to reap the reward. I suck at theory but continue to learn from you continuously.

Rick, I'm sure we are all doing the best we can. I've been a hard study of Jazz the last six years. I've learned an extraordinary number of new chords. Yet I still feel as if I only know less than half of them, and that's in standard tuning. I probably would know more if I hadn't got caught up in creating designer chords for my own compositions. I just recently bought a real computer. I was using only the tablet since Windows XP is not supported anymore. I wish I could afford your book, but I can't. But that's OK since I'm intelligent enough to figure it all out myself.

Sometimes, all it takes is knowing how something sounds in your head before you figure out how to articulate it. How do you think all of the great classical musicians wrote their stuff? There's a lot of soul in music. Feelings. The best music comes when the soul can connect with the feelings. You listen to different tones and recognise how each tone makes you feel. Then you just connect them together. Anyone can be a guitarist, but not everyone can be a musician.
